- www.engvid.com "I have eaten." "I had eaten." What's the difference, and when do use each form? In this important grammar lesson, learn how to distinguish between past perfect and present perfect. You'll learn the correct form of each tense, and when each should be used. Then take the quiz at www.engvid.com/present-perfect... .
Ronnie is literally the best teacher, she teaches really good and at the same time knows how to joke!!! wish all teachers were like her
Yessss she's better than my English teachers at school

I am an Iraqi Arab and we have this topic in the English language course
I'd like to know in which situations we have to use past perfect or present perfect
Me to
we use present perfect when we want to describe something happened aleady in the past also continue in the present and it will continue in the future.
Ha???
We use the PRESENT PERFECT to talk about actions that happened in the past but has a connection in the present or talk about expiriences:
- I have read the book for days. // I have lived in London since 1998
And the PAST PERFECT, we use it to talk about time up of a certain point in the past:
- She had published her first poem by the time she was eight.
@@Vaanniee thank you for that , and can you explain the past perfect more for me , i mean is it an action that finished or still has an effect?
Ronnie you are the best!!!! I'm an English teacher in Argentina. In these times of Pandemia your videos (as well as your companions') are helping me to teach grammar on line to my students since we are undergoing "social isolation" to prevent a fast contagion of coronavirus. The videos are clear and great fun. Thanks for sharing them with us. You are not only doing a great teaching job but also your are providing fun in learning.

Omg, where were you?
It's what I needed.
Ty so much don't leave making videos.
differences and more:
The Present Perfect influences the present, while the Past Perfect is completely in the past.
ex, "I have been in NYC" (present perfect : have or has + past participle) so you were in nyc but you're still there.
"I had already fallen asleep when you called last night" (past perfect) A past perfect sentence has 2 parts. One part contains had + past participle of the main verb in the sentence. The other part contains a verb in the simple past tense. Either part can come first. In this sentence the parts are:
1 - I had already fallen asleep ( had + verb in past participle: fallen)
2 - when you called last night (verb in a simple past tense :called
The Past Perfect may be accompanied by date and can be a specific time in the past or not, but the present perfect is not accompanied by date or a specific time in the past.
thanks a lot.

My english is still poor, but have loved your lesson, teacher ronie. Tanks a lot.I am john, from Brazil
U are soo funny i like your class !!
Ronnie, I have a question... When are we using Past Perfect and when Present Perfect? In which situations?
Past simple is used when describing an action that has occurred many times and has the potential to continue happening. For example, I have listened to their music many times. It could also simply be a response to a question. For example, have you seen my dog? No, I haven't seen your dog. Therefore, past simple indicates that there is the potential for you to go to the museum again or find the dog. However, in past perfect the possibility of that action or event occurring again is unlikely or impossible. For example, I had never seen anything so beautiful before in my life. Or, I had watched the movie so many times that I memorized it. This is different from "I have watched..." because for one reason or another the person who "had watched..." the movie no longer watches it while the person who "has watched..." it continues to do so. Hope that was helpful!
Jocelyn F Good explanation but she was talking about when to use past perfect and present perfect, not simple past and past perfect.
Thank you so much for this easy explaning .
Hello from Greece!! Ronnie you're the Best Teacher 😉 I love you!
Thanks, We need an examples, specially when we can use Present perfect and Past Perfect???
Thank you for your explanation, now I already know how it is formed. But I'd like to know how to use these tenses. Could you please give us examples showing the difference between simple past, present perfect and past perfect.
I'm Moçambicano,my name's Isac,but i like to learning much inglish,good teatcher.
Ronnie this is your best costume ever. Including hairstyle 😍
thanks, but how to use it ??
present perfect is use to talk about something u did last time and the result of what u did is still there in the present time.
Example: I have finished my homework. = it means u did your work in the past (maybe last night, last week etc) and your homework is still with you in the present while you are talking.
past perfect is use to say something u did in the past and the result of what u did is no longer with you in the present or it is now no longer in the present.
Example: I had had an Iphone last year. = it means that in the past (probably yesterday, last week, last year etc.. ) you have your Iphone with you but then somehow you lost it and don't have it now in the present.
The first had written there is the "Rule" to write/say something in past particilple form. while the second had is the past participle of the verb "have".
hope you clear with this.

You have not explained why and when we should use the present perfect nor the past perfect
but she explain very well the difference between the tenses, and free? come on!!
Come on bro it's just a video about grammar
Refering to the present about something done: "I have accomplished the task"
Refering to a specific point in the past about something already done: In 1974 the tower had already been built
Thank you
Nigel Campbell but we can use past simple for action that happened in specific point of the past
yes we can. It will depends in our choice. but if you will take an English exam much better if you will use advance grammar than simple grammar.

