Many theologians take angels and demons seriously. Why? Certainly, most human beings believe in angels and demons. Anecdotal cases are legion. Certainly, such nonphysical beings, in one form or another, populate most of the world’s religions. But angels and demons seem out of place, anachronistic, in our modern world. Is there anything here we should take seriously?

Believing in angels and demons means we haven’t progressed much in over 7000 years!
I would add that our history of endless barbaric wars to this very day is absolute proof of your thesis ;)

None of what you said makes any logical sense. Progress has happened in many different ways in humna civilization. The fact that a minority of humans believe in some biblical definition of angels and demons in no way suggests that humanity has no made progress. That's some kind of backwards logic.

@@pablocosentino2126 I tend to take a phenomenological view of phenomenality; meaning that I'm not quick to divide things up into object/subject and observer/observed. I think the things that our ancestors were attempting to describe with the concept of angels and demons are very much "real" -- but I'm more willing to describe them upon psychological grounds. I don't, however -- think that these notions can be REDUCED to mere psychological explanations; this is where I differ from the ontology of 'the many' today.
Such a material view not only is highly likely to be incomplete; but also renders our world as inhuman and inhospitable.
I think "real" are things that can be perceived by our senses....
There is no prove of angels or demons...
Interestingly that people using DMT talking about some small creatures living there, like gnomes or something, their descriptions are surprisingly consistent. If these are real creatures or some subconscious artifact, doesn't matter, our consciousness is the only reality we know anyway.
DMT is hard to get ...
What we should be doing is running well designed experiments to see if we can communicate with these entitie and get some usable intel or information that enables us to solve our real-world problems and challenges. And if that can be done consistently. then maybe those things are not as imaginary as some would believe.
All in the dream, like our own existence, only a dream. Reality has no concepts, doesn't have forms, has no location and always here at this moment.
I like this interpretation. I myself felt demonic possession two years ago when the winter death-spirit (windigo) tried to enter my body to the point where i cried out: "Go away! Go away!" I knew it was my own mental illness causing it, but it sure seemed like an independent entity was in the room with me. Unconscious projection would explain a lot of weird things people honestly experience, yet still within physical reality without recourse to the full-blown supernatural. 😮

Jesus was a man made myth
Here are two men, conditioned to only think about phenomenon in a material sense, discussing whether immaterial beings exist or not. These concepts are far too abstract, far beyond their present ability to comprehend this stuff. If you went to a person with only a high school diploma and attempted to explain theoretical physics, cosmology, advanced calculus, etc., it would go completely over their head. It's not that they are too stupid to understand these concepts, but because they've never been introduced to them before. They also hold very strong biases against anything nonphysical, anything non material. We see evidence of unexplained phenomenon all of the time. These things do exist, we just don't know what they are. We haven't yet been able to study them in a controlled setting. The concept of a multiverse is not testable, it can not be tested or observed, yet, many scientists appear to have a fetish for it. Therefore, belief in the multiverse is akin to belief in angels and demons. It might not be "scientific" to believe in angels and demons, but that doesn't stop reasonable people from believing in them any way.

It appears inevitable that in the future we will through evolution or technological development transcend the ordinary dimensions of space and time. It seems obvious then that " guardian angels " are merely our future selves affecting their own past.

Angels and demons are symbolic characters in the dramas we create about our own desires and fears. Children can relate to personalities more readily than the can to abstract concepts, but with maturity they can see what lies behind the metaphor. Good and evil spirits are real because the human mind is real. Likewise, Mickey Mouse is real-- but he's a real cartoon, not a real mouse.

So here’s a thought. If the neurons are alive and activating in response to stimuli then maybe all the patterns we think of, we share the neurons with them so the thoughts can go out of control unless we process or let them go. Like if we don’t process then we keep bringing back the big pattern and those could be like multiple personalities and such. Infinite patterns but not processing will bring back up the whole thing. Maybe that’s why we gotta process things before refilling our cup.

I googled it. This is what i found. The term 'azobenzene' or simply 'azo' is often used to refer to a wide class of similar compounds. These azo compounds are considered as derivatives of diazene (diimide), and are sometimes referred to as 'diazenes'. It's knowledge. What it has to do with angels and demons i don't know.

Unfortunately the authors have scrubbed the clinical usage from the definition. It's an MAOI used in combination with DMT during psychedelic drug trips. Do materialists in science have a principle, like a Popper's Principle, for moral decision making when it comes to experimentation? Can it override government mandates?
The relationship between science and government in different countries could be compared to malevolent or benevolent beings.
It would be interesting to discuss how much the pursuit of science is guided by moral consideration and not national security. It would be interesting to characterize the angels and demons of scientific progress and threats.

