I am absolutely SHOCKED italy sings in italian at eurovision. I would have guessed theyd be the only non-english country to sing their songs in english, but surprisingly their eurovision songs r in their language!
@@JeSuisRene So was 2016 but still, bi/multilingual songs are often really good as well. I really liked Hungary 2011, Bulgaria 2012, Israel 2014, Romania 2015, Slovenia 2014, Italy 2016, France 2016, Ukraine 2016 and France 2017
Their entries are always in Italian because they are the winners of the Sanremo Festival and I think there's a rule they have to have only Italian language songs in the festival
Gente di mare (1987) is my all time favourite ESC entry. Nel blu dipinto di blu (1958) topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts and won two Grammy awards. A real classic!
pumpkin pie if you are obsessed with that song, be sure to listen to her other stuff if you haven't already. I can listen to her all day, everyday for the rest of my life, and never get bored. Her voice is so emotional and sweet.
Since their return in the competition, they always bring amazing songs. Grande amore is my all time favourite Eurovision song and their entry in 2018 was very special as well.
The contest changed when Italy left and it changed again once they returned... They have a real strong influence over the music quality. 1969 sounds like Mariah Carey's 'I'll be there'
The best songs for me: "Nel blu dipinto di blu" (Volare) sang and writted by one of the graetest italian singer of ever, Domenico Modugno (another masterpieces are "Meraviglioso", "La lontananza", "Tu si' na cosa grande per me") and "I treni di Tozeur" by Franco Battiato and Alice (she is a famous singer that wins Sanremo Festival in 1981 with a beautiful song called "Per Elisa", about the fight against addictions like drugs and bad loves, the author of this song is the same Battiato). He is a real italian legend, a very famous and talented songwriter, in the first 70s he brought in Italy electronic music, and his lyrics are about mysticism and life. He is for Italy like Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen for Usa, unfortunatly he isn't famous around the world (just in France), now he doesn't sing anymore but his songs are explosive mix. Try to listen "Voglio vederti danzare", "L'era del cinghiale bianco", "La cura", "Summer on a solitary beach" "Bandiera bianca", "Shock in my town"... he sounded really current... excuse me for my imperfect english, I hope that I've helped you to look for good music! Let me know what you think about this artists and songs :-) Greatings for your video!
Non Ho L'eta, Fiume di Parole and L'Essenziale are pure masterpieces. Si, Era, L'amore e Femina, Grande Amore and No Degree of Separation are excellent songs. I don't care much for Insieme though.
Think I agreed with everything except I do love 1984 and 2014, they have plenty of not outstanding songs but they have the most absolute masterpieces of any Eurovision country in my opinion which is why it's my favourite country. I can't believe they only won twice, they should have 10 wins by now.
My Top 8 from 2011 - 2018 8. 2011 - Not a Fan 7. 2016 - Not a Fan as well 6. 2014 - Crazy, but i like it 5. 2013 - Simple and Nice 4. 2017 - Guilty Pleasure 3. 2012 - Really Good Song, but English - Italian ? No. 2. 2018 - My Runner - Up 1. 2015 - My Winner
I love all posts from Italy at the ESC I hope that we will win soon I live only a month in Rome I love my new home. I love the language I love every song sung in Italian. I can not really name a favorite because I love all songs from Italy so much that it is very good in its own way.
I have such a soft spot for Italopop, I think it's due to growing up in the 80s, I guess that music was popular in Soviet Union? :). Insieme is such a great example! Glad it won! And it was actually great to know from your video that many of the greatest Italopop stars have found their way to Eurovision too. I discovered many such examples from this current ESC history tutorial - like 85 and 87 :) I'm usually rooting for Italy quite a lot, next to Sweden, they have turned out to be my favorite country - I absolutely agree with all your comments about the songs, and that they are a power player and it's definitely not a matter of if, it's a matter of when :). The first time i ever tuned in to Eurovision, was in 1991, when the contest took part in Italy, so in my memory, Italy and Eurovision somehow form a whole, and having the contest without them for many years was absolutely unnatural. I'm very very happy they bounced back strong. My all time top three has 2018, 2016 and 1990 :) and many artists that represent the country, actually invite me to get to know more about their music and acquire their other works, and listen to it outside ESC :). Just look at Mia Martini! What drama, what emotion!
I wondered what you would think of Avrei Voluto (1989). Your reaction was “shouty” and you really flinched. Exactly the same reaction I had back in 1989! Weirdly though, I’ve come back to it in recent years and have totally changed my view on it. I think in a 1980s power ballad sort of way it rather encapsulates a certain raw passion that you might expect from Mediterranean culture. I kind of love her voice and performance in particular. I don’t know why but it’s really grown on me. Maybe I just have no taste! Although you can’t dispute that ‘Non ho l’età’ was one of the best Eurovision songs of all time - so pure and simple and beautiful.
