Thank you for watching and commenting. Sometimes it's as easy as brushing them off. We tend to over complicate things sometimes. As long as you only have a couple of opuntias and not a whole plantation or something like that.🙂👍
Great info thanks. I am in Valencia, Spain and have a big infestation on an old nopal, going to brush like crazy. If I dust and spray, should I separate treatments in time or what? Thanks for your great info!
Hello. I would just start with brushing. You may have to do it a couple times over a few days at first. See how that goes. It may be all you need. The dusting and spraying options should be done seperately . I don´t think the two would mix well. Probably cancel each other out. Do you have cochineal in Valencia? Valencia is one of the few areas in Spain that I haven´t visited yet. I´m really looking forward to it though. Thanks for watching and commenting. Garden on!
Great question! These little creatures are not the best walkers or climbers. Actually, their friends the ants often help transport them around to new feeding areas. In exchange the ants eat the "honeydew" created by the cochineal. I´ve found that some are back in position on the day after but once brushed off again very few come back the next day. Definitely not a permanent fix but certainly a way to prevent the total destruction of your cactus. Also, they are soft bodied creatures and quite sensitive so often the brushing is enough to cause fatal damage. Total eradication is tough but the main idea is to prevent total infestation. I just monitor the activity and brush as needed. Once every couple of weeks now. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Won't the Cochineal just climb back on the cactus ?
