My first 5 tries with corn grew me ONE ear per stalk, some good, some not so much. The BEST so far, just this last Summer, has been Burpee's "Container Corn." They were only supposed to grow four foot, but grew over seven foot! They had from 2 to 4 ears each stalk, and were the best and sweetest tasting! I grew them in Walmart bags, 5 seeds per bag, then stuck the bags in kiddie pools that I'd put about an inch of water in whenever the corn looked a little "saggy." Hope that helped someone!
Cool video, great to see success growing corn in 5 gal buckets! 2 ears per plant is great! 2 is the normal yield. Every once in a while, if conditions are perfect, ya might get 3 ears per plant. If things don't go well, zero or one ears per plant. 2 is the normal successful yield per plant. Happy gardening
Yo dude, corn plants fruit through cross pollination so 4 plants will work if you are constantly making out with your plants but the more the better and try to not make it a monocrop as they will suck your soil dry. Your corn will do better if you put them in full sun. Space your corn seeds 8-12 inches apart in blocks so that they are as close as possible for pollination or space them 2 by 4 ft if you plant pole bean seeds next to them to run up the stalks and to reserve nitrogen in the soil...
That was the most violent root check I ever seen lol
Waving a hand from California, and in the most complimentary way possible, I must express my extreme jealousy of your backyard, chickens and garden. My balcony, although bountiful, is nothing compared to your back yard. Good vid, thanks for posting.
My favorite part of this video is the hens softly clucking near the microphone
That was a great video. Thank you! I'm planting in bigger containers about four plants
per container and your video just told all I needed to know! Thank you! PS Loved Pot Pie
Pot Pie??? You named your chicken Pot Pie???? ROFL!!!! Great video, thx for sharing, I'm trying it for the 1st time this year, trying a few different approaches.
Most corn only averages 1 to 2 ears per stalk, economics wise I can buy it cheaper at the local farmers market than I can grow it, but if you put some air pruning holes in those 5 gallon buckets, line with landscape fabric before putting soil in and feed with composte tea, you might get more.
Hey Bella5859 I know its been a long time but can you explain what you just said?
U can help pollinate it also by taking the toss and shaking them onto a paper plate or something and then blowing it down on the stalks where the ears are going to try and form.
Thank you for sharing the video and thank you for the word! God bless you brother!
love the chickens in the yard , wish I had some
I love that scripture when I am gardening. I love gardening with God.
Thx this helped alot with my science experiment
Me too. The chickens were so adorable.
I believe that removal of the peripheral suckers will boost center stalk height by 100%.
Wow thats a nice bunch of roots
With sweet corn you can expect 1 or 2 ears per stalk.
fantastic !!!!! just regular soil ? need any special lime, fertilizer ?
Tinkering with containers on my roof, considered buckets- pretty much using whatever I find out on trash day as I am lacking in buckets.
Please let us know with an update on how they tasted with regard to sugars/starchyness. I am going to be purchasing this variety for my first time growing them in an EarthBox as they do very well in them. Very nice farm, love the hens lol
I can't say for certain, but I have been told all plants need drainage. A few holes certainly won't hurt it.
Mantap..salam kenal dan salam berkebun..
That's pretty good. Mine are in 4 Gallon pots, The roots are a little different and thicker than yours were though.. they're poking out the bottom so I think I'll try to swiftly move all 9 to bigger pots.
LOVE the scripture at the end, Brother!
As the grand solar minimum intensifies, its wise to practice growing your own food in as little space to get higher yields. If you grow fewer varieties and trade with neighbors or a variety for your family, learn now before you have to pay high prices. Even growing a little food will help you save money
Nice chickens!!
Ty👍
you get one to two ears per plant. how much fert. did you use.
Did you drill holes on the bottom of the buckets or did you leave them solid? I would like to try this, but I wasn't sure if they need the drainage or not. Also can I do just 1 plant per 5 gal bucket or do they need to have a male and female together?
