For those who feel bad about the contestant who said "school," it should be noted that he was invited back to the show soon afterwards and won a 6-4 tiebreaker.
WHAT! school, school, and school didn't match SCHOOL??? Yet college, college, and another school matched SCHOOL???!!! and then... party girl matched lady of the evening???? That poor guy was soooo cheated.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of this famous or infamous Match Game '77 school riot episode. While the original run of these week of shows didn't happen for another month or so, GSN is currently showing them this week. And tomorrow, Thursday, March 30, is the day that they will air that classic episode. They show back to back episodes, so it will be the first episode. I often wonder about the contestant Craig who gave the answer "school". (not sure about his last name, if anyone knows what it is please let me know.) Like is he still alive? My gosh, he would have to be at least in his 70's by now. I mean what a legacy to have, on being on one of the most talked about episodes of Match Game ever, or any game show in general. I would love to know how often it has come up in conversation with his family, friends, his coworkers. Or even complete strangers. What a startup conversation. It would have been cool to see him come here on TH-cam, talking about that experience, what his life had been like since.
After seeing this, I can understand Richard Dawson’s attitude when he wanted to leave. This was just ridiculous. You write the word “school” and they do not count it as a match????
Amen. The "Star Wheel" also was ludicrous. Dawson was on fire with great ratings over on ABC and in syndication with "Family Feud" in 1977, so some were jealous of his success.
The judge clearly has an ego. He doesn’t count night school as school. Then gives “party girl” for “lady of the night”..... this was truly messed up. One of the worst things I have seen on a game show.
One of the biggest ripoffs in game show history! And note at 19:11 how subdued the audience is when the lady wins the game -- not the usual long applause.
This was so not fair to the guy. As said, if they allowed "college" and "scuba diving school," all answers containing the word "school" should have been allowed. I think they should have had the judge explain his ruling. The guy got cheated, and they definitely should have asked him back, or maybe they did and he refused.
Those celebs where a riot...this was the epitome of 70s game shows. It was so fun to watch. This and Hollywood Squares just pushed it to the edge perfectly.
He should of got all 6 matches, they were all the same meanings for school. He gave the general answer of school, yes the panelists got too specific but they were all school
It was a bit hilarious to see my Mom's 2 favorite game show hosts (Gene Rayburn & Richard Dawson) have the argument they did in this episode... & then I thought how weird, yet hilarious, it would have been to see my 2 favorite game show hosts (Peter Tomarken & Regis Philbin) have a similar argument...
wow! 100% BS! that guy WON! its freakin' match game NOT jeopardy! SKOOL = SKOOL = SKOOL ALL DAY & NIGHT LONG! yep did it that way to prove the point that even an idiot knows that school = school whether its the beginning/end, day/night, general/specific, private/public...SKOOL = SKOOL! so why was it they declined it as a match? good for Debra & Richard for not giving up, not sure why Patti did not CHIME in w/ them, what was she afraid of? obviously the others were also upset, showing their support w/ the school riot skit, I love that they ALL kept their "school" answer cards in their slots! BRAVO! not only were these ? judges? 100% WRONG but it was also a HUGE slap in Richards face because he has been a long standing HIGHLY RESPECTED game show guy/host so he defiantly has some clout! wow that was just shitty all the way around...
I like it when Richard stands up for the contestants! He understood how important the match was to the contestants. RIP Richard Dawson! 1932-2012

I agree 100%!
With 6 "schools" to 5 "lady of the evenings" and 1 Massage therapist, technically the guy won and should have went on to the Super Match! =P
I think at the very LEAST they better have brought him back, because that was one of the most unfair of rulings I've ever seen on this show!
they did

Detloff. He was my 11th grade biology teacher at Glendale High School (L.A.).
Very Interesting My Good Friend 🤓
Very Interesting 🤔🤔!!!

one of the best episodes ever
The Match Game judges are really crooked
Notice the way Richard points out his answer... 14:10
Hahaha I just noticed that, good eye mg
"Hookette": I love how Patti flavors her answers.
i would love to know if there were any meetings among cbs execs about this. inconsistent judging prevented that guy from winning fairly

That dude got ganked.

They did ask him back, and he came back and won one game in his return appearance.

I understand what you're saying, but the argument was really between Richard, and Ira.
0:10 That _"Looking for a riot"_ face.
16:36 "Now... CHARLES?!?"
Did he get to come back? That judging cost him a tie. At the very least, he should have been given a second go.
With Richard giving Masseuse I'm not sure there would have been a tie. Judges would have buzzed the answer just to mess with him.
TeamPaul17 How tall is Charles.
.?
He did, and won an episode! Won 6-4 in a tiebreak, I'm watching the episode right now on Game Show Network, January 1st, 2019.
"Fireplace" didn't make the top three? Wow.
how fun!
They did that because it was Richard... He was kind to Charles.
They took Deborah's off before Richard gave his answer, so I'm not so sure.

Game Show Videos This will be known as the Match Game School Screwjob
Richard Dawson started that riot!
The very end of this episode is missing, so it's not really "complete."
🖕 Dawson let's them know how he really feels about it, did you catch that?
College is another word for school
Can you upload the Karen Lesko(?) episode?
Peyton place?
Old time soap opera. It was the forerunner to Dallas and Dynasty.
Oh ok. It's easy not to think in the 70s when you're watching in 2016. Haha.
Well known soap opera of the time.