My personal opinion is that Italy & Austria's return in 2011 was influenced by Germany winning in 2010. I think a lot of people thought only Scandinavia. Ex Ussr. Greece & Turkey had a chance. Since their return, both countries have been successful
Hi Matt, you're right that songs from '65 to '73 have a similar, outdated (for their time) melody and pattern but, just let me say, Massimo Ranieri is probably one of the best, if not the best, italian male vocalist of the last 50 years. Too bad he participated at ESC without his best songs, "Se bruciasse la citta' " or "Vent'anni". He could also be at the ESC in 1988, instead of the lacklustre Luca Barbarossa, where he could sing another gem like "Perdere l'amore". Gigliola Cinquetti in 1974 was a gorgeous woman and her "Si" was simply a mesmerizing song. Mia Martini was one of the most powerful voices of '80s and early '90s. Too bad she passed away so tragically. Her sister, Loredana Berte', although in her sixties, is enjoying success in italian charts this summer. Al Bano and Romina were primary examples of italian camp music in those years. After a divorce, they recently reunited and are touring again. You don't like Franco Battiato and Alice's " I treni di Tozeur"??? REPENT AND ASK FOR FORGIVENESS!!! :-P After Jalisse, the big leap forward to 2011 is like a travel in time for the relationships between italian music and the rest of Europe. All those years of non-participation completely erased the ESC from our collective memory. As I am used to say to my friends, we jumped from a time of once-a-year, one-night TV-only show without internet fan sites, to an era dominated by social network commentaries, and a big one-week long TV and on-line- stream show. Sometimes I feel we are like martians coming from a different planet...I'm proud for all our entries since our return, even for Emma in 2014, as these showcase the variety and quality of italian music scene and artists. I'm looking forward to the announcements of the artists at next Sanremo Festival. Personally, I'm rooting for women the likes of Malika Ayane, Dolcenera or Giusy Ferreri.
I discovered you by chance and I must say that unlike many topics with great correctness your opinions on the various songs but also intelligently :-) fact (the first vidoe chenho saw was the one on Denmark) I detot I like it as a comment and I find it very smart I subscribe to his channel! congratulations :-)
The intro song remember me "La Dama & El Vagabundo" (I don't know the name in English). My favourites: 1957: Beautiful voice 1958: A song knew for everyone, but I did't know it until Eurovision 1964: For me it's the second best winner ever. I love it 1966: I love this song, more than "Volare" 1969: I like her voice 1971: wow. I love it 2017: I like it 2018: wow. This song is really beautiful I hope to see your reaction of Portugal in ESC.
Al Bano and Romina Power are currently on a farewell tour until the end of the year. They are still very famous in Austria and Germany. Look at the reaction of the crowd in this german-austrian tv show this year: th-cam.com/video/4_YLA8rESJc/w-d-xo.html
The 1969 song reminds me of Let It Be Me by the Everly Brothers, which - I just found out - is actually the English version of a Gilbert Bécaud song called Je t'appartiens, from 1955. Btw, I love Italy in Eurovision. I hope they never leave us again.
Wanna know the funny side? Gianni's Occhi di ragazza rendition at Eurovision was one of the worse ever. And it's one of my favourite songs from him. And Raggio di Luna sounds to me as one of the worse Matia Bazar productions. About Battiato & Alice, don't worry, we can forgive you after all :D Ruggeri still ROCKS nowadays. Believe me. 90% of Italian guys of today can't even come close to him. Marco won me that night as well. From that night on I started to get even more interested into his works.
1984, 1987, 1997, 2012, 2015, 2016 & 2017 are the best entries from Italy. Why oh why did they leave the Eurovision after 1997??! Hope to see them win fairly soon.
I honestly agree, Italy has a very "operatic" tradition, I find it pretty boring too, but has in my opinion redeemed itself lately. You're going to love this year entry.
Let me tell you that the Gigliola Cinquetti's song "Si" was actually not supposed to be broadcasted in Italy, because of her saying "Yes" controversially (Some of them don't think about it) but it actually turns out that the Italian broadcaster actually refused to broadcast the song because of the song being foreshadowed by the "1974 Italian Referendum on Divorce" and which it also coincided with the contest, Which that the referendum was held a month later in May that year.
oddly enough; the song was played on German radio back thenin german and was very popular. I did not know as a Kid listening to that song, that it was Eurovision.. Oddly back then even a 2nd or 3rd place meant you had a hit record that was not forgotten after the show..
