Only standing for 17 years, was it worth building them.

Built originally in hot, dry Countries. So obviously unsuitable for British conditions.

At 3:40 the narrator says "not even pets were left behind." What a stupid thing to say! If you're evacuating for any reason, why the hell would you leave your pet anyway.
So it was 21 stories by my count. about 11 and a half (haha) remained.

I know, it's fucking insane. This was 1985! You wouldn't even excuse it had it been 1885. Incredible.

1985, when were they built. Im from a city called dundee in scotland and few were demolished in the mid 90s, and a lot of them were demolished quite recently and they were built between the late 60s and early 70s

Some tower blocks are good quality and need to stay. However, it also comes down to maintaining your home correctly as some residents don't quite do that. Some towers are terrible quality however, like Ronan Point was. We need to keep some as it'd be a waste to tear some of them down.

Went to Gainsborough School, next door. 1975-1979. Used to have friends living in this block. A short walk from Kingsmead Estate, the other side of Mabley Green.

The reason alot of high rises are damp, is because the people that live in them don't look after them, not all people, but many. I live in the 22 floor high rise, and my windows get very condensated when it is warm inside, so I tend to wash them down every two days, otherwise the water drips down the wall and turns it black. Most high rises are nice places to live, if they were well looked after. Some are quite bad, with gaps inbetween the walls and floor, like the infamous Ronan Point.

The internal 'non supporting walls' gave the building extra strength.....

builders should have been sued wot a shite job they did putting those together. Watched another documentary recently where builders confessed that they didn't always screw the walls together right as they were paid bonus on speed not quality.

What a criminal waste of money. First of all erecting jerry built tower blocks and then having to demolish a lot of them because they are unfit for human habitation. I personally do not believe that these became slums because the tenants did not look after them properly. They were no better than the old slums they replaced. This does not just apply to Hackney, but in other cities as well.

I lived on the Holly Street Estate in the early 70s, an estate which has also been demolished. And I can tell you, it was a wonder it lasted even 20 years. That's the price of allowing accountants to make strategic decisions I guess. They may be good at finding the smallest number in a column, but the consequences are self evident. Shoddy and short term solutions benefit no one, and cost far more in the long term.
