Do all you can do now to prepare for some frigate COLD weather that will be settling into half of the United States, starting next week. The boot warmer that I use to dry my boots and gloves cost me approximately $20 something. It's called MAXXDry (silent shoe and boot warmer). You look cozy in your snuggy. Great tips! We are so cold here in GA, too. Last year, many of our neighbors had pipes burst. Our homes are not built for the cold weather we’ve been getting. We run the dishwasher and washing machine throughout the night and keep our under the sink cabinets open with our heat turned up. Doing what we can to keep the water moving. -17 is 'epic'. We get snow in Winter here on our homestead - nothing like that though. It is good for you that it is a regular thing, you have items and techniques in place. Hi Krista, we have a great weather station for the Pacific Northwest too. When we lived in the Western Side of WA we had the boot warmer. I had forgotten about them-great idea to put the gloves on them. We haven't had the frigid weather yet, it's been a milder winter. I wonder if that weather will move west. I love your new blanket sweater and hat. It's perfect timing with this cold weather. I think that it's a great idea to double up on the gloves because when you have arthritis in the hands the prickling in the fingers from the cold it is so painful. Yes we much prepare thank you for the heads up!
Your right!! It's bitter cold and people that live in the south are not used to that kind of cold for a prolonged time. This could last for up to 2 weeks for them they are predicting.

Thank you so much for the heads up and information for people in those areas. I am on California zone 10b-11 but I grew up in the Midwest so I know cold. It is scary to think of what people in Texas and those other areas went through a couple of years ago. I hope and pray the word gets to the people that need it.
We have wind picking up today and cold starting Friday like you said. I like the boot dryer for your gloves and adding a smaller light glove is a good tip too. We shall see how cold it gets, most of my veggies are done now.
Thanks, Krista. Many of us live in what I would call unique micro-climates which, while always part of overall weather forecast trends & predictions, always with unique proclivities. The southern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is exactly that. It can be snowy & brutally cold in the mountains around us, yet almost balmy here in the Valley. And in the Valley, we're at over 1,000' altitude so it can go down to 2°F in the morning & that same day almost 60°F in the afternoon! The warm air flows in & sinks into the southern Valley even while the Blue Ridge to our east, the Allegheny Mountains to our west & Massanutten Mountain to our north are all frozen! Definitely takes hardy & adaptable plants to grow here that can handle the big temperature swings! I just cover my banana trees & little palm tree & fig trees in straw. The Eucalyptus tree loses its top, but never dies back to its roots, even with the cold mornings because the cold never really freezes the ground hard & deep. But the really deep freezes are always west of us. The Jetstream & Gulfstream pattern always keeps us from being a frozen tundra. I mean, southeastern Virginia is downright tropical! And so the southern Shenandoah Valley can be an interesting weather ride every winter! I love sometimes walking outside in my t-shirt & looking at the Blue Ridge just east of me all covered in snow! Meanwhile y'all in the Great White North can be solid frozen & covered in icy snow! Microclimates are a real thing!!! Love your videos & stay warm, Krista ❤❤❤!
Hi John. What a very interesting microclimate that you live in. I also live in a microclimate at a lower elevation surrounded by bogs, which are wetlands with a huge moose population to the north, west and south of me. To the east of me is the Northumberland Strait.
I am only 90 ft elevation from the ocean. Even though we have had some really cold temps it's been pretty warm during the day. Enough to melt the snow and the melt is being absorbed by the ground, which lets me its not frozen very deeply. Strange winter.
MOOSE! Now that's what I'ma talkin' 'bout!!! We have plenty of bears, absolutely zero moose (mooses???) hehehe... Yep, y'all have water all 'round you. Makes for its own unique climate for sure! That's what I like about weather forecasts. They're sometimes quite laughable cuz weather is always a deterministic chaotic system. Trends can be forecast with a degree of accuracy, but no one knows the exact upcoming situations at any individual locations. My big thing is helping homeless cats. But anyone homeless needs shelter & safety. You're amazing, Krista!

We just got our wood stove put in two Winters ago. That's one thing I think people should really really try to do! You can cook on it and keep yourself warm!
I agree totally and I hope to get a small one for here eventually, as I use electric heat. I do have 2 propane heaters if the power goes out but I won't run those when I go to sleep.
We’ve been having unseasonably warm temps around -4 to +4 but we’re scheduled to get back to normal -15 next week. I’ve been investing into heated socks, gloves, jackets etc. Thanks for the reminder that we’ve gotta be prepared for these sudden drops.

Yup, strange weather indeed. 🙏very powerful. The lemon seeds haven't been planted yet. The seeds are ready though and so far as of yesterday the ginger has not sprouted yet but I have hope and 🙏❤
So far, it looks like we might get a light snow on the 10th, but temps are only in the 30s instead of the earlier 20s that we experienced. That means our greens will get super sweet.🎉
It depends on where you are in the States Jen. I don't recall where you are exactly. MI maybe? From what I gather from the weather networks is, the cold from is going to dip down from the arctic and divide the US, with one side being above average temps and the other below. I'm sure some will be borderline. Your greens will taste better with cooler temps for sure ☺

I've seen news footage of homelessness in BC, Sandra, and I would say it's a big population because of the nicer temps. Even here in NB, the number of people without homes is staggering. With the rising cost of everything, mainly rents, people just can't afford the cost of living. There are so many people displaced and still living in tents in NC and TN from the (bad storm) that ripped their homes away 😔
Weird weather is happening all over. This cold front may past through Idaho but it's going to settle into central to the southeastern States. Major cold coming.

