What was everyone’s favorite loop? I think I’m going to have to go with the Fox 5 Surprise Squad UPDATE: As many of you have stated, at 21:47 I made the mistake of assuming the East German anthem might lead us down an alt-right path while East Germany created it's identity around being anti-fascist. Again at 22:42, the West German president addresses the subject of Neonazis in West Germany, so this video was also against fascism. I apologize for these assumptions and for all of my German history experts, feel free to add more context to this thread. Thank you for all of the constructive feedback!

Love how this guy got 90% of his autoplay content in Obama and Dem congressional hearings, but complains about being recommended a trump video despite how it would never autoplay him one outside of a debate.
That happened to my Spotify algorithm because i literally like almost anything music-wise, so it couldn't figure out what i liked (or didn't like to sprinkle in there to force me to use the 6 skips , but i just wouldn't)
yeah but that's the point. if "meh i can't pin this user down, so alt right content it is!" is the way the algorithm goes, that's... interesting, to say the least.
the end of the horseshoe is pretty thin between communist stuff and nazi stuff, i wouldn't have been surprised to see the horst-wessel-lied or something similar after a few ddr songs
That’s because there are historical music/anthem channels that post both - and there are people who listen to both. The actual political content isn’t like that, at least not for me. TH-cam doesn’t try to alt-right pipeline me anymore, but it occasionally forgets which side of historical conflicts I listen to music from.
"WHY HAVEN'T YOU WATCHED ANYTHING MORE THAN A MINUTE? WHY HAVEN'T YOU PRESSED LIKE OR DISLIKE ON ANY OF THE 3000+ VIDEOS I GAVE YOU? WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!?!?! PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT!!!!!!" - The TH-cam Algo, probably.
The algorithm knew what he was doing after 3 videos. That's why he was shown 4 hour plus content. He could have proven this experiment though at the 4:30 mark where they recommended the richest billionaire in the world recommending trump after only 4 videos or something on autoplay
only a canon event for people who were young enough to get sucked in. i was 19 when gacha life came out, never saw the appeal of them, and gacha videos haunt my youtube recommended feed like the plague because i happen to like anime and fnaf 😔
I’m pretty sure this would only work if you walked away and let it full run the videos. By clicking thru some and not others it influences the algorithm to some degree
Maybe with the really long videos, like the hour long ones, he could at least let it run for 30 seconds or so for TH-cam to at least compute that he watched a bit of it.
Skips through over 400 Obama Ads, then actually watches the one republican interview he gets auto played and the algorithm starts recommending other republicans during House and Senate hearings. Which again he watches instead of skipping immediately (at least enough to find some spicy clips for this video). Never gets auto played a truly "alt-right" content besides these actual real moments in congress (which I would argue isn't alt-right, if they are in congress they are not "alternate" by definition). We know this isn't alt-right because he continues for almost 1000 more videos after that. Then when he never gets to what he sets out to achieve at the start, he claims victory was actually already achieved before and leaves. He also clearly primed the algorithm to be political because he chose the video of the news coverage of the assassination attempt on Trump, which was worldwide news (it is reasonable for it to suggest it regardless of your political view). He also did this during the RNC on purpose to try to bias it toward Republican news more than it normally would. It is intentionally looking for the result you want and setting up the test so that you stack as many chips in your favor. Pausing on a video, watching a handful of seconds more, hovering you mouse over certain videos are tracked analytics that are used during video suggestions. By not watching all videos in full, these things are effecting the results. 432 straight Obama ads isn't polarizing but actual moments from congressional proceedings are "alt-right"? That doesn't really check out. The algorithm never pushed you to the "far/alt-right". Accept the results of your flawed biased experiment instead of changing the goal post to suit your video. The only thing this really showed is that the algorithm favors things you choose to watch. He made 2 video clicks during this, a music video and a Trump news story. He started with a music video and was stuck watching other music videos and songs until he actively tried to change to politics/news coverage. It then basically only stayed on those 2 things, politics and music (or at least kept trying to return to them). For example there was a sports adjacent political news story (Bush throwing the first pitch), then it tried suggesting sports/video games/movies and TV shows/etc. but after a while, it tries to return to music and politics. It does this via the direction of the most music/politics combo imaginable, National Anthems at the Olympics. It even shows what could classified as "far left" political music with actual music from Communist regimes. It eventually switched back to RNC coverage (current political news, remember this was one of his 2 video clicks) and form there went onto 432(!) Obama ads straight via 2 Republican campaign ads. I don't understand how that is pushing someone to the "alt-right".
4:05 TH-cam uses watch time to judge how well a video appealed to the viewer. By skipping, you told TH-cam you weren't so interested in the music video, and so it adjusted to show you different music. If you did this multiple times, you would eventually communicate to the algorithm that you aren't interested in music. Allowing political videos to play out of horror communicates to the algorithm that you want to see more. This introduction of your personal feedback pollutes the experiment, calling the results into question. While I am interested in seeing the answer to the original question, I'm going to have to stop here, as the answer will not be found in this video.
I'm having the same thoughts as you, this video more clearly highlights a big problem in science where people try and fit answers to their data. He has an answer, "If I let TH-cam autoplay long enough it will show me Alt-Right videos" and he is fitting his data to that. He quite literally ignores that it shows him "alt-left" stuff, aka all the communist music (he counts dixie as alt-right). Honestly I just barely finished this video, it's not a good video at all.
