Thank you all SO much for the support on my first longform video! I am already looking at some ways to improve, and I’ll be filming my next video this coming week. Expect to see videos of this quality & length 2-3 times a month for now (may increase with time too but for now its only me working on this!) 🩵✨
Hey Addy!! ^_^ I just wanted to tell you that you're doing AMAZING! The video was so fun to watch and did not get boring at all! (It's surprising since I imagine that for a lot of short video creators it might be hard to transition into a long and more dedicated format!) "Cutecore" (I honestly never called like that, same with "Animecore", introduced me to harajuku, and also, mostly your content! I've had really nice experiences even if I can't use the style that much! Though I would say that it also made me really ashamed of my body and also incentivated at some level my sh addiction TT!! But honestly those are problems I've been carrying since I was 5 or 6 years old! I just turned 16 now, (yes I'm old lol) and I wanted to tell you that your content changed me for the better, thank you so much! - Blue, Santiago, Chile (With love from my grandma also!)
LMAO I’m so glad I got into kawaii fashion before the “cutecore” thing bc I can’t imagine thinking that u can’t say kawaii without being Japanese or that dressing in Japanese fashion makes u an Asian fisher 😭😭 and it’s sad bc there’s still sm kids who have gotten into this style through Tik tok that still think like that just bc a random teenager on the app said so :’)
@@ssgg12333 YEAHHH i got into jfashion since i was 10 (im 20 now💀) and as an asian and my ex was also jp so i asked him abt these kind of stuff and WE DONT GIVE A FUCK unless ure actually fetishizing lol! kids these days need to research on what’s actually offensive/problematic
@@ssgg12333 fr!! I have the word "kawaii" in my handmade jewelry brand name and I know tons of handmade Japanese artist with words in my language (Italian) in their brand name, I think it's wonderful to have this kind of connection, how someone can call this "slur"!
Heyya! Someone who live in Ghana speaking. I can confirm, SO MANY clothes wash up on beaches, to the point where I had to stop surfing! You do not realise the sheer amount of trash that washes up on shores here. It hurts me talking about this because it's gotten so much worse as of recent.
@@Kandi_.Sharks now that’s a really good thing for both young people and the environment! These unlucky stranded clothes need to be recycled into blankets, and I’ve also saved lots of formerly unwanted items from dumping sales, which is partly because I’m also tired of Salvos and St Vinnies controlling much of my country’s secondhand market.
as an alt kawaii girlie for at least 14 years, it pains me to see younger girls suffering to get that perfect kawaii wardrobe in like 2 weeks with no money or experience. Take your time and learn that there is no expiration date to have fun with with your personal style! Don't compare yourself to people twice your age! Dont be too hard on yourself!
Same here! I'm punk and I dress in a very gothic style. The point of the movement is helping the world out, not overconsuming, and leanring to be self sufficient and help your community. It saddens me to see "punk" people just buying a whole alternative wardrobe from SHEIN or something and then wearing it, calling themselves punk, without knowing anything about the subculture.
im trying to dress in cute/kawaii way with cute skirts, ribbons and everything but idk where to buy clothes like that T-T, i have been wanting to dress like this for 3 years now! and not only this style, also alt in general :(
Thank you for this! I have always been conscious of my style because I'm afraid it's too basic or if I do try to get out of the mold, "too weird" I've definitely fallen into traps of wanting to splurge all my money to get that one perfect-looking wardrobe for me but I'm glad that I didn't. Right now, I just have fun experimenting with stuff I currently have and trying to style it in an interesting way. I think this approach really helped me develop a more healthy relationship with fashion, one that is not too concerned with the outcome but rather, just having fun!
@@ch1pz-z look at people online, photos, etc! thrift if you can, make clothes if you can! Buying clothes and altering/layering them into something new is one of the biggest things in alternative fashion. If yu have the time, learn to sew! Knit! Embroider! Crochet! theres so much you can do with clothing once you start looking into it. I haven't bought a piece of mas produced clothing in ten years, which I understand is something not everyone can do, but whatever clothing I do thrift I alter it to make it what I like.
@@yourlocaltheatrekid900 thanks for the tips, I thrift all the time. My family also thrifts more than buying first hand clothing. It's just that I can't really find what I'm into at all, so thank you so much for these tips 🙏
What I never understood about "fast-fashion" is the fact that people throw their clothes away? Maybe it's because I come from a poorer family, but we have never ever thrown clothes into the trash. If something rips or breaks we sew it back together or use the material for something else. If we've outgrown something it becomes a hand me down or gets donated and if we don't like the style of something anymore but it still fits us we keep it and wear incase we ever wanna wear that style again. I don't really think that the problem with fast fashion is how it's produced (unless it's made in unethical situations but that's a different topic entirely) but how people treat their belongings.
