GOOD THINKING , I tested the fire dragon with alcohol, thinking there would be no leaking alcohol, YIKES I was wrong. You gave me the solution and I have carbon felt. BEST
You may want to drop two burners in it as it will help if you intend to boil larger amounts of water. Good luck with the trip and let us know how it went.
I converted the BCB stove into a burner stand by folding the inter wings down as flat as I could get them. Insert an Evernew Titanium burner with cross bars, BCB wind screen, fold down the BCB stove legs, and G2G. Works great for canteen cups
Sounds a bit like what 'infoshed explore' did th-cam.com/video/pGZE-h5DM_A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LZF_Sg2ZYFWtCgsw The BCB is a good basis for experimenting. Thanks for the comment and I'm sure it will prove of use.
Nice stove and good video. The different parts pack well inside each other👍. Making camping stoves is fun. I once made a modification of the Esbit stove. It works with a Trangia gas burner, an alcohol burner and can also burn wood. It might also work with a Trangia alcohol gel burner or a multi fuel burner, but I don't have them.
The carbon felt acts as a wick. Ot shrinks after a few burns but doesn't need to be replaced. Any non flammable material can be used. Glass fibre loft insulation was popular some time ago but I have never tried it. Hope that helps.
If you have alcohol in a container WITHOUT some sort of wick the alcohol will boil and spit small drops out of the container which will cause the whole thing to overheat and erupt into a fireball. A wick of any type prevents this from happening.
Yes the other bottle holds fuel. About 20ml. The bottles probably came from one of those airport travel kits for take on liquids. I can't be sure as I have a box full of small bottles that I have collected over the years in the hope that they would be useful. Thanks for commenting
You would need to seal the gaps in the tray as it's just folded. A better approach in MHO would be to form a tray out of heavy guage aluminium foil then fill it with carbon felt. Doing this would work but the stove would be "hot." Too hot for my needs but ok for boiling large quantities of water, half litre, quite quickly. I'm quite happy with smaller stoves that have low heat output but that's just me. Others may have priorities.
If you search eBay with "300ML Folding Camping Kettle Outdoor Kettle Coffee Pot Portable Lightweight" you will find it or one like it. Costs about £10. I'd post a link but TH-cam usually deletes comments with links. I wrapped the handle with parcel string which worked well however the spout suffers from the same problem as every other hiking kettle. The spout projects into the main body forming a ridge that traps some of the water which makes completely emptying it awkward to say the least. Best part is that it fits inside the small trangia mess tin. Thanks for watching.
That's pretty handy,I was thinking of modifying my bcb stove by putting stove rope in the square resovoir that the gel goes in,but maybe it would be too much fuel wasting and could be dangerous, your idea seems very solid 👍
Yes. This stove is initially designed to use the fire cubes. Be careful when using them as the stove is constructed by folding and can leak melted fire cube through the gaps which can be a problem. I can't always get the fire dragon cubes as easily as methylated spirit so I added an alcohol burner and enough alcohol to boil close on a litre of water in the same package. I have nothing against the fire gel. I just find alcohol to be more convenient. Hope that answers your question.
I got it from Ebay. The title was... "Folding Camping Kettle Outdoor Kettle Coffee Pot Portable for Backpacking" The description... "MATERIAL: This Outdoor Kettle made of aluminum alloy material, fast heating, strong and durable. 200ML CAPACITY: 200ml Camping Kettle, convenient and practical. Perfect for coffee, tea, etc. FOLDABLE: The kettle comes with non slip handle, easy to use and carry. OUTDOOR CAMPING KETTLE: Efficient heat conduction, uniform heating. APPLICATION: The Tea Pot suitable for outdoor, Camping, Hiking, Picnic, Travel, etc. Size Chart: 15.6cmx8.7cmx5.8cm/6.14inx3.43inx2.28in" I hope that helps
It's too hot with the gel blocks. Ok for it's intended purpose of boiling water for a brew or heating a retort pouch. Meths is cheaper than the intended gel fuel
@@EpicureanHikers It's ridiculously inefficient and when I tried using it with BCB fire dragon I actually nearly burnt my hands off trying to pick my own BCB mug up off it. 😅 yeah its got some issues 🤔 its never good if you have to mod it to use it🤣👍

It should come with a warning ⚠️
Stay safe
Thats the first intelligent mod I've ever seen on an esbit
Thanks. That's made me blush 😊
I tried regular aluminum foil and lined the FireDragon BCB put in a piece of Carbon Felt, poured in alcohol, works good, No leaking. Thanks Again EH
You are welcome
Great idea. Thank you. I hope to pinch exactly that for a one week hike on the Robert Louis Stevenson trail in central France, very soon…

Thank you for your comment. It's always fun to use something you have made yourself and the trangia burner is a classic for good reason.
Good video, I use fire rope in the middle space. Same job. Enjoy
Fire rope is probably better as it doesn't shrink like carbon felt does.
Thanks for taking the time to comment
Nice! I just cut carbon felt and put it in the rectangle well.
That would work. Nothing wrong with just filling the tray with felt.
Thanks foe taking the time to comment
Very cool kit. I’m going to make one. Thanks 😊
Let us know how you get on with it.
Thanks for watching
I first made it as a backup stove but use it exclusively for day and weekend hikes.
Cracking conversion. love it Thanks

Maybe a stupid question but what does the carbon felt do?
And does that need to be replaced after x amount of uses?

Obviously enjoying your videos. What was in the empty container, just for extra fuel? Cheers Stu

Out of curiosity, would this work by just lining the tray with carbon felt?

Crazy good!
By the by, who makes the kettle?

but don't fire dragon sell the gel cubes that fit that?
Yes. This stove is initially designed to use the fire cubes. Be careful when using them as the stove is constructed by folding and can leak melted fire cube through the gaps which can be a problem.

😎👍
Thanks. ☺️
The only reason why this thing needs to be converted is because it doesn't work properly with its own fuel.😂
It's too hot with the gel blocks. Ok for it's intended purpose of boiling water for a brew or heating a retort pouch. Meths is cheaper than the intended gel fuel