@@OCinneide there’s no such thing as “alt-left,” and even if there was, communist anthems are definitely not what it would be. That’s just regular left-wing. Alt-right is a specific genre of far right (although nowadays those two are being conflated more and more, evidenced in this video where he calls the Confederacy alt-right)
As it was pointed out in other of these TH-cam experiments, you're not watching the whole video. You're skipping right to the end. The algorithm recognizes that you're not watching the content in it's totality, and thus tries to recommend you a different topic you might like.
@@aqueuse because that too is part of the algorithm. If someone clicked on something (say a result) or chose autoplay next (instead of going away or choosing something else) a part of the algorithm considers 'they may want something like this but not THIS one'. Like if someone searches for a particular moment in a sports match but gets the match wrong, the algorithm will thrown other matches of the same sport, or another related sport after that. The logic extends for everything so if someone just skipped a video called adam sandler something but havent closed the tab, clicked in a completely different suggestion or anything that would say 'nope' it wonders if you wanted another video about adam sandler. Btw we dont know how smart, dumb or the minute interactions the algorithm takes into account or how often. For example clicking the end of the timeline could make a difference- maybe its someone who wants to check the video suggestion cards or see the grid of sugestions, wich may be different then someone cliking the skip/next button
Thank you. I was worried I might be the only one who noticed that this video proves absolutely nothing about anything. There is 100% an alt right rabbit hole. I fell down that shit. Don’t tell me it wasn’t really there.
@@aqueuse What the other commenter meant. Additionally: The algorithm recognizes some form of engagement. The person conducting the experiment is still actively watching and will not let the video run in the background. That means, to the algorithm, the viewer wants to see something similar yet different. It would be better to let youtube just play on autoplay. It would even be better to let it run through a virtual machine and do some normal google searches beforehand to simulate a normal person. TH-cam is Part of Alphabet and will recognize your search history. That is the reason if you ever searched for anything you will get some related videos recommended to you. I played jedi survivor and searched for a guide on how to finish one speicific side collectible. Now I get flooded with Jedi Survivor Let's Plays.
The idea is pretty interesting, basically where will the algorithm lead us, but the execution is horrible. 1. TH-cam will recognize that you muted content. 2. TH-cam knowns that you skipped through a video (less watchtime/interest) 3. hovering and autoplaying over a video can already count as viewing (I think it depends on time, there is some 3 or so second threshold before it counts as started to watch) If you really want to do this, you would need to set up a blank computer that runs for ages on autoplay and see where it leads you, but it would probably take years, given that TH-cam likes to spam you with 3-12 hour endless videos of music or podcasts (more watchtime, especially when you fall asleep).
I doubt autoplay even is factored in that much, most of the algorithm is based on the sidebar, people don't use autoplay unless its for music or playlists
Someone mentioned shorts. Maybe if you left a computer on autoplay in the shorts tab you'd see quicker results, because you can't skip through the videos but they're only a few minutes long at most. There's also a lot more dumb shit posted there so I'm sure the radicalization would be fast.
Not to mention he even skewed it to start finding political content. And despite that and the Trump shooting just happening it still managed to steer him toward alt-left content praising communism lol
Then he would get stuck at hour long compilations as when you let it just play, longer videos will get viewed longer (because they’re just simply longer) and so the algorithm thinks you want to watch longer videos. But I very much agree this experiment is screwed, whether that is intentional or not.
Well no because then the algorithm would actually work how its meant to. He wanted to see if it leaned to a certain side and it didnt. It just showed to be completely random. He would have got the same result if he watched every video to its entire length.
If he watched right leaning videos to their full length but skipped the left ones of course the algorithm would recommebnd alt right videos. But that wasnt the point of the video thats just how the algo is meant to work
Everything you did affected the outcome: Watch time, watch percentage, pause time, Where your cursor was, if it was moving, whether the page lost focus, how long it lost it for, even hovering your cursor over things in the feed. It all influenced the recommendations.
At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, I'd say that even the things he says while he watches the video could be used by the algorithm, if his computer's microphone is turned on (or even just plugged in).
Don't need autoplay. Just turn on VPN and incognito mode, register a new account and click on the third recommended video on the homepage. It's probably Joe Rogan, Jordan B. Peterson or some national tabloid complaining about refugees. I did this a couple of times, it works.
My experiment would be to do this, but click on the first clickbait looking title on the sidebar every time. I assume you would hit conspiracy almost immediately.
But the reason they are using autoplay is because it’s the only way to remove human bias, if your clicking on something that’s clickbaity right leaning content you’re obviously gonna get to the far right really easy because that requires a person bias to want to click on far right content
the way this is actually kinda true? i tried this on an alt account of mine that i dont use for watching content - its subbed to very few channels, none of which are overtly political (most of my recommended is gaming content and lets players/streamers - the most overtly biased channels im subbed to on there are musicians and snapcube 😭) and i searched "news" on that and IT RECOMMENDED ME FOX NEWS??????
He's not alt right himself but regularly gives conspiracy theories more validity than they deserve. I personally would classify him as "gateway alt-right" @@markpat1849