The thing about most of these fast fashion pieces is they fall apart SUUUUUUUPER quickly. Like mind-blowingly fast. But honestly, the consumer is only half of the issue… Places like Zara, H&M, and *especially* SHEIN are producing insane amounts of product for incredibly cheap and rotating out their stock frequently. It’s a problem that’s really accelerated in the 2020s but has been around a while. There are clothing dumping grounds in places like Chile where you’ll find mountains of clothes that have never been worn. The issue is much more depressing than people being wasteful with money…
@@Hannah_Becton Yeah, I get that but like what's a non fast-fashion place to buy. At least in small towns like where I grew up there isn't a place to be able to buy clothes for an affordable price that won't break quickly. We usually sew it like I said, but we cannot afford small family owned brands etc. since they're usually much more expensive since the cost of making for them is much bigger than for bigger and unethical brands.
rly hyped for this video cuz i never see anyone talk about the late 2022-2023 tiktok cutecore era AT ALL anymore. it’s like everyone just forgot all about it. remember people like maylolla, meloclaws, and awlilla(she’s still active but no longer “cutecore”)?? 🎀
Honestly I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it just so happened to be the black cosplayer that received all that hate and harassment about “cultural appropriation” and “kawaii is a slur.” Considering there are thousands of white cosplayers who dress up as Japanese characters yet don’t get that type of hate I doubt most of her harassers were doing it in good faith.
I LOVE cutecore I've loved it since 2019 but back then I didn't know what to call it. Its true theres people that are mean, racist, fatphobic, etc. I've experienced a couple of these and it sucks because I love the fashion and aesthetic and I've met a lot of great people but also a lot of toxic people which sucks because now some people think everyone who uses the aesthetic are toxic. I've been told by someone that I can't be a cutecore girl before because I'm black so "my skin color wouldn't fit the style" and because I'm not skinny. It didn't affect me much but I know that could really hurt someone. I wish it was just a nice non-toxic community but sadly thats not how it is. I hope it gets better though. :c (sorry if this isn't written very well I'm very sleepy rn >_
I'm sorry people were so awful! There's ways to make any style work with your skin tone, different shades work better, but you can wear all your favourite colours and wear what you like in your own way. ^^
Ppl who say that are insecure and suck!!!! I bet you look drop dead gorgeous ^_^ There’s a little too much racism and body shaming in the alt community, like it’s so weird :/
This style has been around long before 2020 put the name cutecore to it. It's a japanese fashion called Yami Kawaii that has origins in harajuku. Menhera is another similar one. Both developed sometime in the 2010s, possibly late late 2000s if I recall correctly
yeah, alt fashion like lolita styles , emo, & harajuku fashion were HUGE trends in early 2000s & when I went to cons/ expos as teen/tween. cute core is just the new name re-branded. Asian fashion isn't a new trend
Cutecore is an umbrella term. Yami kawaii 闇かわいいdoes fall under it same as many other fashion styles There’s a core difference between aesthetic and fashion, Aesthetic is your style as an entirety, fashion is a style of clothing you wear. So many fashion styles will come under it However it is a very westernised term, and personally I’d prefer people to atleast mention what fashion style is actually shown, some people say they are cutecore but then only posses the style Jojifuku which really pisses me off cause people get confused and only know the one term. Same as Kawaai/kawaiicore Which means the same fucking thing Please correct me if I’m wrong This is a autistic brain thinking
@@PlxsteredH34rt You're right that aesthetics go way beyond fashion, I'd say as a descriptor for purely the aesthetic, cutecore makes sense. However I feel like because these japanese subcultures predate the term cutecore (by at least a decade too mind you), it doesn't make much sense to use it as an umbrella term when talking about fashion. Again it's almost delegating these subcultures with their own extensive history to fall under this fairly recent westernised term. (I'm autistic too btw) :)
hi, im in the cutecore community myself, and im a decently ok sized account in the scene (almost 30k followers) yadda yadda i am so grateful that you talked about this, since even though having silly rooms on the internet is awesome, this space is still extremely dangerous the cutecore community is mostly filled with 12-16 year olds from what i've seen from my fanbase, and ive seen soooo many kids use pro-loli media as their profile pictures. either that or like cropped NSFW CGs of Aoi Mukou or clearly sexual imagery of Super Sonico On top of this, and what you mentioned about the 'irl-loli', the weird tapestries, and just a lot of cutecores being pro loli- because of this community a lot of kids are unknowingly endangering themselves in fact, a lot of these little kids try to dm me a lot, which I am an adult, so I ignore the DMs. But basically my point with this comment is this community is SO dangerous for kids to be in and im glad you talked about it thank u for reading my yapfest that probably doesnt make sense . stay safe kids
I can tell you that I hate lolis, in fact I bought that one madoka I believe figurine eating the ice cream (rip-off) and immediately destroyed it bc it was weird
The biggest problem with these aesthetics are the giant amount of plastic trinkets and clothes that people accumulate, that they will probably keep for two years or less, get tired of it, disposate of it and buy other plastic trinkets and that's just too much unjustified waste for the planet. Especially clothes like you said already in the video...