I might be a bit biased because I really like her music but I think Francesca Michielin deserved more than 16th place. At least top 10. It's a great song with a great message and it did not do that well because she came after the incredible performance of il Volo
If you can at least understand a bit of the language, even the songs that sound alike have real emotional and deep meaning. I loved the oldies to bits!
I defenately agree with you on Il Divo! but please listen carefuly to those beautiful old italian songs that came from the golden days of San Remo still afer 50 years or so they are like sparkling diamods forever to make us romantic
Italy often has many chances to win. For example at esc 2019 came second but there were many people singing Soldi and so I thought that my state could win for once but according to cause that we Italians lose in the last few years and that we do not receive votes from the north Europe. If you notice, they have won Austria , Sweden twice, Denamerck ecc but not time Italy why? Since you say that our music is very beautiful and why don't we win? In 2019 in the juri's vote e received votes only from six southern European states that in the jury that voted for us is Belgium but I ask for explanations why don't you vote for us? And above all I ask the state that border Italy because they did not vote for us, in my opinion this esc is unfair since we give very beautiful songs that you often sing but I ask if we Italians can once exult for victory but we lose for just as little as last arcade year I know it's beautiful but Soldi in my opinion could win since for me that song is the most beautiful that I heard and the spectators sang togeder with Mahmood and because even this time we didn't win, now under this message I want explanations in Italian, if you don't know, use Google translator 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
nooooooo I cannot believe you do not like Battiato Alice :) I think they are divine. Please try to hear other songs by Battiato. I really think he is the greatest living singer in Italy. Anyway I appreciate your videos
I am Italian and I would like to show you the text translated into English of the song by Ermel Meta and Fabrizio Moro (the one of 2018) In Cairo they do not know what time it is now The sun on the Rambla today is not the same In France there is a concert, people have fun Someone sings loudly, someone shouts, "to death" It always rains in London but today it does not hurt The sky does not even discount a funeral In Nice, the sea is red with fires and shame People on the asphalt and blood in the sewer And this huge body we call Earth Wounded in his organs from Asia to England Galaxies of people dispersed in space But the most important is the space of a hug Of mothers without children, of children without fathers Of faces illuminated like walls without paintings Minutes of silence broken by a voice You did not do anything to me You did not do anything to me You have not taken anything from me This is my life that goes on Over all, besides people You did not do anything to me You did not have anything Because everything goes beyond your useless wars There are those who make the cross, those who pray on the carpets The churches and the mosques, the imams and all the priests Separate entrances of the same house Billions of people hoping for something Arms without hands, faces without names Let's trade the skin, after all we are human Because our life is not a point of view And there is no pacifist bomb You did not do anything to me You have not taken anything from me This is my life that goes on Over all, besides people You did not do anything to me You did not have anything Because everything goes beyond your useless wars Your useless wars The skyscrapers, the subways, will fall Contrasting walls raised for bread But against all terror that hinders the journey The world rises with the smile of a child With the smile of a child With the smile of a child You did not do anything to me You did not have anything Because everything goes beyond your useless wars You did not do anything to me Your useless wars You have not taken anything from me Your useless wars You did not do anything to me Your useless wars You did not have anything Your useless wars I am aware that everything no longer comes back Happiness flew How a bubble flies away
Italy always sends quality and never forgets it culture (Always singing in Italian).

"Non ho l'età" is heartbreaking still today
Italy 2018 is a meaningful song. Metamoro is a wonderful singing duo.

I like all our songs except 1978,1979,1980😍😍😍
IL volo was REALLY GOOD BUt Meta and Moro are the best- I love them and the text is amazing.
LOVE these
I have loved Italy’s songs from 2011 to 2017. Yes, Grand Amore should have won. Those juries are terrible & should be dumped.

I hope to see your reaction of Portugal in ESC.
Al Bano and Romina Power are currently on a farewell tour until the end of the year.
They are still very famous in Austria and Germany. Look at the reaction of the crowd in this german-austrian tv show this year:

You should make a winners ranked video, I would love to see your opinion
OMG, I don't know if I could. How could I choose only one No 1?!?
I mean my favorite is definitely in your eyes (being Irish-Italian American) but I would love to see your ranking!
Volare, volare! The best ESC song of all timeee! World classic, how it didn't win is just incredible. I also love Nina Zilli, big fan of Italy 2012.
About Battiato & Alice, don't worry, we can forgive you after all :D
Ruggeri still ROCKS nowadays.