--I´m going to explain what are the differences in use of the two forms, with the permission of our teacher, the following :
-- The present perfect form is used when there´s a connection with the present, example: I´ve read since I was a child ( I started reading when I was a child, and now that I´m older, only a little bit, I carry on reading ).
-- The past perfect form is when there´s an action that happened before the past simple, example: My grandmother studied French in 1975, but years before she had studied English.
-----------
-- There´s one thing I´d like to ask to our teacher, and it is the construction of the interrogative and the negative with the Past Perfect. Is is posible to use the Did in negative and interrogative sentences ? Example: I didn´t have eaten my sandwich when my uncle arrived at my place yesterday. ( I hadn´t eaten my sanwich ... ) ... Can we use both forms ? Thanks.
Carlos España No you can't use "didn't" with the past perfect.
Negatives should be: I hadn't eaten my sandwich
Questions: Had you eaten your sandwich?
MissMakeUpYourMind Ok. Thank you.

What is the difference between "Have you finished your homework?" and "Did you finish your homework?"
I know that the first one is in the present perfect and the second one is in the simple past..
But ,can you elaborate more & give example of situations to distinguish these two?
Can you make a video particularly for this?
Thanks in advance.
"Have you finished your homework?" - this question sounds like "Can you show me right now your howework, which you have finished?". "Did you finish your homework?" - that's more like "Did you have in the past a moment, when you finished your homework?" - sounds a little bit similar to the first question, but it actually doesn't ask about result of the work, which can be shown right now. My idea of "present perfect" is you should use it when you talk about some result, and simple past - when you want to mention something happened in the past, without mentioning result of this event.
Best way of teaching love it.
mam ronnie has the best teaching skill to clear the concept
Please Ronnie, I listened to your lecture on present and past perfect and it was fantastic - but the only thing missing of which I was waiting to hear was for you to differentiate between "Present and past perfect" that is, when to use them in our daily conversation, but unfortunately, you didn't!
Present perfect is more common especially in our daily conversation , however past perfect is quite same as past simple .
On the other side present perfect is something happen from the past and still happen now that is not the same as past perfect because past always finish obvious !
present perfect is use to talk about something u did last time and the result of what u did is still there in the present time.
The first had written there is the "Rule" to write/say something in past particilple form. while the second had is the past participle of the verb "have".
hope you clear with this.
kajah gajah thank you so much ,you really make it very easy
I still don't get when to use them.... those two..... Anyone can tell when to use past perfect and present perfect?
Have - you will use when you want to talk about things that happened in the past without time reference (like: today, yesterday, etc). Normally you will use as time referece, a word that gives a general idea when that thing was happened, like "recently".
Simple past:
"Yesterday, I saw Mary."
Present perfect:
"Recently I have seen Mary."
Past perfect - you will use when you want to talk about things that happened before any other event.
"When I went to Brazil, I had seen Mary" (You see? He saw Mary BEFORE go to Brasil.
Gervasio Mathias . . . . . . . . . ............ *light bulb*
OH!!!
I think I get it, so in short:
Have- use with the action that happened in the past, can't use with "time reference" as it already is a time reference by itself
Had- use whe you wanna talk about things which happened before the event in the past
Right!!!???
Thank you very, Gervasio Mathias!
Bhapapath Visutvatanasak
Yeah:
Have = present perfect: it is used to say things that happened in the past, but isen't so important to say exactly when.
Like: "Recently I have gone to Brazil." You see. You know that I went to Brazil, but you don't know exactly when. Could be last week, or last year...
Gervasio Mathias Oh!
Thank you again Gervasio Mathias!
+Gervasio Mathias "recently i have gone to Brazil" is wrong. It has to be "recently i went to Brazil"
You are the best of best teacher who i have ever seven. Thank you :)

Hi Inggrid, I have one question for you. Could I use time "2 years ago" for this sentence, eq:
I have been studying English since 2 years ago? (Since combined with 2 years ago).
It means so clearly which is an action had happened in the spesific past time, but actually it's still happening in today!
What do you think about this?

It's just what I learned, I hope help someone!
Present perfect vs Past perfect.
For the sentences: I, you, we and They - 'Have' to say in Present Perfect. Use 'Has' for sentence
He, She and It.
Exemple: I have a motocycle. (Negative form: I haven't a motocycle.
She has a car. She hasn't a car.)
Questions: Have I a motocycle? (Negative form: Haven't I a motocycle?
Has she a car? Hasn't she a car?)
For the sentences in Past Perfect use: 'Had'.
Exemple: They had a good computer. (Negative form: They hadn't a good computer.)
Question: Had They a good computer? (Negative question: Hadn't a good computer?)
Thank you for your explanation. It was amazing :)
