Their pre-disco era had some beautiful songs; "Massachusetts", 'To Love Somebody", "Words", "First Of May" among others.
The BEE GEES were never Disco and they hated when anyone would suggest that they were Disco...I still have their interview on cassette tape saying that!!

You hit the nail on the head when you said they sound amazing live. The Bee Gees are a rarity in that they sound the same live as they do on the recorded version. That's pure talent because their voices are not "doctored' up. Those are their true voices and no one can replicate the Bee Gees, especially Robin. His voice is magnificent. React to For Whom the Bell Tolls, if you haven't already. You will know what I mean when you hear that one.
There is absolutely no other band that can come close to them! They were musical geniuses in every sense of the word! Songwriters, singers, musicians, producers...all while being unable to read a note! Wrote hit sings for everyone from Barbra Streisand & Diana Ross to Kenny Rogers & everyone in between! And managed to keep themselves musically relevant through each decade from the 60s into the 2000s...constantly reinventing their music. Just truly amazing,!
Robin had the voice of an angel but all three were amazingly talented and sang since they were children.
I just adore Robin's voice... and this song. Also love "Words."
The Bee Gees were so much better before they discovered/invented disco
Of course they had the advantage of being brothers, which always gives an extra dimension to harmonizing. But they were self taught, pretty much from when they were tiny kids, Robin&Maurice 6 and Barry at 9. What makes them extra special is their writing/composing talent, which was also self taught. For guys who didn't finish high school and who never learned to read or write music, they were truly gifted.
As a 56 year old musician, I can tell you.... it is possible to sound awesome without autotune and super engineering... in fact, there are some things engineering can't fake.
As one of the senior fans, I grew up listening to this music. I love the early BeeGees a little more than the disco stuff
For my money, Chod, this is when the Bee Gees were at their greatest! Some more songs from this era you may want to hit up include, Words, Holiday, To Love Somebody, New York Mining Disaster, I've Just Gotta Get A Message To You and I Started A Joke! One thing you can always be sure of in a Bee Gees song is great vocals and/or harmonies, and I am pleased you recognized them for that! Peace, Chod!!
I totally agree about early Bee Gees! Great selection of songs! Although I have loved them their entire career, the early stuff hits me where I live!
My stepdad (lovely man) got my mum to say yes to his proposal by singing "Words" to her. He had a beautiful voice and looked like Cat Stevens. They married in 75 and "their" song apart from BGs is "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" CSNY, and still is. Thanks Dad for bringing your self and your record collection to our lives. 46 yrs strong. Love them so much.
If you want to really have your mind blown watch the accoustic medley from this concert. Seriously! All three of them around one mic harmonizing like superhumans.
Not to mention all the songs they wrote for other artists floating around out there
They have such good harmonies because they're brothers and performed together live from they were young boys.
There is a video of them when they were just kids, that blows my mind! I love when Robin takes lead vocals!
When I was growing up in the 60s and would hear a Bee Gees song on which Robin sang lead, I remember thinking that I didn't like his voice, specifically his vibrato. However, after I grew up and my tastes changed and broadened, I found that I liked the uniqueness of his voice.

The story goes that the Bee Gee's were on tour in Boston when the great northeastern blackout occurred. Thus the line " and the lights all went down in Massachusetts ".
" Mining Disaster " is worth checking out.

@@steveullrich7737 - That's because it's not true. They had never been to Massachusetts when (Robin primarily) wrote this song. It was written in New York. There were two NE US blackouts, one in 2002 and one in 1965. This song was written in 1967, two years later.

There is nothing as magical as hearing brothers who have been singing together since they were young kids harmonising.
Fantastic Robin lead vocal on this one. Nice to see folks checking out the pre-disco Bee Gees songs.Those harmonies? The secret is that they are siblings with HOURS and HOURS of singing together under their belts. But it is hard to comprehend when they are nailing those harmony lines to the point where their vibrato is in perfect synch. LOL. Check out their track Lonely Days. More of that fantastic early BeeGees vibe. No one will ever equal the originals, but your jaw would drop if you checked out the REO Brothers Bee Gees Medley.

Not to mention, Robin and Maurice were fraternal twins. The harmonies were definitely familial linked.
The one thing you have to realize is, that the reason they sound so good is because they are brothers and have been singing together since they were children. They have had time to perfect their craft. Nice to see your generation appreciate their skills.

You mentioned how good they sounded here live, but you must check out just the 3 of them singing with an acoustic guitar…..it’s literally unbelievable!!! They also have a couple unplugged sessions floating around as well👍!
Saw them live in 1975 in a small concert hall and they were amazing, best concert I've seen in my life; I've been listening to them since the late 60's and they do not have a bad song. For fun you should react to the videos when they were children.