I Love 1958-1960, 1964-1965, 1970-1971, 1973, 1976-1980, 1983-1985, 1987, 1990, 1992, 2012
The 1969th entry resembles a bit to "I'll be there" by Jackson 5, maybe this is what you meant?
I honestly agree, Italy has a very "operatic" tradition, I find it pretty boring too, but has in my opinion redeemed itself lately. You're going to love this year entry.
Fiumi di parole still the best ❤️
Peppino had no personality?? Whaaaat, his body language is one of several reasons why I love Come eddoce o mare
Sorry matey but your dismissal of the entries from the 70s was way off. Major stars of the time bringing some real classics to the stage
italians know volare even if they're 4 years old 😂
Italy 1964,1983, 1984,1990,2015
i love your movies about grand prix
Can you do Finland?
If you can at least understand a bit of the language, even the songs that sound alike have real emotional and deep meaning. I loved the oldies to bits!
I defenately agree with you on Il Divo! but please listen carefuly to those beautiful old italian songs that came from the golden days of San Remo still afer 50 years or so they are like sparkling diamods forever to make us romantic
Hi can we have Netherlands soon im enjoying these vids esp the countrys that have been it from early on so we see all the decades .

Il Volvo was my winner for 2015 too 🇮🇹

@ESCunited can you make the same video with the netherlands cause they are my favourite eurovision country
Yes, it's coming soon.
It would have been easier to judge if your voice wasn't 10 times louder than the song clips you played. I am rooting for Il Volo for 2019!
Gigliola Cinguetti 💟Si 😘italia
I hope that Francesco Gabbani will return to the contest again soon!!
What a pity you don't follow Sanremo. So many great songs there.
My favorite ESC country
Please do Finland
Have you ever consider to react for the Sanremo winners? Here is the recap video: th-cam.com/video/sWLNqVCmhTA/w-d-xo.html
Finland or Iceland next please
The government and Kan agreed that the Eurovision budget would be around 40 miliion dollar!!!!!!
Since the return they are the best country by far (curiously Grande amore is my least fave of that bunch)
I'll volo was my winner.
nooooooo I cannot believe you do not like Battiato Alice :) I think they are divine. Please try to hear other songs by Battiato. I really think he is the greatest living singer in Italy. Anyway I appreciate your videos
Can you watch TURKEY because of their absence in the contest
Grande Amore the best
What???? You don't like the 1984 Italy and you have forgotten all about Italy 1987, their best ever entry? Whattttt?
Can you do Ireland next
Grande amore 😍😍😍😍😢😢😢😢😢😤😤😤
Please do Luxembourg or Monaco
I am Italian and I would like to show you the text translated into English of the song by Ermel Meta and Fabrizio Moro (the one of 2018) In Cairo they do not know what time it is now
The sun on the Rambla today is not the same
In France there is a concert, people have fun
Someone sings loudly, someone shouts, "to death"
It always rains in London but today it does not hurt
The sky does not even discount a funeral
In Nice, the sea is red with fires and shame
People on the asphalt and blood in the sewer
And this huge body we call Earth
Wounded in his organs from Asia to England
Galaxies of people dispersed in space
But the most important is the space of a hug
Of mothers without children, of children without fathers
Of faces illuminated like walls without paintings
Minutes of silence broken by a voice
You did not do anything to me
You did not do anything to me
You have not taken anything from me
This is my life that goes on
Over all, besides people
You did not do anything to me
You did not have anything
Because everything goes beyond your useless wars
There are those who make the cross, those who pray on the carpets
The churches and the mosques, the imams and all the priests
Separate entrances of the same house
Billions of people hoping for something
Arms without hands, faces without names
Let's trade the skin, after all we are human
Because our life is not a point of view
And there is no pacifist bomb
You did not do anything to me
You have not taken anything from me
This is my life that goes on
Over all, besides people
You did not do anything to me
You did not have anything
Because everything goes beyond your useless wars
Your useless wars
The skyscrapers, the subways, will fall
Contrasting walls raised for bread
But against all terror that hinders the journey
The world rises with the smile of a child
With the smile of a child
With the smile of a child
You did not do anything to me
You did not have anything
Because everything goes beyond your useless wars
You did not do anything to me
Your useless wars
You have not taken anything from me
Your useless wars
You did not do anything to me
Your useless wars
You did not have anything
Your useless wars
I am aware that everything no longer comes back
Happiness flew
How a bubble flies away
1984??? I treni de tozeur is classic, magic oh magic 1985 and 1989 was completely ruined in live. :( Listen Avrei voluto studio version, just great!