2 ears per plant is all that you can expect even in the best conditions. Corn is a very heavy feeder and must be fertilized well. I do not grow corn on the same soil more than once in 5 years. Also suckers should be cut off immediately as soon as you notice them as they will not produce fruit.
how much did you water or when? did you cut holes in the bottom for drainage?
thanks
May I suggest you use wider containers and grow in a circular pattern. I seen this done at a local strawberry farm in California, that school kids visit. They used the wide containers to line the entrance to the farm store
Each plant tends to share nutrients. Less plant more food to absorb. Extra feeding for multiple plants.
You need more gardening vids man!
Oh, I just started these exact corn about a couple weeks ago. I was wondering the name. Is Golden a breed and Bantam another breed that get crossed?
nice verse brother
You get 2 to 3 ears per stalk for average yield of corn.
what are the spaces between your corn?
Hi Billy Willy don't know if you'll see this but what type of soil or mix did you use?
I'm trying mine in fabric grow bags...
Increase your grow bag to 15 gallons size with 20” diameter and you can plant 4 safely for maximum growth and corn that needs the nutrients from that one small container to be successful
Typically you get one to two years per plant which two is good.
That is one nosey chicken!
Did the other one have ears on all or did they all get snubbed and only have ears on one stalk
Bisa tumbuh gak di indo..?
How that corns survive with chickens around??
You didn't use enough straight nitrogen. A sprinkle when it's about a foot tall, and probably a cup when it's about 4 feet tall and pour the water on liberally until harvest.
+Jennifer W Not for corn. You must use straight 34.0.0 nitrogen to get enough stalk.
I’m Montagnard indigenous live in North Carolina after I watch you video, I like to plant here in my apt . Do you think it will grow to plant in September?
I would like to know more. 3 stalks correct? Is that 3 seeds on purpose or what? Also did you pollinate them or since they were so close they did it naturally? And what was that white tube you pulled from the bucket? Any special soil blend or anything you added? Lots to learn..please share so I can. Thanks.
This is late, but I share my opinion anyway just in case. In that bucket there was only one seed, or one plant in a 5 gal container. The plant grew 2 more suckers on the sides. Those suckers needed to be removed right at the beginning to save nutrients for the main stalk which would produce ear corns. He let them grew while he should have removed them earlier.
the chickens name made me laugh
if you got 2 you did great
💚 chicken pot pie!
lol he called the chicken "pot pie".
there are some white bugs on mine in the center of the stalk where the leaves grow off, and there are holes in the leafs causing them to fall over because of the holes, what could that be caused from?
I hear Pot Pie talking to you🤣
WOW
the suckers should be cut off early, they will just rob energy from the main plant
inshallah
Didn't even think of giving a thumbs up till at the end I saw the scripture.
Good video overall anyway, thanks for posting.
Hybrids dont have to be GMO.. Hybrids are just a cross between two plants. Can even be a cross between two heirlooms.
2 ears per plant is pretty good. That is exactly what you are supposed to get. I think. I'm no expert gardener.
2 to 4 ears per stalk.
If that intro w/ that text/font was the thumbnail this might get way more clicks, just saying ;). Good info, thanks!
Cut out the suckers to get that extra ear or two per stalk.
Poor chicken wanted you to give it some attention lol
At 6 to 8 weeks hit it with a high nitrogen fertilizer....like chicken poop.
4 dollar bucket 5 dollars in soil 5 dollars in water and nutrients 3 months time. For 3 ears of corn.
if u run some beans up the corn would have got more out of it
ur suppose to cut the suckers off for more corn combs...
Those roots look like they wanted more room 🤦♂️
No offense, but I was thinking about fried chicken and corn on the cob.😁
bro corn only has 1 or 2 ears of corn per stalk you aint getting no more than that
pot pie got some big thighs
Hybrid ? I would stay away from those and anything that is GMO and go Heirloom, Happy gardening.
I have watch loads of videos to further my knowledge. You are the first who has shown me the breakdown of your planting to include the root system and the successes in growing in a 5 gal. bucket. Thank you
