+AinaweeUAE I doubt you would say the same statement if you were to commentate the game in real time and left just with your own calculations without post-game analysis done by others.
In as much as I am an intermediate chess player, I can still confidently say I could have spotted those weak moves easily. Especially the pawn move, that was terrible. I've played enough chess to know some bad moves.
MTlelek Absolutely true. But that wasn't the point of my initial comment, was it? :) Think about it this way: if a very intermediate chess player like me realised that move was bad, a grandmaster like euwe should do definitely better. Anyway humans make mistakes and more so under pressure.
My point was that it is too easy pointing out the obvious, especiall after the game, no bravery in that. And still. I tend to doubt, that if you were to commentate the game live, that you would be so confident in judging the move. It s a GM and intermediate player would tend to wonder if there is some line that makes it work out...
What a bitter lesson for a young and rising superstar, Max Euwe. I doubt seriously Euwe ever again committed errors like this on his way to the World Championship. Against the legend, Alekhine, one mistake : you lose . Two mistakes: you're crushed.
Because the chessboard showed black at the bottom for this TH-cam video, Max Euwe must have thought he was going to win and probably didn't try too hard.
In 1980, I played in a chess tournament in Saratoga, CA where two GM's gave simuls, Boris Spassky and Max Euwe. The boards for Max Euwe were quickly filled while many boards for Boris Spassky were still available. This only 8-years after Fischer-Spassky too. I played Boris Spassky and lost quickly. I wanted to play Euwe in order to say I sat across the board from someone who played Alekhine. Max Euwe gave a talk too where someone asked him if Alekhine was drunk during their match. He said no. Sadly, Max Euwe died the next year.
Alekhine was a great player, but Euwe played very poorly here for a future world champion. Mato, your chess videos are top notch! I notice most are attacking, tactical games and usually relatively short games. Do you ever do videos of the longer more positional games?
By the way I love how it's not certain which side is going to win these days (after more than 1000 videos you are getting used to the bottom side winning
What do I think of this game? Euwe played like a 1600 elo player or even lower. Very poorly. Can't really understand how he could have played like that.
+Electronite1337 people who resort to bold statements about the defeated AFTER the battle... what a bravery. Probably you would defeat this poor player Euwe blindfolded.
Well it is the truth. Should I lie instead? Nothing bold about it. That is the reason why I can't really understand how he could have played like that. As several moves were obvious blunders. Only possible explanation is that it was a bullet/blitz game otherwise really strange.
Man, those two moves were disastrous. I can't believe he played those moves.

that´s nice and all, but still I think that after those bad moves, if you were to play the rest of the game against Euwe, you would not win.

Mato, you've got the best voice in Chess. Keep these videos going! We are all learning a lot.
+Ben Goodman Thank you
Another enjoyable game and commentary Mato. Thank you.

I found the move, but getting there takes a lot more. The young Max Euwe was overwhelmed by the Alekhine mystique.
Genius Alekhine. It seems so clear and simple! Good to see the black/dark side!
Great video of two legendary Chess Players, Mato! I've enjoyed watching it. ☺
You should do a series in which we give you our chess games and you can choose the most interesting one and analyse it. It would stimulate everybody
Dear Mato, I've become an intermediate level player from a beginner just by watching your videos. Many thanks.
+Rahul T Well done. Can you please make that comment here: th-cam.com/users/MatoJelicdiscussion

he wasn't playing chess, he was just moving pieces around.

LOL

+The Nick Thank you for your valuable comment

It almost seems like Alekhine makes his opponents look like beginners
A loss from black's pov... Isn't that a first for you? I kept expecting black to turn the tables and recover.
+mpeterll Me too
+MatoJelic hiiii
+mpeterll Yup, Mato fooled us. It was a nice surprise, though. Way to mix it up, Mato (and thanks for the great videos)
Great Game...
Love it Mato...:)
@2:07; can't white play Bc3?
this game described my life so accurately, good in the opening and then mistakes happens, ruined everything
more Capablanca games plz
HWhat (pause) did Euwe (pause) learn from dis game?
I was wondering at the start how Max beat Alekhine, and I was like no way man.
Eeuwe was 19 at the time, so I expect he was not as experienced then as most people know him to be.
By the way I love how it's not certain which side is going to win these days (after more than 1000 videos you are getting used to the bottom side winning
one bad move make great advantage for against
I need a t-shirt that says ' white played a move... And black resigned.'
"Hikaru Nakamura" (with Mato's accent)
nice game
Mato, its "Den Haag" :)
for a while I thought Mister Max Euwe was unbeatable
Even I would not have played ... g6 if White's Queen were so close to my King.
In 1981 my mom was born
+Adolf Vader ok cool, but that's 60 years after the game
happy birthday choo choo choo
+Kevin Vs. Gamingz This proves that when a door closes another one opens
+dmwmm I mean the death of Euwe not the game
your mom is lucky to be born that day i guess
This was a lame performance by Euwe.
Actually, Alehine was closed to lose this game.
Shame MAx Euwe had a great position, really should have not weekend his majesty there.
Adrian Monk Ahh same shit, glad I made you laugh kid
Euwe played very badly. He was not yet as strong as he became later, winning the world championship against Alekhine in 1935.
Euwe se pravilno izgovara Erva
dreadful play by euwe, while he was doing so well!

Tiwaking Tiwaking Magnus played a draw against Garry when he 13 and won Karpov so age is not an explanation
max has beaten Alexander Alekhine...
for the world championship ..hana ?