I get so sick of people shitting on disco, I'll bet the Bee Gees were more than happy to be one of the biggest bands of the 70's because of their disco music and I bet they made a butt load of $ during that time frame, do I love their pre disco music ? Absolutely because they are amazing...♡

I strongly prefer their pre-Disco music. Even after the Disco era they never really shook that sound.

They had no formal musical training. They play instruments by ear. And, none of them could read music. Sheer natural talent.
My neighbor drove down to Cape Cod to see the Bee Gees, and there was a power failure. For a couple of years we had lots of power failures.

NIGHTS ON BROADWAY /THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL is another one that might be my fav live performance by them
I think this is one of their greatest songs. But there's so many to choose from.
Taking shortcuts back then wasn’t as possible as it is today, and the competition was fierce. Groups like the Bee Gees combined their talent with a strong work ethic and support for each other. It’s a magical combination.
About The Artists From the Sixties and Why The Were So Good: By the time the Bee Gees had their million selling hits in the U.S. they had already been performing HUNDREDS of concerts for YEARS. Same thing with the Beatles, Little Richard, James Brown, and so mny other Legendary Performers from this time period. These groups "Honed Their Chops" by busting their butts in front of audiences going from little club in a little town to another little club in another little town over a number of years. They worked hard at what they did. This is how you Refine Your Craft. There is no substitute for having spent years together performing. That's how they manage to make Perfection Look Effortless!

You should do a reaction of the Bee Gees when they are on a talk show and do a song either acapella or accompanied with only one or two acoustic guitars.

as pro musicians singer songwriters there is no one better. These guys can do any thing and come out number one always. This style of music disco or country . Always have number 1 tunes. Early Bee Gees nobody could touch. Every thing was a hit. Beatles write good tunes The Bee Gees write the best.

Great reaction! If you like their live stuff you should check out their album “Here at Last... Bee Gees... Live” recorded at The Forum on December 20th 1976. There was supposed to be a live concert video as well but they were unhappy with the footage (perfectionists) so it was never released. But the album is fantastic!

Ok, but you only can say, YOU like his voice better. I'm not using terms like better or the best, so that's not objective. More unique, yes! Better? I'm a big fan of them, but never did try to prefer one of them more than the other. To me, they're an untit. The magic is always threeleged. Remember, they're born manx. BTW, many friends of mine, which are not big fans of the Bee Gees, but respectin' them, always are sayin' that Robin's voice sounds a bit to much hurting in their ears, so they loved it when leadvocals were shared between them.
Please try the last songs before Maurice passed away. Great song "This Is Where I Came In". I have not seen any reactions to it.

The sentimentality of this song is powerful. It hits home with me since I used to go up there to the Berkshire Mts on ski trips in my youth. It’s a wonderful place !

Chod, you really do need to listen to Lonely Days (th-cam.com/video/O3YC5sc_V6I/w-d-xo.html), which is another "sound" from the Bee Gees. For decades, I believed that this song was by the Beatles; it is very Beatle-esque IMO. I don't know if that was by design, or maybe it's jut the sound of the era. Doesn't really matter though, because the song is fantastic.
Jesus hair and afros. For real. Can't grow an afro unfortunately, but I'm proud of my Jesus hair lol. Grateful for your reaction. This live album was on repeat in the parents car throughout my pre teen years.

I do like their disco music, but I enjoy their older songs more. I suggest that you give their baby brother a listen. Not comparing. Andy Gibb's: "Shadow Dancing", "I Just Want to Be Your Everything", "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water", "An Everlasting Love" ect.

I prefer the 1967 original studio recording with it's mesmerizing symphonic strings. Here the synths are not my cup of tea, they sound too low class ... Some suggestions, the songs :"Method to my madness", "Crying every day", " Sweet song of summer", "Every Christian lion hearted man will show you", "Odessa", "Ida", "I can't let you go", " Heavy breathing", " Trafalgar", and hundreds of many more, .....

Being good live made you into a superstar who could tour the world. People herd it, if you didn't sound good Live you had nothing. Music Video and later Computers creating insane Bass notes made average beats sound hardcore, adding a Visual component to a purely Audio format, you can Visually distract when the audio is weak, so A concert became A spectacular show with Visuals and action. Music Video's basically use women in sexy outfits as a distraction, It won't be as good unless it is purely Audio again.
This song charted in 1967, when I was 13. I can remember it well. Some of the recorded live performances of ''Massachusetts'' [ LIKE THIS ONE ] were better than the original studio recording..........