Do they exist in the way that religions have typically thought of them? Probably not. Do they exist in some other sense? I find it highly unlikely that we would have developed such beliefs if there wasn't a kernel of truth to them (and/or serving a functional purpose).
I think unconscious drives and strong passions which exert power over volitions have been forces humans have tried to name and understand, often construeing them as how they appear to us -- conscious spirits or godlike influences. There could be something more to them but at this point the weight of the evidence is not there.

@@The_Great_Beyond I think that's an aspect, sure. At a deeper level though, why is duality seemingly an inherent property of every structure within reality? Why do we divide the world into object and subject -- the observed and the observer? Why does it take an electron and a proton for atoms to form? Why is chirality observed throughout nature?

I think you make a pretty good point. I would put ghosts/spirits in the same category. I actually dismissed all of this kind of stuff as BS for years until I actually watched a physical item float slowly down a hallway about 10 feet then drop to the ground (it was a Halloween decoration that was pinned up on my housemates door, it was hard plastic and relatively heavy unlike a paper item that may have appeared to float). Now I don't know what caused that but my housemate saw it as well and it freaked us out. Was it a spirit or a demon? Probably not. But it was something, and what that is I have no clue.

I can create my own interpretation based on the original Greek word for " ANGEL." As simply as possible it means MESSENGER . . . no more and no less. And i add that absolutely everything that exists can carry a message. Whether it's carried explicitly. Or if we READ OUR OWN THOUGHTS and INTERPRETATIONS INTO whatever happens. It's all " ANGELIC. " Or if you wish " DEMONIC. " Semantics is king in this case. The ancients did no more than we do today. They used their limited knowledge (as we today use our limited knowledge) to describe natural events that for lack of better words are difficult to put into simple concepts. Bada - bing. The ability to resist the cookie doesn't make any sense in the world we adapted for. We'd raid a beehive occasionally, otherwise we'd eat fruit that comes with fibre that uses up energy to process (along with all the other plants) and might not be that sweet. So, the instinct to eat it overwhelms us. I think 'supernatural experiences' are impossible to convey to anyone else, but can have circumstancial qualities impossible to dismiss for those who experience them.

The multiverse hypotheses (and there are more than one) are based on logical speculation derived from observations of our own universe. Spirits and demons are merely characters in the psychogical dramas we create about our own desires and fears. You can't equate the two. No one is clinging to "faith" in the multiverse, it's merely a scientific possibility that requires further study, unlike occult beliefs.

It is the religious mind that demands certainty, even a false certainty based on wishful thinking rather than evidence. The evidence for a multiverse is found in the conditions in this one, which implies it is a unit in a larger array that extends beyond our horizon of direct observation. . There is no evidence that personalities exist in disembodied form, but plenty of evidence that spirits represent symbolic characters in the dramas that people create about their own desires and fears. Scientists are motivated by honest curiosity, they follow the evidence wherever it leads and are as ready to disprove a hypothesis as to prove it. The superstitious come to their conclusions first and only then search for arguments to support them, resorting to the sophistry of a lawyer or politician. Cult leaders try to wheedle their way into your mind by getting you to question reality itself, creating a false equivalence between any and all beliefs.to advance their own agendas. The burden of proof is on the one making the claim, not the skeptic. Science invites skepticism, it doesn't play mind games. The superstitious, too lazy and disorganized to employ the scientific method, only look for a fantasy that makes them feel good and then defend it against all reason.

It's perfectly normal for a movie to evoke an emotional response. Plenty of adults get "creeped out" by things. I know of two different grown men who refuse to watch the movie "Event Horizon" because it creeps them out so much. Personally, I like that movie, but I refuse to watch any of the Saw movies or anything extremely gory. Of course I know it's fake but it is still gross 😂

@@t.j.payeur5331Typically it's the low IQ people that fein intelligence to a degree of arrogance. Genuinely intelligent people don't have a need to do as such. I may not be a hard believer in the supernatural, but I am always open to intelligent discussion on the topic. There is definitely things going on we can't explain. Claims of the supernatural were the answer to the unexplained traditionally (a "god of the gaps", if you will). What is most intriguing is that whatever force may actually be causing these strange phenomena may very well prove someday to have a scientific answer, but may also be more strange than anything supernatural we could concoct.

