Mayonaise cake is a result of the Great Depression when eggs and oil were harder to come by, or needed to be saved for other meals.

    • @gojewla
      @gojewla 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Stephanie Florence no, depression is the result of a mayonnaise cake.

I believe that! Never had it, would try it, but probably won't make it unless absolutely necessary. I'd rather have no cake.

Two cups of mayonnaise is still a truck-ton of a relatively expensive ingredient. From what I can see, the actual Depression-era versions of this idea used a lot less mayo - 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup, not 2 cups.

I’ve been making mayonnaise cake as my go-to chocolate cake for 20 years at least. It always turns out great! It’s so moist and flavorful. (I do not like the raw batter though, I can taste the mayo) I usually frost it with coconut pecan frosting but have used chocolate, cream cheese, powdered sugar. Everybody loves this cake! I’m not so sure about your mayonnaise glaze. Top it with real frosting !

Excellent cake! So moist and rich! I like the coffee addition. My mother would often do the same. We being in 2020, any body over 30 who's got a Grandma, she would have come up in the 60s/ 70s. Not exactly pioneer stock. And got their cake mixes from a box. My Grandma 1903-97 was a depression mother. We had a real "icebox " until after WW2. Mayonnaise was stored under the kitchen sink because it was dark and cool 🤮🦠! Wanna a hunk of mayo cake now?still a great recipe 🍧🎂

My dark chocolate mayo cake has always been a HUGE hit for many, many years. There was one time I made one for a church dinner and there wasn't any left after about 5 minutes. So I was asked if I could make 2 of them . They were gone in mere minutes lol. I make mine in layer cake form with a basic American frosting of powdered sugar, shortening milk and vanilla. So its kind of like an Oreo in cake form. tfs 🎃🍁🍃🍂🌞🌵🍁🍂🍃🎃🍁🍃🍂🌞🌵🍁🍂🍃🎃🍁🍃🍂🌞🌵🍁🍂🍃🎃🍁🍃🍂🌞🌵🍁🍂🍃🎃🍁🍃🍂🌞🌵🍁🍂🍃🎃🍁🍃🍂🌞🌵🍁🍂🍃

My mom loves peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. Usually with red onions. I was never down for that nastiness. She’s a depression era baby. I can explain away her madness with that excuse. My husband’s mom made mayonnaise cake for every birthday because it’s his favorite. I’ve never actually made it because she has Alzheimer’s and can’t remember the recipe, but I’m gonna give this recipe a try and see if it gives him all the feels. Thank you! 😊

Long story short, I once ran out of both peanut butter and miracle whip and ended up making a jelly and ham sandwich. It sounds really weird, but the sweet jelly to salty Ham ratio actually made it taste good.

I don’t know if this is weird but I used to eat caviar (fish eggs) straight out of the can with a spoon when I was really little. And I had a weird thing for like 2 weeks where I’d put salt on my bananas. I used to really like salt back then I guess... and now my go-to snack is plain white bread with literally nothing on it. Mayo cake is the first cake I learned to make and I love it!

I used to make cheese and mayo sandwiches when I was younger, like American cheese and Japanese mayo then I’d toast it so the cheese melts and the bread becomes crispy. Best darn thing ever, haven’t eaten it in 10 years tho so can’t be sure if it’s still as good as I thought

My grandma made mayonnaise cake when I was young. I haven't had it in a couple of decades, but I remember it tasting just like a normal cake. I don't like mayonnaise at all, but it's fine in a cake.

Fun video. I make my own mayonnaise & it is pretty darn good. As a kid, weird thing I ate was raw peeled cucumber slices, each topped with a dollop of ketchup. Yummy!

I haven’t made it in a few years, but I have grown up eating mayonnaise chocolate cake. It was always the go to cake that my family would have for birthdays and it is good! I want to make it again with some of your modifications, like with the espresso coffee. That would be a great surprise for my family!
Edit: my weird food as a kid was a mayo sandwich. Just mayo between two pieces bread.

I LOVE that every time he goes into his southern voice, he names Randy and only Randy. Hahahahah.

White bread, miracle whip, and sliced banana sandwich. The tangy miracle whip reacts with the sweetness in the banana!

I had a teacher before that loves to mix sweet garlic chili sauce and halo-halo (a cold filipino dessert) 😵. Anyway, HELLO JOSH FROM THE PHILIPPINES! i had watched all your videos in man about cake! I look forward in your next baking! 🙆‍♀️💕

I have a couple things: syrup on scrambled eggs, raw flavored instant oatmeal in cool water, and ,the best, dipping cinnamon buns in chili. Yum!

I make this cake but instead of water use cold brew coffee and I use dark cocoa powder, it's one of our favorite cakes.