Bruh the German video at the start is DDR: East Germany, which did have a sus aesthetic (not as modified as West Germany) but was certainly not far-right. Auferstanded aus Ruinen is a song about never letting fascism rise again.
All I remember from the Cold War German history is that West Germany kinda just stopped denazification and gave many positions of power in the West German government to ex-Nazi party members. At the same time, the East just continued with the trials. Then it devolved because of Sanctions and incompetent leadership while the West got a pretty big stimulus package from the USA despite their resistance to prosecuting nazis... It's almost like the USA wanted fascists in power to purge communists.
Yeah, I feel like the algorithm definitely pays attention to details like which videos are being skipped, which ones are being paused, and so on. To make this completely unbiased he’d have to play each video in full… but that would probably take him A LOT of time lol
Another problem with the video (other than using incognito mode for anonymity, pointed by other commenters) is how TH-cam recommendations work. TH-cam takes into consideration how long you were watching a video. Since you're skipping the videos, TH-cam thinks you don't like them, so it shows you different content from what you were watching (over a longer period of time, not immediately) And then the videos you thought were leaning closer to alt-right, you were watching for longer, so youtube was recommending it for you more. EDIT: There's so much wrong with this video, I can't even-
Its literally what pushed me down the alt right rabbit hole when i was 15. Started with minecraft, moved to Milo Yiannapolis, ended with Ben Shapiro. I was really into that garbage for a long time, too. Alt right youtube in 2016 also led often to atheist channels (a lot of which were going after culture war stuff). I became an alt right atheist within about a year or so of watching that sort of content, but the more atheist content i watched the more i cared about "critical thinking" and understanding how to read sources. That shifted me away from the alt right garbage because you realize real quickly how many of the pundits in that field manipulate facts to fit their narrative. Now im a liberal atheist. Long story, but the youtube rabbit hole did a number
@@heckingbamboozled8097 A few years ago video games briefly turned into a political battleground and the right was more internet savvy, so it's not surprising. Today someone like Destiny would have prevented Milo from getting that popular.
It's great to see that the "alt-right pipeline" isn't as bad as it used to be! I remember watching videos like this even a couple years ago with _vastly_ different (read: worse) results. Gives me a little hope :)
Im glad for this video! We have to consider that our brain also contains “algorithms” and in hindsight it’s abit unfair to blame the yt algorithm for radicalizing people. You fall into these spaces at the intersection of life circumstance and a system that attempts to keep you watching as long as humanly possible above all else. I’m glad to see the isolation of variables even if we can’t blame the mysterious algo for all our problems.
Its not bad in autoplay, but if you use TH-cam like a normal person, it still tries to send you down the path of alt-right. It doesnt even matter if you click on "not interested" or "dont show videos like this", it still gonna feed this stuff into your homepage.
Its still really bad. We just chose a really weird starting point. Getting a new account will reccommend u sum like MrBeast and Joe Rogan, which will soon go to right wing stuff.

