This is one thing I love about German war films. Nearly every US war film has shown ALL Nazis to be evil, ruthless murderers with no sense of concious or humanity but German war films show that not all Nazi soldiers were evil, they were actual human beings, some of whom were haunted by the acts they had been forced to commit or be murdered by your peers for cowardice.

It's really sweet how the two most hardened soldiers (Fritz and Rollo) look after G.G., I reckon Fritz must have a younger brother back home who's similar to G.G., just as Rollo has a son who's similar to him. Plus you gotta give G.G. credit, even though he's still quite green, he's proactive, volunteering to go out with the Lieutenant and Fritz even though he's not got the experience to be undertaking such a task at this stage.

It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but basically in the beginning one of the German soldiers shoots at the Soviets when he was ordered to hold his fire. Then they yell to the Russians that they want a temporary cease fire so they can retrieve their wounded and the dog tags off their dead. The rest pretty much needs no translation. And it's a good war film with an excellent ending.

It is an elite unit full of veterans, which also means that some of the soldiers are older. There are also younger ones, which is related to the fact that the battalion was incorporated into another pioneer unit from the 6th army. Everything makes perfect sense.

the German dog tags were (and still are) an oval metal plate with two chains. You can break them in the middle. You wear them, on the long chain, around your neck. This half remains with the fallen soldier. The side with the short chain is to take away.

@roykuo4 There were indeed hate from each side towards the other but sometimes your comrads are more important than fighting each other + most of the soldiers were just following orders not really avenging for the motherland or the fatherland.