Thanks for the heads up, Krista. It's currently in the upper 60s here in the mountain South of Virginia & it's been raining with tornado watches all around. I'm looking out the window right now & it almost looks like Spring weather. I checked my local forecast & yes, by Friday we're supposed to get cold, but nothing unusual, highs in the 40s, lows in the 20s. That's normal here in January, we always ride a rollercoaster, yet not any really steep climbs or falls. I see y'all had some snow. We don't get much snow around here anymore. The 12" per year average seems to have changed to 12" a decade now & we definitely suffer from what would normally be Springtime outbreaks of violent weather, but now in Winter. Such as it is. I have my windows open right now & can hear the warm wind howling through the screens. Catbillies are excited at blowing leaves & interesting sounds. But we're used to our rollercoaster weather, nothing different than the past 5 years "round here. We appreciate y'all's warning even as we get these crazy changes all the time. You have to live here to understand & know it! Love to y'all from the catbillies & I❤❤❤ !

Hello Krista, great info, I had not seen anything about this yet. I'm on the S.E. Coast of NC, Eastern Seaboard. Once, in my adult life, we got to an overnight low of 8 degrees F, but, most winters, our coldest runs 15-18 F overnight for a few days here and there Jan-Feb. I hope I never see the temps like you experience. I don't handle the cold very well. We were 71 F today with 51 F expected tonight. I'm going to go see your weather person and check out his forcast. We were in the 20's last week thru Christmas and needed the wood stove a few times. Here in the south, it's up down from hot to cold. Take care and stay warm.❤

You have a short time to blow out all your water lines, get supplies, cover crops, get extra bedding, make sure the generator is working, fill up gas jugs, bring in tons of extra wood and protect all your infrastructures and critters. I'm so glad that I did this video so you can get prepared for it ❤
I knew about the cold last week and wanted to put that video out to warn everyone. You and I may actually be on the outskirts this time of the frigid cold. I wish it was opposite because there's a lot of folks that aren't prepared for those extreme temps down south and at least we know how to handle it and what to do. I used to allow the manure and shavings to build up in the winter and just put fresh on top daily during big cold snaps. It creates a warm compost under their feet. Maybe you could put out a video about getting prepared for this cold as you have a larger audience than me.
@AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu I definitely believe in the deep liter method here. I think I started a video on that but scrapped it afterward due to being too dark in the coop when I filmed it. Yes, I'd much rather we get the cold than those down south. They are quite ill-adept by nature.
I’m preparing for both arctic Cold(technically I haven’t see -30c here yet) and the freeze and thaw cycles here. That’s the temp here go figure ❤ take CaRe from out west
Those pvc gloves look like the ones im trying out this year. So far so good but they do get warm which causes sweating. What i should have done was get a second pair so while one pair is drying i can use the back up. Now that i know they are worth the money ill get a few more pair.
Yes, they do get warm, lol. Picking up another is a great option for sure or buy a $20 boot dryer like I have a put your gloves on that so the heat goes up into the fingers and drys them out good.
@AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu for a boot dryer I'd have to run the Gen and run an extension cord thru a cracked open window. They dry on the floor in front of the wood stove over night but if I wanted to swap them over for a dry pair during the day.....doesn't work very well 😂

But the really deep freezes are always west of us. The Jetstream & Gulfstream pattern always keeps us from being a frozen tundra. I mean, southeastern Virginia is downright tropical! And so the southern Shenandoah Valley can be an interesting weather ride every winter! I love sometimes walking outside in my t-shirt & looking at the Blue Ridge just east of me all covered in snow! Meanwhile y'all in the Great White North can be solid frozen & covered in icy snow! Microclimates are a real thing!!!

Hi John. What a very interesting microclimate that you live in. I also live in a microclimate at a lower elevation surrounded by bogs, which are wetlands with a huge moose population to the north, west and south of me. To the east of me is the Northumberland Strait.
I am only 90 ft elevation from the ocean. Even though we have had some really cold temps it's been pretty warm during the day. Enough to melt the snow and the melt is being absorbed by the ground, which lets me its not frozen very deeply. Strange winter.
MOOSE! Now that's what I'ma talkin' 'bout!!! We have plenty of bears, absolutely zero moose (mooses???) hehehe...
Yep, y'all have water all 'round you. Makes for its own unique climate for sure! That's what I like about weather forecasts. They're sometimes quite laughable cuz weather is always a deterministic chaotic system. Trends can be forecast with a degree of accuracy, but no one knows the exact upcoming situations at any individual locations. My big thing is helping homeless cats. But anyone homeless needs shelter & safety. You're amazing, Krista!
@@4catbillies Thanks. You made me laugh with your reaction about the moose, lol 😂They are a huge issue here with 50 mls of nothing but big blinking signs warning people at night. I don't usually drive at night anymore.
We just got our wood stove put in two Winters ago. That's one thing I think people should really really try to do! You can cook on it and keep yourself warm!
I agree totally and I hope to get a small one for here eventually, as I use electric heat. I do have 2 propane heaters if the power goes out but I won't run those when I go to sleep.
We’ve been having unseasonably warm temps around -4 to +4 but we’re scheduled to get back to normal -15 next week.
I’ve been investing into heated socks, gloves, jackets etc.

