i learned the steering concept when i was 9 because a roblox game has some pretty good physics and lets you build vehicles. the whole time michael was making the first model i was just like “oooh noo”
I learned about it in a shop class with good 3d modeling in middle school and watching the OTV Soap Box Derby made me realize how grateful I am for that class lol
Yeah, I thought it was common sense to know how steering works. I don't remember when I learned it, but I was very curious as a kid. I would study and try to figure out how my remote controlled car works by looking at the wheels and stuff.
Honestly ... I just learned that by observing when I was little ... I m gifted that I am very good visual learner ...

The thing with Micromobility devices, is that people don't wear appropriate protection gear for them. If you come off, even at low speeds, you just get obliterated, and some of these riders in particular are just not going to do well if they come off. I will list my protective gear recommendations later.
I was going to get a One Wheel, but then decided against it because, I'm not only not in America, but I'm not in California specifically lol (repairs, shipping). But my plan was:
- Wrist guards (mandatory, very relevant for the start of this video)
- Helmet of course
- Knee pads (the best way to go is to look at lightweight mountain bike gear, especially the downhill hobby. I was going to go with the Daninese Trail Skins Air or whatever ones)
- Hip padding is a very good idea, though not everyone wants to do that, but my plan was the Leatt 5.0 3DF Impact Shorts
- Then there's elbows, ideally back, and SHOULDERS (very important for boards where you're sideways). My solution to all of this was the REV'IT! Eclipse 2 Jacket (I think I had to size up), WITH the armour swapped out for D3O Ghost Armour ("O" not the number "0". VERY thin and comfy, but protective tech), and a D3O Viper Stealth back protector (all compatible). All just CE level 1 (rather than 2). The jacket material also provides resistance from the road when you slide right across that surface (REALLY unpleasant, and terrible to heal from, so it's important).
I put a LOT of research into this lol.
I noticed at the end of his video that it was an electric moped thingy. I mean people often don't have much protective gear on petrol scooters either, which is wild. You'd think they would wear MORE.
If you're not going to do all of this, at the VERY LEAST, do these things:
1. Don't go more than 10mph on your scooter. Seriously, if you fall, you will hurt yourself. It's still faster and better than walking.
2. Ride on the sidewalk when you can. If there is low traffic, the combination of going manageable speeds and riding on the sidewalk reduces your chances of getting hit by a car.
3. Get off the scooter and walk it when get near sharp corners, children, dogs, the elderly, when going downhill towards people, or around people that are moving unpredictably. In general, get off the scooter and walk it if you have any doubt about safety.
4. Always control the scooter with your feet like a skateboard and use the handlebar for microadjustments
5. Check your brakes and make sure they work frequently
6. Have patience or you will probably commit scooter ankle by accident
I don't fall off my scooter because I follow this set of rules. Mainly the speed is the issue, if you just slow down by a few mph you can drastically reduce your risk of injury, even if you do fall off. I do think that protective gear is a great idea, but these lime scooters don't provide protective gear, and mostly tourists use them, so it's kind of a moot point until they introduce some sort of legislation about that.
i like how in Lily's comment section there are genuine advice for safety like this, but in Michael's comments its like "add jet thrusters to the back! 🗣"

first two points are for everything, last three just for e-scooters
1. advice #5 above is the most important after the speed one. always, ALWAYS CHECK your BRAKES as soon as you start, especially if you're using rentals. check the rear brake and the front brake, one after another
2. ANY CHANGE IN SURFACE COLOUR MIGHT BE A CHANGE IN SURFACE GRIP. even if you're riding 10mph going from dry pavement to wet leaves and trying to turn or brake will knock you down
3. idk about #4, i usually countersteer (like on a bike), it gives me more agility but it might take time to get used to
4. learn how to brake: you should apply both brakes and shift your bodyweight back to not get thrown through the handlebars
5. use proper stance: legs should not be side-by-side, they should be one after another to provide trailing stability, knees should be bent and you must be ready to shift your bodyweight or to absorb a bump at any moment
Keep in mind: there are still some scooters which can be shutdown/locked remotely.

Michael got that idea of steering from how tanks function but his problem was wheels have too much friction to slide like tanks without neutral steering do, and that he didnt brake one side.

I am not sure if Michael fixed the turning mechanism but one wheel needs to move at a different speed than the other when turning so he needs to make sure that the throttle change depending on the direction hes turning.

The Steering concept took a long time to get together, keep in mind that we've been using wheels for like, along time before the concept of smooth steering making the outer wheel taking a longer distance than the inner wheel. It's about distance / speed / torque , so he increased distance, made a leverage for torque, basically a 2D transformer axis, I think? I don't know, its ghost magic. Like when stuff isn't the color it actually is because physical fragmentation or some wizardry. "butterfly wing color a photonic crystal demonstration" Basically its the shape that makes the color, not the actual color.
That's also the concept of wheel differentials which probably also worked against Michael here since the electric scooter wheels are barely coupled and likely to not free-wheel when unthrottled rendering his initial idea to not work as expected. If the inside wheels did free-wheel, it would have worked but with quite a wiiide turn radius.