I personally buy my clothes at a larger size, despite the fact that I'm now currently arranging at my final size. I don't honestly like buying mezzo piano and all that kinds of stuff; I don't find it worth buying yet i specifically aim for accessories just that. I'm not really a money spender
I really really loved the Kawaii and alt videos trending in 2020. I am dissapointed that for many, it was just a phase... and they overconsumed and threw away. I am still using all the kawaii items I bought. I don't want it to be a phase 😢 it helped me so much being confident in buying alt clothing, being myself and helped me through Covid
I'm in my 30s and I'm glad I don't have to be a young person now. Having a micro label for everything and not being able to just like something is exhausting. Cutecore being labeled as some new style is irritating because it absolutely tries to erase things that have existed for a long time. It's white people wanting to make their own version that they see as the definitive one along with all the usual overt racism. The overconsumption and need to constantly re-label also makes me sick.
I love this style so much!! Been this style for a good 3 years now! The community is great, but it is very difficult being a black alternative girl. It could be problematic at times especially when you don’t fit eastern beauty standards. The overconsumption of items is also very toxic due to people pushing the need to wear certain brands like mezzo piano and mother garden, especially influencing an unhealthy lifestyle of over-consumerism. Over-consumerism It isn’t necessarily a bad thing depending on the person, but it’s bad for many others that enjoy the style. Collecting media and building wardrobes seriously take time. It took me 3 YEARS to FINALLY get the strawberry crocs or atleast one rare piece. I really wish the cutecore community could encourage that more, especially when there’s a younger audience !! Tysm for making a video abt the style!! ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )
not to mention its not very size acceptable :( many brands like mezzo piano etc arent very plus size friendly so its very hard to get into such brands for larger people
@@kiazan1380 i mean mezzo piano IS targeted towards little girls so the sizes would be on the smaller side (not trying to be mean or anything btw so srry if it comes off that way 😭) although i do agree there arent a lot of options for bigger people who enjoy the clothing which rlly sucks :/
Hearing about sugarbunnies in this video made me so happy!! I used to watch the series when I was younger and I reeeally want merch of it- but due to the lack of production it's so hard to find any especially in the region I live in.. Made me so happy when I found an old dvd at the thrift!!! :D
The script is super well written the editing is very smooth and the pacing of the video is so well done i wish it was longer because of how good the composition of this video is! you did a super great job addy!
hii!! im a 16 year old kawaii-fashion lover and i was definitely warped into the cutecore fashion some years ago. Thankfully ive always been aware of the misinformation and harm that this aesthetic can have and I’ve always just called my personal aesthetic as “something close to jojifuku or fairy kei” because… well that’s what it really is. I’ve always seen issues with fast fashion and i think the popularity of brands like mezzo piano and angel blue act as a red herring against the actual fast fashion culture of cutecore. I remember scrolling for countless hours trying to find mezzo piano clothes that i could squeeze into but i just always ended up frustrated. Since that point I’ve thrifted nearly all my clothes or bought things from trustworthy brands. Almost all of my favorite pieces are from goodwill and trust me, i get compliments all the time. Pink shirts with bows, frilly white skirts, fluffy cardigans with big doll-like buttons. It might be more work to thrift and hunt for cute pieces like this but i honestly have much more fun doing it rather than spending 50 dollars on clothes from shein that’ll end up with holes after 3 wears. Basically im just saying that there is hope in the actual aesthetic part. I’ve been wearing this aesthetic consistently for nearly 5 years now and i love it! I don’t really associate with cutecore or any of that community, moreso just kawaii, j-fashion, and alternative spaces in general. Wear what you love, and wear what loves you!
another point i forgot to add is that i was worried that this video wasn’t going to cover the harm that the americanization of kawaii fashion caused and i am so glad it did!! Ive spent a long time researching different standpoints and opinions surrounding this aesthetic and i think that you really really covered it well!! I mosty clicked because i was skeptical but i am very pleased i was mistaken. :3
reading this made me very happy. i am always worried that the younger people grow up with these insane expectations and just dont know any better. because thats the new reality we live in right? I hope there is more people like you that have this way more healthy approach to fashion ❤
What really rubs me the wrong way is how normalised hypersexuality, SH and drug abuse are in this community, which is also full of minors. If I hear one more person call me a puritan for taking a stance against this, I'm going Columbine on the nearest anime store. 15yos should not be posting photos of sanrio plushes w captions like "thinking of him painting the inside of me", "I need to go to therapy (my dealer)" and 20something yo egirls shouldn't be cosigning it, but that's what's happening. Look into the Belle Delphine effect. Also, lots of young people think it's okay to vent to strangers on the internet, but as a matter of fact, you're sharing some really quite dark and vulnerable inner thoughts with an entire court of public opinion that doesn't actually care about you. That's what a personal diary is for. You're asking for people to bully you and expose you to exactly what triggers you, you're asking predators to groom you and hold sensitive information against you. Not only does making your life online isolate you from your actual community, it makes you a massive target. I speak from lived experience and will not be rebuked.
