- Madison Timelapses 2013
This was shot over the course of the 2012/2013 academic year, where I was lucky enough to get the chance to study abroad at the University of Wisconsin Madison. This film is longer than most of my timelapse projects, but I hope the video is just as enjoyable to watch. It's been amazing to live in Madison for the last year and it will be sorely missed.
Thanks to several different favours around campus I was allowed exclusive access to some great filming locations. Thanks to:
-Kohl Center
-Van Hise
-Wisconsin Energy Institute
(If anyone wants to know where a specific shot is filmed, comment below and I'll let you know).
Cameras -- Nikon D60, Nikon D7000
Software -- DIYPhotoBits Camera Contoller 5.1, After Effects CS5
Song -- Walk On By, Noosa (Sound Remedy Remix)

This is likely to be the last timelapse-only video I release for the near future. I'm thinking of trying out a few more ideas that aren't timelapses, but hopefully just as creative. Any questions/comments are very welcome and I will endeavour to get back to you, and any shares are very welcome. Thanks -- until next time.

One of the greatest cities on Earth. Very happy I spent my college years here. I wish I could go back in time and live that life again.
How I wish!
Hi from the future. I am graduating in 2 years and I just realized how much I am going to miss this place :(
I'm a Madison alumna living on the West Coast. Thank you so much for making my day by letting me relive the best 4 years of my life for 6 minutes.
My Mom has lived in Madison most of her life (almost 50 years) and she really loved this video. She says it helps to see it from someone else's eyes, who doesn't see it everyday, and appreciate it more. We're glad you enjoyed Madison!
This makes us miss Wisconsin even more. Well done *****. Born there, grew up there and can't wait to move back. On Wisconsin!
Great job! I came to Madison for grad school in the 90's and moved away, living abroad several places, and also in another U.S. state. I finally moved back in 2012 and bought a house here. So good to be back. In my opinion, no other city has as much to do per capita.
I lived in Madison for one short year as an exchange student. And yet, there are no words to describe how I miss this place. Excellent video!
For those who are entering college now or already attending, one word of advise: Live it to the fullest!
On Wisconsin!
Ten years later and I still love watching this video 🦡❤️
born and raise in madison, WI. Love my home town but I got bored. Wanted to live in a bigger city. But I do really miss the small city charm of Madison. Definitely a great place to grow up in. People are very friendly, though some people are from small town and are small minded. other then that its great. Better be able to down a few cases of beer if your planing to visit. Try Spotted Cow!!!
Matt Hicks, you are number one....I was there between 2007 and 2010..brought me some pleasant memories...thanks for the video
Loved the 360 spin around the building and the moon rise was worth all the planning.
This is so great, Matt. We still love the time-lapse you did for the Space Voyage set build and this video gives us chills. Thank you!
I love Madison so much. Born and raised on the east side. Living in Brooklyn right now but wishing I was back in Madtown after seeing this!!
Lived there for some time.. the best years of my life. Hopefully I will come back there someday.
This is amazing. Makes me sad I ever moved away from there after 19 years. I'll be back someday, that city is too beautiful and awesome for me to not be there permanently. Great job on this video. I love it.
Thanks for this, dude. I've been out of the country for most of the last 2 years and I watch it whenever I get homesick.
Greatest city on Earth. Take me there again :'(
Best Noosa music video ever.
Came here for school and never left! I love this town! Great video!
Thank you for capturing all the beautiful parts of my favorite city, as well as the emotions involved with them. I almost started crying when I realized I only have a year left (been here for 5 years plus that last year, undergrad plus MS). was a beautiful thing to see and a perfect thing to share with others. thanks :)
bravo, even the snow-y ones made me homesick.
This is a really well done video. I miss Madison a lot.
Lot of memories running through my head watching this.
Literally one of the coolest videos I've ever watched, good work man, hope you enjoyed the year abroad! Come on back anytime we owe ya one!
Great song choice!
I love this! I hope you make more around Madison! :) The song was a great choice for this too!
Fantastic video! A lovely look and what makes downtown Madison so great!