Dean is obviously brilliant and entertaining to listen to.. It is my opinion only that somewhere along the line, the good Doctor has EXITED the arena of science.. His current ideas sound more like the rough draft of a would-be fantasy novel than credible scientific research.. Immaterial projections, by definition, are not possible to test for, and when someone dies in an old house, information doesn't leak out of them to get STORED the walls.. Wow..
What if there is a method for testing these kinds of claims that has not yet been formulated? The empirical sciences didn't come into fruition until we built the cognitive-conceptual structures capable of creating the current scientific method.

In my humble opinion, one could ignore the current insights of physics and suggest that SOMEDAY the supernatural may become vulnerable to the scientific method of information analysis, BUT in order to become a CREDIBLE theory there MUST be some measure of credible evidence to support it.. No?

@Archeidos-Arcana That's certainly possible what you suggest. But it does make the hypothesis invulnerable to criticism. "It exists but we haven't developed the constructs needed to study it." Of course that doesn't mean it can't exist but you can nearly say that about anything.

Physics is inherently intertwined with philosophy, because physics like all science; is ultimately interpreted through our logico-conceptual structures. My challenge is not to physics; it is to a philosophical components within the common interpretation of physics.

Whether Angels or Demons exist, it is not for us to know the truth but TO BELIEVE. I believe it is Heaven that exists where angels dwell whom many had fallen to end in hell and who are now being labelled as demons, devils, lost souls, etc.,

We left the truth about Heaven a long time ago in favor of a lie that ended us all in a state of cold dark emptiness (hell), and now we are totally lost not anymore knowing the truth...
This was how this happened : We all were once in Heaven (our Original Home) with our loving God as the whole truth and nothing but the truth... but then we started "BELIEVING WITHOUT KNOWING" that we can be as powerful as God if we can find the knowledge that God forbids..
..we left Heaven to search for this forbidden knowledge despite God's plea and warning that there is only EMPTINESS and SUFFERING beyond Heaven...We ended in a state of cold dark emptiness instead, as God had warned. We created our own hell, only our free souls to blame because we lost faith in God's love....
.. then we asked God to give us a chance to return Home, this is why we are in this temporary reality on this physical world for a chance to return Home through regaining our faith in a loving God so to override our prior bad choice of losing faith...If we fail, our prior bad choice will remain in effect and our lost souls will return to hell because God always respects our free choice.
...in other words, we are all demons who were once angels dwelling in Heavem..
.. and, by the way, If we were able to freely choose to "BELIEVE WITHOUT KNOWING" while we were in Heaven that ended our souls in hell, we are also able to believe without knowing God, here on earth so for us to return Home. It is just a matter of choice because your soul is free - the same freedom you applied when you left God in Heaven for greed..
...for Godless people who continue to scream that they can never believe without knowing, you already did that when you were in Heaven, that was why your souls ended in hell and now on earth for a chance of salvation through believing without knowing...

No. There are no spirits, no souls, no Gods, no consciousness, no after life all are empty all are invisible all represent survival of biological life. Soul, spirit, consciousness, God the after life are postulations of survival soul or spirit within the structure, like wise consciousness ,God representing the immortal soul or spirit of survival the after life representing survival extension or continuation in death and soul is required. However they all have one thing in common which survival does not which is I can see and measure survival within biological life where soul, spirit, consciousness, God the after life cannot be seen or measured and there is no correlation with material substance which can be observed but in survival it can bee clearly seen to be true and real. The others are empty, fallacious, postulations of survival, invisible, incoherent, and are circular in linguistics terms or you can never know the answer with proof. Soul ,spirit, consciousness, God the after life all share this same problem or issue so the language is false or incorrect. Survival has the advantage which is it can be seen, measured, and it also is a force of nature or within biological life for it to be seen it needs the material to exist because life has a survival disposition which is inherent. There is no confusion. Individuals create the problems for others or other material objects.
Survival is the answer .Soul or spirit or consciousness are Religious terms like God or the after life .Do not be fooled. All are empty ,invisible, hollow, lack correlation with material in definition or no physical match in behaviour, all are survival oriented, all cannot be seen, cannot be measured, have no linguistical match with physical, are from 500 Years ago, lack historical postulations of the after life with earlier biological life 'Behaviour' or 'Availability 'of after life, humans evolved later in time scales so would be later additions to the after life [eternal], Survival and behaviour problem with availability of after life based on historical bio life's ability to survive measured against survival, hence the need to discredit evolution and survival itself while postulating survival, Dinosouls and biosouls would already be waiting for you unless they don't have souls for some reason. Now why would that be considering they were here millions of years before humans existed and the after life is eternal?
