I did back when I traveled more, but idk if I still do, my only advice is that if weight doesn't matter the wheels are nice, but if you have weight limits the wheels add quite a bit of weight.
Hi amazing video. Based on your recommendations I just bought the maverick 88 ti and they just arrived can't wait to try them. Got them for 450 incl binding, made a very good deal. Thanks for the content mate.
This content is a gift to the internet! Keep shining the light on every aspect of the ski industry, from the world of influencers hawking fast fashion to the snow compaction programs at steep ski areas where "bootpackers" are utilized for days at a time in the early season, sidestepping entire ski runs to promote cohesion among layers and mitigate avalanche hazards--with little or no public awareness of their activity. #snowcompaction
I'm more spread out in ski widths. Volkl Racetiger SL 68mm, Salomon QST 92 and line SFB 108mm. Smiths Helmet, Head 1:41 Raptor 120 ski boot with Zipfit Corsa liners, Komperdell D'scent carbon poles and trying out HH outer gear for the first time this season. Stocking with my Oakley Flight Deck and Fall line.
Rad Setup! I miss my old Racetigers. I had a Helly Hansen Shell years ago that I really loved. Could take GS gates without ripping and withstood the burn marks.
If you want to take your socks to the next level. Get a merino wool compression sock. They promote circulation and reduce fatigue. Just make sure you get the right size. Sizing is based on the size of your calf I believe. They Are a little bit more expensive, But I think it's one of those items that's worth the extra ten or twenty dollars.
When I worked at the Ligety-Weibrecht camp, Andrew gave me the same advice. He just had the tight Smartwool in Black. I was like "don't you use the special race socks?" He was like nah there too thick, the race boots are so tight some guys don't even wear socks.
Hey Elliot ,, Thanks for all the reviews, recommendations and thoughts , I am local So Cal , From way back I've skied Atomic Red Sleds Team Bionics 205cm, and K2, 205 cm K2 TNC COMP days , Im older now at 60 but still ski the 2018 K2 Supercharger, GS style has been my background , carving at speed , I've skied Hood , Mammoth , NorthStar, Squaw , Sugar bowl, Boreal Ridge , Alpine Meadows, and everything in So Cal. I plan on skiing Utah this year 5 days Deer Valley or Alta or both , 15 days in Mammoth and So Cal local stuff . So I am looking for a recommendation for a pair of skis that I can break out of the GS mode , More just to cruise trail jump off piste and still have , UGGGGGH the best of both worlds .., I know that doesn't really exist but im not just looking for a powder ski. Im 5'9 , 250lbs solid build, I ski and turn with power and some weight on ski , So Im considering Mindbender 89 TI , Atomic Mav 88, and the QST 98 ,,, Id like a quicker , lighter and still feel playful, free to really go all mountain . As well my K2 Superchargers are 182 cm length , love em . What length are we talking about Here with an all mountain ski ? What would you say ? Thank s Bill
Hey Bill, I actually think the Fischer Ranger 90 might be a great fit for you, I made a video on the Ranger Series Today actually! : th-cam.com/video/kM_rhdop3xQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OuR0Dgcjlme0c_S0 Definitely worth at least considering. I personally went with the Maverick 88ti and love it, but also think the Mindbenders would be better for getting through some of that Sierra cement. Here's my video on the mavericks: th-cam.com/video/JjtSLtniAbA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=24AhVpMBvBRZw0SA and the Mindbender: th-cam.com/video/85dRP7FtgWA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S4QXB9k5e8H6bmKh You can pick size based on your taste, but I would probably go 172 if it were me. Cheers and thanks for watching.
I use the Smith I/O Mag with interchangeable lenses. I like having the ability to switch them depending on the conditions for the day, or change mid day on the mountain conditions change without a hike to the truck
Hi Elliott, I enjoy watching your videos, with the socks my go to are the LeBent range. I'm an Aussie and do most of my skiing here in Australia, you may of heard of it.My current ski is 2016 Volkl Kendo, I am thinking of investing in the new Kendo 88 or the QST 92 which I have used before and really enjoyed them off piste. Ski gear is mainly Aussie surf company snow wear mainly Quicksilver or Rip Curl which works well over here and in Japan.
Yeah definitely check out the Qst's, have not skied the Kendos, but I have skied the Mantras and the QST's are VERY different! either way very cool to just try.
@RicketySkiReviews I have tried the Mantras as well and really liked them,I feel very comfortable on both Volkls but I enjoyed the Qsts also. The only off putting thing about the QSTs was they tended to chatter on the almost icy hardback that we had to endure until the day got warmer. Thank you for your reply, I also like the Ski Essential reviews, have been watching them for the last few years now.