Thanks a lot !! I love your great job !! I recognized several places. I knew Madison ten years ago, when my daugther moved there from Argentina ( where I live) and I came back every year , and specially this year, I'm very happy because.......I have a Madisonian grandson !!!!
You did a great job :) This city really is the jewel of Wisconsin, and I dearly miss my time spend in it. This video eases my homesickness!
Well done. You've captured Madison in a truly unique way. The production quality is exceptional. Cheers!
Makes me homesick, but happy!
Beautiful. Thank you for the video. Also nice music choice.
Gonna move to Madison in a few years. Can't wait! Seems so beautiful.
Love this. Thanks!!!!!
Very good, love Madison. Great capitol shot around 2 minutes.
Makes me homesick. Great video!
Well done! You certainly captured the essence of Madison.
This was fantastic! You had a great mix of seasons and parts of the city.
wish there was a love button!
State Capitol Hyperlapse is BOSS! Great job.
Great video!! I know how long it takes to soot 15 sec of time lapse, it must have been many hours for you. You have done well at capturing a city I dearly love, one that will remain very special to me and will always miss!!
Best one for me was the sunset on Picnic Point. Thanks! Wisconsin, we will be back.
YAY! I miss Madison! Thanks for sharing this great video!
gives me the chills
awesome job man! can't wait to be back in the fall! Go Badgers!
Love it! I cannot wait to return at the end of August! On Wisconsin!
Beautiful!
Nice to see what you were doing out on the Wisconsin Energy Institute balcony! Great job!
-girl you scared the crap out of trying to study on the WEI balcony
This is very cool!! Great job of capturing our fair city!!
Nice job, Matt!
beautiful video of madison! (:
Amazing!
it brings a tier to my eye knowing I left Madison Wisconsin. I want to go back home.but I can't convince my mom, dad & wife to go back with me.
Currently trying to move back and currently feel stupid for leaving. Lesson learned.
Lovely!
This looks fun.
You should do another! This is really good!
Maybe even do one of the construction cranes and stuff. There's a huge apartment boom going on right now.
+Flatvosity Thanks! Unfortunately I no longer live in Madison, so won't be able to film another one of these! Why don't you give it a go? I'm working on a new project in Bristol (England), so hopefully you like that too!
Loved every minute! On Wisconsin! Go Badgers!
The spinning capitol was awesome
You say Wisconsin, you've said it all!
Nice work
This video makes me sad because its my favorite city and I dont live there lol. Its so amazing
Great video. Greater city.
Well done! Love all the seasons & all the locations. GO WEI!!! 4th floor?
Love Madison. Born and raised here. The people are really friendly here and the party scene has never failed. I've been having dreams of Seattle recently though. 24 years in the same city will do that I suppose. Highly recommend visiting or moving to Madison if looking to do so.
getting limited by one city is pathetic tho. imagine this you will only ever feel awesome about something when you have a comparison. which is why people get homesick and won't do so when they are home
I use to live in Madison and super miss it. I live near Seattle now in Washington state. And I don't like it. Washington is full of crime and drugs. And Seattle feels like a rat race. traffic is terrible, and cost for housing is insane. Wisconsin is way better, but I guess the weather is a little better here. just my 2 cents. I guess lots of people like it though or they say they do and are not honest. But getting different city experience is good though.
Madison is getting very dangerous and people here aren't very nice. But I still love this city especially with all the new tall building projects going on.
+whyterhyno17 I live downtown Seattle. I am a fan. (Edit: I suppose I should say I am also from Madison area originally lol)
What do you like about it? And I forgot to mention the people suck.
I like it, thank you. WI ♥
Very nice- I think you did a particularly nice job with the interval timing, everything seemed just right, not too rushed or slow. Do you use any motion tracks at all or is it all done in post?
Nice hixee videos are always good quality
And now I'm homesick.
Can I ask you about the equipment you used to film this?
AMAZING. Brought back all my university memories. Except, I was USUALLY drunk on state street.
Awesome job!! It may be slightly overused, but did you think about giving some of your shots a tilt shift effect in post?
awesome video! 608!
Love the video. Great job. Do you have a link to the song?