no for real, i was watching a video heavily critical of the unsavoury power imbalance/age gap/etc found in the webcomic lore olympus, and that somehow led me to another channel whose video thumbnails/names all read as real 'anti-sjw' content. i guess the algorithm doesn't see political bias when showing interest in any sort of media criticism, but honestly the fact that this has happened to me twice within the exact same video niche (comics) kinda makes it easier to understand how these reactionary ideas are being spoon-fed to people - by seeping into seemingly 'apolitical' personal interests

I'd argue this was a VERY biased experiment. TH-cam still tracks which videos you hover over, spend more time on, pause and continue, etc, essentially all "points of interest". And you clearly were interested in finding right -wing content, pausing and watching through right-wing content, while devoting lower watchtime to left-wing content. Also, this user behaviour is by no means normal. The question was how many videos it takes, to see if there's a bias. He found out how many, and it really doesn't seem like there's a noticeable one. Just wanted to mention. Even in incognito mode, TH-cam knows your router's IP address, thus your location and generally, the device you are using. Even without any cookies, it will make recommendations based on what you searched and watched before. A VPN would mask YOUR watching history, but it's servers are used by countless people, who also watch videos. There is no 100% no bias on the Internet, though in your case using incognito is fine, using a VPN would just be a different bias, you did the best you could.
pretty much sums it up. Even further youtube will serve you stuff in your local area when it has no idea what you like. Because it is a safer bet. You are more likely to get served chrisitan stuff if you live in the bible belt. That is if you have a relatively new online history.

You watching the conservative ads and watching alt-right videos for longer instead of instantly skipping them like the other videos may have changed your results
Seeing your conclusion of what constitutes "alt-right" content is enlightening, because by my own standards of the term I would've concluded that you never really got there.
a little delusional today are we? bro didn't watch the video when he got to trump, musk, ted cruz, greene and other conservative shiet (all notoriously center, or left wing by your standard I suppose huh)
so here's a thing as well: you will get different recommendations depending how long you watch a video, if you repeat it, if you skip parts, if you skip to the end, if you re-watch it. if you press skip rather than letting it finish, you get different results.
Cute experiment idea, but we know that people don't use TH-cam this way. The website knows you're skipping to the end of the video. It tracks literally everything you do (this is standard BI for an online product). People also don't rely exclusively on autoplay, either, but that much is fairly obvious. You could have started with the most searched terms (PewDiePie is #1 currently, though still just a small fraction of searches), or a harmless apolitical entry point like a how-to video. Or, hell, jump straight to the news (a nonpartisan entry point probably best) and just see where it takes you, and just skip all the extra steps and spare yourself from hours of children's music. We also already know who the target demographic is for alt-right content, and I've found the most exploitative and egregious entry point to be self-help videos. There are, of course, other categories of videos that will likely land you in the same place after awhile (dating advice, prank videos, drama videos, religious content, NASCAR, etc. seem like probable candidates.) The algorithm knows its targets, but you didn't provide it much concrete information about your usage habits. It clearly had no real idea of what your demographic is. For transparency's sake, you should spend a lot more time prefacing the video with the flaws of the test methodology, or at least covering them thoroughly in the conclusion. The only thing we learned today is that autoplay is not the best at showing you desirable content after awhile of skipping through videos.
@@yaammee no cus I violently reject video editing as a skill or hobby 😭 I blame ADHD but it's definitely more than just that. It would however be fascinating to document how quickly the alt-right pipeline works for their target demographics whenever you search for self-help or "conservatives" as a general term on this website. It's... very strange how easily you can land on Ben Shapiro/Daily Wire pages with the right searches.
I see film TH-cam being a dangerous entry point. It was sort of my entry point. People like Ben Shapiro are largely responsible, for he considers himself a film buff, not to mention that there are grifters all over film TH-cam, talking about how Hollywood is super "woke". There are especially dangerous groups of these people who are literal entry points to people like Alex Jones

