People forget that Ms. Ross blazed the trail. She was the first Black entertainer, as a solo artist, to play the same venues as White superstars and to charge the same (or higher) fees. I have heard many Black (especially female) artists acknowledge her accomplishment. If she had failed or if her shows had been lackluster, someone else would have had to blaze the trail. But, she was proud and happy to do it, and she did it like no one else could so. Her live shows are the best!

I adore the Funk Brothers. But i love James Jamersons bass. Again he shows why he is the pioneer of electric bass playing. Whether it is "I Will Survive, Do the Hustle, or Al Green"s fist full of hits, his style and technical prowess shines through. I wish he were here to speak about it. RIP James!!!

You know the big vocals on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" were not sung by Diana Ross'... Diana has a pretty lilting voice, suited for songs like "Touch Me In The Morning", and "My Mistake" her duet with Marvin Gaye...
"The Andantes", they were like the "Funk Brothers" were as the "go to" musicians for motown. "The Andantes", were the "all girl group" vocalists for Ashford & Simpson's songs, including Dians Ross' version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", they also sang with "Martha Reeves & The Vandellas", and many others. My friend pointed it out to me long ago.
And I saw it and heard it right away. Diana Ross is pretty much just the spoken word part, and some background harmonies on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"...

You're welcome. I'm a big fan of Diana ever since 1967 (i was 10 yo then) The Funk brothers are great and Ashford & Simpson wrote fantastic songs!
My beloved grandmother was dying of lung cancer when this song was big. I was 15. She had just turned 66. When she died) on October 26 1971, I sang this to her st the top of my lungs on a beautiful fall day....
So , sorry for your loss, I'm sure shes' smiling down on you from above. Today & everyday. May she rest in God's eternal love & peace.

This a classic production by Ashford & Simpson w/Valerie Simpson on piano. Diana Ross put her ALL into this. Her voice was meant to be handled by A&S. Great song....love it.

This is just TOO MUCH!!!!!! So excellent to hear all of the contributions to this masterpiece. I can just imagine everyone inside Studio A in Detroit with smiles and bopping their heads to the beat, and knowing how amazing this sounded when they were hard at work making it happen. There is NO other sound like The Motown Sound.
American Treasures of the last half of the 20th Century that we marvel at and days of youth which we long for. There will never be another decade like the 1960s and this man has done beautiful Justice to these recordings.RIP Sir your still missed two years after your journey ended.

The writing of Ashford and Simpson is astonishing and the background singers gives this song something special. The Funk Brothers and especially bass player James Jameson gives this song soul.

This song was the number one priority at Motown at the time of this recording. All available resources were summoned by Berry Gordy for this session. It was the launch of DRs solo career and it had to be HUGE! I love this remix because I hear so much going on with the Detroit Symphony orchestra. Jamersons high bass with the tinker bell intro is One of the prettiest sections in all of recorded music. So many hills and valleys of emotion in this song. I am undone

I 1st heard this song in the late summer of '70, as I & a friend were hitch-hiking from Denver to SoCal. It was while we were hitching a ride that took us to San Bernardino CA, at 3AM on old US40/ Route 66, that "KOMA in Oklahoma",played this masterpiece; transfixed, all there was at that moment was Diana & her soaring voice, singing " a musical, " Mona Lisa". Motown was blessed with SO many great artists at that time and, unfortunately, Diana wasn't the best. She was sleeping with Barry Gordy that's why they got this masterpiece...

I sang ain't no mountain high enough to my daughter from birth thru 6yrs old . Always loved both versions, the original by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell AND Diana Ross & Supremes version. Just recently discovered this version of the song and I must say it is my favorite absolutely lovely.
Just to share an intemporel sensation like this masterpiece provides, ladies and gentlemen with this I can say that I have been honoured to have lived on earth.