I like your no bullshit honest opinion. Its refreshing. You clearly like your Atomic skis, me too. I have 2015 Nomad Blackeye TI. They've been excellent but I'm going to demo the Q series. I only stay frontside these days and looking to go lighter and narrower. Are you planning to test anything from the Atomic Q series at all ?
Yes! In fact I had a pair of the 2024's in my hand at Mt. Hood! But the lift was shut down, and I had to hike up with the skis, so I opted for the Mavericks instead of the Q 9.8's just because the Mavericks were so much lighter. But I do want to try them next chance I get.
I'll look forward to it. I'm older, lighter and shorter than yourself, so I'm looking at the Q series or Maverick. I'm in Australia so have to wait until next year for a demo.
You should try goggles with photochromic lenses. I use Julbo Cyrius which have 1-3 range and they're great no need to change goggles if conditions change or if the light gets flatter at the end of the day or even in the trees. I have one's with a 2-4 range that you can lift the lens from the frame when it gets hot or you're sweating when skinning.
I think they work well in most conditions. I find they don't perform that well in flat light. Which is about forty percent of my days on the mountain on the east coast😂
Elliott-- can't see if you already have those Mavericks mounted but curious... if you were offered a pair of 2017 Look SPX 12 dual pivot WTR's in yellow/black which list for 250 but could get them for 100, would you pull the trigger? I got those for my new 2022 Mavericks. Couldn't pass up the deal. Guy couldn't sell them at tent sale 'cause of color so told me 100 bucks and they're yours. Couldn't find them in black for
That's awesome, I've found them in the summer for $130 but that's the best I've found them, if they're new or in good condition I would say you got a great deal! I don't even ever look at the color of bindings lol.
I do prefer the Pivots, just historically I've liked Look vs Marker. I think the Griffon's are fine though, Zach (from other videos) skis big mountain terrain (though idk about 25 ft) and has had Griffon's I believe and liked them. Sorry it's hard to give binding advice since I kind of formed my opinion back in the racing days, and have mostly stuck with Looks when given the option. I think currently though the gap between binding quality has become narrower than it used to be. Sorry not much of an answer, but if you've got the money for Pivots there definitely well made, but als I would guess that the Griffon's should serve you perfectly well. Maybe talk to a Tech at the shop or someone in your community who's dropping that large, because I'm not and don't want to steer you wrong. But from a racing perspective the Looks have always served me really well.
How about “The Worst Of Curated” video? Yes the plugs of BULLSCHLITZ… the many moments of non-expert skiing… the “WHAT?!?!” moments. You have a masterpiece in the making 🤣😂🤣😂
I feel like the maverick would be great for my dad. He is a no nonsense kinda guy who's been skiing his old blizzard tornado I think ? Kind of gs advertised as an all mountain ski. And Ive been watching him last season and I feel like they are too demanding for him. Are the mavericks demanding ? He likes gs turns, moghuls and trees. He also wants to work on his carving technique.
Yeah they're great, very light, carve well, and can keep you afloat in moderate powder! My favorite ski I've seen yet. Would also recommend the Fischer Ranger, it's a nice carving ski with very easy turn initiation, would allow him to get into the turn easily and master the apex of the turn.
7:54 what were they or what would you recommend for me? new to all this but i get cold very easy (probably cuz im a small guy 5'6 and maybe 140 pounds)
In this video I have a first ascent (made by eddie bauer) puffy, but I've also had goodluck with the large down jackets from Patagonia, Columbia or Burton, pack that under a shell and you'll be sitting pretty. You can also get ski boot covers over the top that help for your feet. The high loft is what you're looking for.
@@RicketySkiReviews woah, thanks man! high-loft seemed to be the perfect keyword. Would the burton "AK baker expedition" be what you mean as an example? or too big?
Yeah something like that could work, just make sure you layer it with a shell over it, that one you sent has a very fragile outside and could puncture easily.
Do you have a bag for skis and poles for traveling?
I did back when I traveled more, but idk if I still do, my only advice is that if weight doesn't matter the wheels are nice, but if you have weight limits the wheels add quite a bit of weight.

Smartwool all the way. That’s something I will never compromise on.
Same, willing to give Darn Tough A Try though this year, but Smartwool has been my Go to the past 17 years.

Icebreaker merino wool base layers are amazing.
Try them out.

That's awesome! I've had bad luck with interchangeable but that was back in 2009, and I think they've improved a ton since then.

Just the Amazon Basics one or something I'm not sure, they sell them in a big 8 pack.