I'd love to see an experiment like this tracking the ads you see regardless of the content of the video. My algorithm leans left and nerdy, but I still get tons of Epoch Times and alt right ads.
I've noticed this too, and I would have to guess it's an intentional move by those advertisers. I think it's very unlikely that I'll be converted to a different ideology by a PragerU ad among my breadtube slop, but hey it's their dollars, not mine.
In my city we call epoch times "twink times" because they put a bunch of billboards up with just a picture of some twink and weird slogans that basically mean nothing on them.
@@SeveralAnts It makes me think of a Suberbowl years ago where there were two competing major brands (either coke/pepsi or Bud/Miller something like that) and there would be bidding wars to get the best ad space during the game. One year one of the two brands just didn't compete for the big ad space. Instead they bought multiple times the ads space in locally broadcast commercial time in targeted areas for a fraction of the cost. They got way more impact than they would have buring one 30 sec ad nationally. Maybe right wing ideals will get picked up by the algorithm, but they can just target teenage males who are interested in shooting games, cars, and MMA with pre-roll ads and get way more influence than the algorithm.
23:30 This is sensitive dependence on initial conditions. It doesn't just matter which video you are on, it matters how you got there. You get the republican stuff because you listened to southern children songs for hours on end. But you also listened to hippie stuff about healing vibes and a bunch of communist stuff. Oh also the algorithm notices when you skips over most of a video.
Just so you know, in Gacha you can create characters. People have made their versions of the characters of BSD through it. Same with many other anime fandoms. It's easier than just drawing a skit.
the far-right would argue that there's a concrete difference between them and conservatives and vice-versa. whether they like to admit it or not, they actively feed each other under the belief they could control and use each other to advance their goals. The right certainly builds a concrete foundation that makes the right-wing susceptible to far right ideology. People like Fuentes all started out as normal conservatives before becoming radical.
Yeah I think this is normal though for both sides of the spectrum, I knew people who went from liberal democrat to social democrat to communist. Funny thing though is I also knew a guy who was a neo-n*zi in high school who then became a communist, that guy had a load of issues though.
@@asmallphd9648 honestly, it makes sense that people change their views and move around on the political spectrum. people get new information, make new experiences and form new thoughts.
@@asmallphd9648 the best predictor for becoming part of a radical group is having been part of a radical group in the past. the amount of terrorist and radical ideologues that did the most jarring 180 turns are plenty. from the far left to radical islam, from neo nazi to tankie communist and so on and so forth. the reason for why thats so common is that the prerequisites for justifying these behaviors only ever slightly differ between each of these groups.

