I also have to agree with the teacher that using the first finger on your left hand to PUSH the flute mouth plate FIRMLY into and onto the ridge the chin and the jaw, some call it the 'shelf' and that your RIGHT hand is not 'so much' holding UP the flute but is just counter pushing away from your face so that the effect is the SHELF, or chin joint has the mouthpiece turned slightly out (for me) and the edge of the lower plate has a good grip on your 'shelf'. Your left hand has the 1 finger hooked over the flute putting the pressure of the MOUTHPIECE into and onto your shelf, that is what keeps your flute attached to your face, not the thumb of your left hand, that is used to operate the bB thumb key and finally your RIGHT hand THUMB that pushes the flute away from your face, giving a very secure, yet freedom for your fingers to move without putting too much stress on your thumbs for certain 'difficult' finger positions, especially in the upper range of the scale.
I would say, because the pinky is the smallest and the weakest finger, for most of us, that you make sure the foot joint is adjusted so that you can reach all the keys and that ALL the keys on the foot joint are CLOSED when trying to play low B and that your other fingers are NOT TOUCHING the TRILL keys as your pinky reaches for the low notes on the foot joint. Also make sure that the low keys on the foot joint are being SEALED by the pads, even the smallest leak will cause large problems.
Yes! It is a challenge but at least you know where your limit is! Small tip: just make sure it isn’t something wrong with your flute. Sometimes a small leak causes trouble with the low notes!
Hi! I found your channel a couple of days ago and it has already helped me to learn a lot more about how to get clear tone and other stuff. I struggle a lot when I have to go for example from low g to low d. The tone gets fuzzy and can't get it clear.
Hey there! I did a video on low notes that may help? I also have another video on its way that may help too! But it does take some time and patience ☺️
How much difference might a new head joint make on my 100 year-old Haynes? I struggle with my sound constantly, especially in the middle register but also in the low? I feel like it should be easier for me. Thank you 🙏. Michael
This is an older comment, but if you still need advice, it might be more likely to need an adjustment than a new headjoint. Unless there is a problem with the cork, in which case they can typically just replace the cork
Hello, I'm a flute player, and I've been watching your channel concerning flute of course, I just can't see in the internet the low Bb, is there any? And also what to push or tips how to put my finger on the lower B. Thank you. :,)
The low B roller does not fully close the C and C# holes. You need to hold all three keys down with your pinky. (This assumes, of course, that you have a Low B footjoint rather than a Low C footjoint). Some flautists use this linkage convention to play a 4th-octave C₇ using the B roller instead of the gizmo. I have never seen a B♭ foot joint. There are some songs that would benefit from a low B♭ key that don't need a low B. So I had a local flute repair person make me a B♭ extension for my flute. It is used in addition to my B footjoint (much like a Foster Extension would be added). When my B♭ extension is in place, fingering Low B plays B♭ instead. Does it work? Somewhat. It is difficult for me to get a consistent, clear Low Bb with it. _(P.S. He is a nice guy. He only charged me $20)._ Alternatively, you can bend your B a little lower with embouchure adjustment.
But, what's happening at that breaking point? It's always right about low F for me and it's weird! I'm playing pretty well up and down, and then my 'chops' just flurb (yes, flurb! ;-) right out from under me.
I have a question to ask, my low register isn’t working anymore?? Like it used to play perfectly on my flute in the past but recently it isn’t working. I think it is because of bumping something out of place but I just got it fixed a couple of days ago and it’s still not working. I practice all the time on my low Cs and do exercises daily and even play it constantly in pieces. I don’t know what’s happening, does anyone know what it could be? Should I take it into some other people and risk wasting the money?
It’s very funny, from reading comments I learned that different people had a different breaking point. Somehow i just thought it was the same for everyone! Silly.
Oh wow, that really helped! Thank you, I’ve been struggling with this for a long time!
wow this changed my register instantly!!

Joe Magnets totally totally yes! You could not say it better. So many think you need to rest the flute on the LH thumb 🤦🏻♀️
Another great exercise, thank you! I’m adding this one to my practice routine for sure. Love your videos!

Nearly immediate improvement. Thanks! Maith agat!
I discovered my breaking point was at G yesterday, I spent soooo long just trying to get it to sound half decent...ugh flute is hard
that's why it's so fun it's like a challenging game of target practice.

Gold nuggets of info. Thank you so so much.
Thanks for these intersting tips!!!