Lakeshore path, the Picnic Point section to be exact :)
Would have loved to see a shot of Charter and University during passing time
Thanks for the inspiration! This is something I've wanted to do for a couple months now and plan on doing next spring/summer.
Just curious, what gear and post-processing did you use?
Even for a small city, it has a lot going on
Hello, this video is excellent! Would you be willing to grant permission/give access to about 30 seconds of it to be used in promoting an upcoming teen event in Madison?
If you look at 1:44, it is a trail to Picnic Point.
Where was 3:20 shot?
I did mention the kit briefly in the video description, but I'll elaborate slightly.
Cameras: Nikon D7000 + Nikon D60 (with 18-105mm + 18-55mm lenses)
Tripods: Benro A2970F tripod with BH1 ball-head + Sony VCTR100
Software: To control the D60 (and sometimes the D7000, although that does have a built in intervelometer) I used DIYPhotobits Camera Controller 5.1. For editing it I use the usual Photoshop/After Effects combo, with deflicker plugins.
Great Video!!!
I know you left Madison, but do you know anyone who does cool videos like this? We do couple events in Madison during the school year...and would love to have someone make this type of video for the show/event.
On Wisconsin!
Aw I miss my home
too cold
Curious as to how you did the footage of the capital that rotated around all sides of it? Did you time lapse that or just take multiple pictures from each angle and piece together?
+Sydney Durrah Baiscally I just walked in a huge circle around the capitol building, taking pictures at regular intervals (about every meter) and then composited them into a timelapse. I had to do a lot of aligning of the images also. Does that make sense?
+hixee , Eerything is over priced in New York so I'm moving out of NyC and I'm moving to Wisconsin and I hope to find a house that I can rent for around 900-1300 dollars my rent in Nyc is 1700 dollars and it pisses me off to have to pay this much.
Makes me so proud to be a badger!
Was this done via stills or was this done using actual video? Its awesome!! Please respond ... I'm trying to learn
This was created by taking stills on a DSLR and then combining them into this footage. Somewhere in the region of 20,000 stills were captures for this project. I'm happy to answer any questions and give any tips (that I can), I'm not a professional at this, but figured out a few things over the years.
Wisconsin Here I come
+FaZe1415 FaZe Up
You here yet?
SconnieKush
Yes I have been here since july and I am loving it.
FaZe1415 am up in appleton xD madison is awesome
3 people didn't go to UW Madison...
People in Madison sure move quickly
I was there in times of trouble, the 60's. It all looks so overdeveloped, even Bascomb Hill.
Is the Mifflin Street area still there. Is the Green Lantern eating coop still there? I am glad the flower tables and chairs are still there outside the Ratskeller by the lake.

Can our company use any of this footage if we credit and/or compensate you?
Hi Caleb - please drop me a private message and we can discuss. Thanks!
@@hixee I'm not seeing a place to do that... can you email me at caleb@greenclockagency.com?
Olbrich Gardens, east side off lake monona
Where was 5:10?
I've was born in and lived in/near Madison for 30 years and don't recognize it but the trail and area look amazing, as does the rest of this video. Great work!
maybe Middleton?
Lakeshore Path
I'm lucky, I live there
This may sound a little weird, but here we go. I am wondering if you would grant me permission to use portions of your fabulous timelapse video for an in-church promotional video I am putting together. The intent of the video is to show brief clips of fast-paced life to emphasize the importance of slowing down for prayer. No intention of trying to make money -- it's promoting a day of prayer at our church. (We're located in a Madison suburb, so these images are fairly local -- better than stock footage!) I would only use up to 10-20 seconds from your product, and I would include credit for your work in my promotional video. (I would not include your soundtrack, so there would not be a concern over music copyright issues). Hope to hear back from you.
Hi Vaughn. As this is for non-commercial use, that should be fine. Please share a link to your finished product when you're done - it's always great to see!
this is fucking sick
at 3:20, where is that?
Olbrich Botanical Gardens... I believe.
Media Mavens CG yup
I climbed the crane at 2:50 and after a party at 23 mills.
Dear Vanessa, my statement read "overdeveopled" as in too much development.