TH-cam led me down the alt right pipeline around 2015-16, but thankfully I got out of that a long time ago. Imagine if i kept auto-playing those videos and it led me to Gacha. I'd be a very different person
if i was older, new to the social media, curious about video content and an undecided voter, i'd type 'youtube news' and probably speedrun this process as the suggestions are already news programs. i know this because my grandma, upon buying herself a new phone, fell into a rabbit hole of right-wing content exactly like that
While this seems like a really interesting concept for an experiment, I think skipping all of the videos might ruin the point of it. As far as i am aware, the algorithm is currently aimed at increasing watchtime, so not giving any watchtime will mean you won't give the algorithm any direction. If, during this, you are looking out for specific content to come up, like alt right content, you are very likely to spend a little bit longer on that content when it randomly comes by, just to talk about what is happening and that you might start getting results. This could tell the algorithm that this is what you are interested in, thus very slowly reinforcing that you are interested in alt right content, at least a slight bit more than all of the other videos you have been skipping. From what I have personally seen reported, the main concern is that youtube pulls people into these rabbit holes by just randomly giving them some alt right video at first, possibly with an interesting premise, and because they watch it keep recommending more, where the subject goes slightly more extreme every time. While i have not recently checked whether this is still the case, back when I saw this being reported on more (about a year ago, if my memory serves me correct), this was the way some fresh youtube accounts basically picking from their front page at random and then sticking to autoplay while watching the videos in its entirity could end up on very extreme alt-right content or conspiracy theories within 1-5 hours of actually watching youtube. Besides that, this still seems like an interesting video, and I think it is funny to see how long youtube will keep you in these loops even if you show absolutely no interest in it. I wonder if you would have ever broken out of the music loop, and if other loops like the sports loop might have gone on for way longer if you actually gave the videos some watchtime. I don't think any real conclusions can be drawn from this without also taking notes on any left content, and running this with a whole load of accounts to make sure the randomness doesn't bring out some weird anecdote, but it is nonetheless interesting to see one run of it

I think the problem here is that the rudder in neutral is steering right... alt right
Skips through over 400 Obama Ads, then actually watches the one republican interview he gets auto played and the algorithm starts recommending other republicans during House and Senate hearings.

As it was pointed out in other of these TH-cam experiments, you're not watching the whole video. You're skipping right to the end. The algorithm recognizes that you're not watching the content in it's totality, and thus tries to recommend you a different topic you might like.
if this was true, why all these loops ?

I played jedi survivor and searched for a guide on how to finish one speicific side collectible.
Now I get flooded with Jedi Survivor Let's Plays.
While this is true, it‘s a huge leap of faith to say „oh he‘s not interested in anime stuff, let‘s suggest literal nazi shit“.
The idea is pretty interesting, basically where will the algorithm lead us, but the execution is horrible.
1. TH-cam will recognize that you muted content.
2. TH-cam knowns that you skipped through a video (less watchtime/interest)
3. hovering and autoplaying over a video can already count as viewing (I think it depends on time, there is some 3 or so second threshold before it counts as started to watch)
If you really want to do this, you would need to set up a blank computer that runs for ages on autoplay and see where it leads you, but it would probably take years, given that TH-cam likes to spam you with 3-12 hour endless videos of music or podcasts (more watchtime, especially when you fall asleep).
I doubt autoplay even is factored in that much, most of the algorithm is based on the sidebar, people don't use autoplay unless its for music or playlists
thanks for the summary I don't really want to watch 30 minutes of this tbh lol
Someone mentioned shorts. Maybe if you left a computer on autoplay in the shorts tab you'd see quicker results, because you can't skip through the videos but they're only a few minutes long at most. There's also a lot more dumb shit posted there so I'm sure the radicalization would be fast.
Not to mention that the only video he manually selected war relating to trump, not a great test.
10 Hours of The Price is Right Horn (you're welcome)
Fun video, but it lacks on the "scientific" side of things, the algorithm accounts for how long you engage with content among other stuff.
Not to mention he even skewed it to start finding political content. And despite that and the Trump shooting just happening it still managed to steer him toward alt-left content praising communism lol
Yes the experiment is poisoned by the fact that he spends actual time looking at the content he's after
Then he would get stuck at hour long compilations as when you let it just play, longer videos will get viewed longer (because they’re just simply longer) and so the algorithm thinks you want to watch longer videos.

