  • It’s all over now: their love affair, their reign, the future they once imagined for themselves. Defeat has come for the Roman general Mark Antony and his lover, the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Now, it’s death’s turn.
Having stabbed himself, Antony passes away in Cleopatra’s arms - and Cleopatra is now alone in the world, facing a cruel fate as trophy for her enemies. She will not go quietly.
As she prepares to make her final stand, Cleopatra pauses to remember the man she loved so - and the dreams they had of ruling the world together.
“I dreamt there was an emperor Antony,” she explains. “O, that I might know another sleep and in it, meet with such a man.”
In her fantasy, she imagines Antony being larger than life, a celestial being whose legs straddle the ocean and whose raised arms crested the world.
“His face was as the heavens,” she sings mournfully, describing her vision. “A sun and moon kept their course in his eyes and lighted this little orb, the earth.”
The heavens call to her. And Cleopatra will answer. Witness soprano Amina Edris in the heartbreaking finale of John Adams’s “Antony and Cleopatra,” based on the immortal play by William Shakespeare: sfopera.com/cleopatra #CleopatraSF
