I am a writer with a background in graphic design. Early in my design career I recall people wondering if “computer art” was going to stick around, and suggesting that using Photoshop was “cheating”. Today we recognize that drawing on a tablet is more efficient drawing, and you can’t just push a button and have it create a masterpiece. I believe AI writing tools like Sudowrite will be seen the same way one day. Making the “cheating” notion even more ridiculous is the fact that ghostwriting has been around for a very long time. You can pay someone to write the entire book without your involvement and give you credit. It’s preposterous to call it cheating when a tool suggested a line of dialogue here and there, or helped me brainstorm the elements that make up my characters and world. It’s like suggesting that it’s cheating to use an online name generator. If it’s cheating, best of luck writing your masterpiece without any talent.

The character creation tools are actually quite good and it was surprising how it could just as easily generate fantasy creatures like goblins and elves as it was to make detailed descriptions of doctors in the local hospital, complete with education background, relationships with other characters, and relevant interests.

I was thinking of it like, "with that logic, if you get suggestions and feedback from editors, critique partners, or beta readers, then that would be 'cheating' isn't it?" And, if that's the case, every single one of us are "cheaters," so why not use a robot for it?

My new project that I'm working on, I've brainstormed and got most of the plot and world down, but I still haven't figured out the characters, including my MC, so hopefully it'll help me with that or with just getting started. A lot times, my characters get formed as I write and discover the story (I'm a pantser), but with this project, I'm still having trouble figuring out where/how to start. I may just have to write out of order and start with a scene that I do know.

I found that the original narrative was a little too much like Stephen R. Lawhead's Endless Knot series, plagiarizing on a lot of the opening of his story. I fell in love with that trilogy many years ago and dreamt of writing my own portal fantasy. Sudowrite basically turned some of the narrative around for a much better twist.

Give it a try - it is trained on human writing so everything it comes up with is based on human writing.