Yup, strange weather indeed. 🙏very powerful. The lemon seeds haven't been planted yet. The seeds are ready though and so far as of yesterday the ginger has not sprouted yet but I have hope and 🙏❤
So far, it looks like we might get a light snow on the 10th, but temps are only in the 30s instead of the earlier 20s that we experienced. That means our greens will get super sweet.🎉
It depends on where you are in the States Jen. I don't recall where you are exactly. MI maybe? From what I gather from the weather networks is, the cold from is going to dip down from the arctic and divide the US, with one side being above average temps and the other below. I'm sure some will be borderline. Your greens will taste better with cooler temps for sure ☺

I share your concerns about the homeless and people without the means to protect themselves against the weather, Krista. We have so many people living on the street here in Victoria because of our mild climate.

I've seen news footage of homelessness in BC, Sandra, and I would say it's a big population because of the nicer temps. Even here in NB, the number of people without homes is staggering. With the rising cost of everything, mainly rents, people just can't afford the cost of living. There are so many people displaced and still living in tents in NC and TN from the (bad storm) that ripped their homes away 😔

Thanks for the heads up, Krista. It's currently in the upper 60s here in the mountain South of Virginia & it's been raining with tornado watches all around. I'm looking out the window right now & it almost looks like Spring weather. I checked my local forecast & yes, by Friday we're supposed to get cold, but nothing unusual, highs in the 40s, lows in the 20s. That's normal here in January, we always ride a rollercoaster, yet not any really steep climbs or falls. I see y'all had some snow. We don't get much snow around here anymore. The 12" per year average seems to have changed to 12" a decade now & we definitely suffer from what would normally be Springtime outbreaks of violent weather, but now in Winter. Such as it is. I have my windows open right now & can hear the warm wind howling through the screens. Catbillies are excited at blowing leaves & interesting sounds. But we're used to our rollercoaster weather, nothing different than the past 5 years "round here. We appreciate y'all's warning even as we get these crazy changes all the time. You have to live here to understand & know it!

Hello Krista, great info, I had not seen anything about this yet. I'm on the S.E. Coast of NC, Eastern Seaboard. Once, in my adult life, we got to an overnight low of 8 degrees F, but, most winters, our coldest runs 15-18 F overnight for a few days here and there Jan-Feb. I hope I never see the temps like you experience. I don't handle the cold very well. We were 71 F today with 51 F expected tonight. I'm going to go see your weather person and check out his forcast. We were in the 20's last week thru Christmas and needed the wood stove a few times. Here in the south, it's up down from hot to cold. Take care and stay warm.❤
Good morning Donna. I'm so glad that you have time to prepare for what's coming, because you will experience this kind of cold in your lifetime. You have a short time to blow out all your water lines, get supplies, cover crops, get extra bedding, make sure the generator is working, fill up gas jugs, bring in tons of extra wood and protect all your infrastructures and critters. I'm so glad that I did this video so you can get prepared for it ❤
There is cold coming and I'm preparing here ahead of time for my birds.
I knew about the cold last week and wanted to put that video out to warn everyone. You and I may actually be on the outskirts this time of the frigid cold. I wish it was opposite because there's a lot of folks that aren't prepared for those extreme temps down south and at least we know how to handle it and what to do. I used to allow the manure and shavings to build up in the winter and just put fresh on top daily during big cold snaps. It creates a warm compost under their feet. Maybe you could put out a video about getting prepared for this cold as you have a larger audience than me.
@AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu I definitely believe in the deep liter method here. I think I started a video on that but scrapped it afterward due to being too dark in the coop when I filmed it. Yes, I'd much rather we get the cold than those down south. They are quite ill-adept by nature.

Those pvc gloves look like the ones im trying out this year. So far so good but they do get warm which causes sweating. What i should have done was get a second pair so while one pair is drying i can use the back up. Now that i know they are worth the money ill get a few more pair.
Yes, they do get warm, lol. Picking up another is a great option for sure or buy a $20 boot dryer like I have a put your gloves on that so the heat goes up into the fingers and drys them out good.
@AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu for a boot dryer I'd have to run the Gen and run an extension cord thru a cracked open window. They dry on the floor in front of the wood stove over night but if I wanted to swap them over for a dry pair during the day.....doesn't work very well 😂

Adapt 2030 is a great channel, too. I've got that sweater. Don't cut wood in it the sawdust gets embedded in the pocket. Ask me how I know lol. Glad you did this update. 🫂 🙏