Ah yes, my favourite altright content creator Joe Rogan

20 minutes in and he did recognize the emblem! I'm not sure if he recognized the song though.
Are you not affecting the algorithm by skipping to the end of videos?
Yeah, I feel like the algorithm definitely pays attention to details like which videos are being skipped, which ones are being paused, and so on. To make this completely unbiased he’d have to play each video in full… but that would probably take him A LOT of time lol
This was my thought at the beginning. Not actually finishing a video or watching for a decent period of time is all tracked by the algorithm.
😅
it does, but at the same time no one would want to sit through a 12 hour lofi stream lol
He definitely is.
Another problem with the video (other than using incognito mode for anonymity, pointed by other commenters) is how TH-cam recommendations work. TH-cam takes into consideration how long you were watching a video. Since you're skipping the videos, TH-cam thinks you don't like them, so it shows you different content from what you were watching (over a longer period of time, not immediately)
And then the videos you thought were leaning closer to alt-right, you were watching for longer, so youtube was recommending it for you more.
EDIT: There's so much wrong with this video, I can't even-
I remember as a kid, a video of Minecraft could be left on autoplay and you’d end up with Milo Yiannopoulos
Yeah, the mistake was assuming alt right is a default when it's clearly linked to certain viewing habits this set of random stuff just didn't get to.
I find what you do, also watch any sort of vaguely progressive video and you'll get alt right stuff in your feed for days it seems.
Also this was one experiment, there's a good chance another that didn't click on a music video to start with would have been radically different.
no for real, i was watching a video heavily critical of the unsavoury power imbalance/age gap/etc found in the webcomic lore olympus, and that somehow led me to another channel whose video thumbnails/names all read as real 'anti-sjw' content. i guess the algorithm doesn't see political bias when showing interest in any sort of media criticism, but honestly the fact that this has happened to me twice within the exact same video niche (comics) kinda makes it easier to understand how these reactionary ideas are being spoon-fed to people - by seeping into seemingly 'apolitical' personal interests
That's because the latest grift on TH-cam is Conservative Watchdogs intently watching pop culture looking for something to complain about. Well it's not exactly new, before the internet they had letter-writing campaigns, but today it has become a business model.

“You get two choices: baby music or fascism.” - TH-cam
I'd argue this was a VERY biased experiment.
TH-cam still tracks which videos you hover over, spend more time on, pause and continue, etc, essentially all "points of interest".
And you clearly were interested in finding right -wing content, pausing and watching through right-wing content, while devoting lower watchtime to left-wing content.
Also, this user behaviour is by no means normal.
I would love to see a repeat with the goal to see how long it took to find far-left content, but that would take a lot of time again, and still not be conclusive...
i think we can quite certainly conclude with "TH-cam is quite good at figuring out what you want to watch" and "TH-cam has a bias towards non-independent journalism" (but to be fair, it would be hard for a machine to tell a conspiracy theorist and a real journalist apart, so i guess it makes sense)
I agree. If anything, this video proves that it doesn't have a bias towards politics of either political side. It has a bias towards low effort videos that keep the viewer (a toddler here?) engaged.
@@bearman1625 it's only bias was mainstream media political coverage and desperately trying to get you to cast your vote for Obama in an election more than a decade past.

Furthermore, this video was filmed before Biden dropped out, so at the time, Obama's literal VP was one of the two condidates.
Wym?

One year one of the two brands just didn't compete for the big ad space. Instead they bought multiple times the ads space in locally broadcast commercial time in targeted areas for a fraction of the cost. They got way more impact than they would have buring one 30 sec ad nationally. Maybe right wing ideals will get picked up by the algorithm, but they can just target teenage males who are interested in shooting games, cars, and MMA with pre-roll ads and get way more influence than the algorithm.

the far-right would argue that there's a concrete difference between them and conservatives and vice-versa. whether they like to admit it or not, they actively feed each other under the belief they could control and use each other to advance their goals.
The right certainly builds a concrete foundation that makes the right-wing susceptible to far right ideology. People like Fuentes all started out as normal conservatives before becoming radical.