at this point whenever someone unironically uses the term "puritan" I just automatically assume they're either 15 years old or preying on 15 year olds💀
The amount of weird venting I run across on discord is completely unhinged and makes me so uncomfortable. Kids saying messed up stuff and the worst part is they will organize hate campaigns against mods if they step in and tell them to stop. Its the wild West out here man
This is victim-blaming to the greatest degree... minors and adults should be careful not to do things like list their triggers for strangers to see as they can misuse them, but also, no, they are not "asking for it" and no, not everyone can have a diary?! I couldn't even write some words on one page of a random notebook without being harshly questioned about it. Ironically, many feel safer and find more community online, especially when their families want to sweep CSA and such under the rug. The only thing they should do is put a warning on the blog and maybe mark it sensitive, but you have no right to demand victims not vent online...
As a kawaii/cutecore it pains me that *SOME* people who do cutecore are mean because to be cute you dont have to be mean. When someone wants to be cutecore being kind will make you fit on
I have been in this side of Tik Tok/general internet since 2022 (I was around 12-13)and still am it helped me find comfort in the mental shit I was dealing with at the time and for that I truly appreciate it no matter how "problematic" it is.
around 30yr old woman here that grew up basically chronically online and always having been interested in alternative fashion. (speaking goth, emo, visual kei, lolita). the problematic aspects of it have been around since that time and I think many people see the past with nostalgic glasses and pretend or forget that this was always around. And then shit on todays young people or society as if it was just recently a thing or a result of tiktok or whatever. I really understand what you are saying. And at the same time, having been through some shit, I encourage you to stay safe, especially with the things that will have a reach on you outside of the internet. Things can get pretty dangerous.
As a 2 Meter Tall guy, who stopped going to most Clothing Stores because nothing fits there, I can feel the pain of not fitting in clothes you want to wear cause of external factors.
33:43 "hey im a 14 year old girl that enjoys anime and wears cute clothes and doesnt like to go outside!" YEAH. MAN! as someone who WAS involved in edgy, hypersexual, anime adjacent culture when they were 11 to 15 (back in the good old 2000s), its honestly crazy to see the rise/resurfacing?? of this culture and these spaces online, and see them affecting more children nowadays. i always felt so alone in my experience of consuming lolicon WHEN I WAS THE AGE OF THE GIRLS DEPICTED IN IT, and not seeing anything wrong with it because i was young and naive... oh and """dating""" someone 6 years older than me 🙄 i still support children having freedom to use the Internet and freedom of self expression, and im glad that i found some of the things i did through being in those communities, but overall the kids who are going to be MOST affected by damaging content are going to be the ones who are already likely to be experiencing abuse, neglect, isolation, bullying, depression, etc in their real lives.
imma be honest every single "cutecore" person ive ran into online that has a sanrio pfp and bio full of sparkles and stuff... always end up being the most awful toxic people i've ever met 😭
@@ETCHEDUPBLOOD720 my honest advice is to just be genuinely nice to people, don't engage in drama or online arguments, don't be mean to people, it sounds like common sense right? but way too many people online have become comfortable with being toxic or rude to people because they can hide behind a cute avatar
i hate how when white people indulge in east asian pop culture and media, some even fetishising it, but only other POC are called out for engaging in it. I've only ever seen other white people asian fish whilst also shutting down POC for simply wearing more harajuku inspired fashion. The racism is really prominent in this scene and the culprits are usually only white people. Some seem to forget that they are engaging in east asian culture and are very odd about it:( it makes me uncomfortable. So many people sexualise east asian women and i really hate it as someone who is half east asian, half white. My irl friend (who is white) simultaneously insults douyin makeup, calling it ugly, but is still heavily influenced by it and elongates their eyes but when they do it yet see no issue. They have also admitted to asian fishing in cosplays and they find it funny??
I hear what you're saying, because it clearly comes from the heart, but I don't think you should correlate kawai and manga cosplay aesthetics with cultural appropriation (a fraught concept to say the least, if only because it often assimilates culture to genetics-based groups...). There's a clear back and forth between Japan, the US, other EA countries, and Europe. Being in Europe, US cultural trends are still foreign, often just as much as Japanese ones. There's a difference between cosplaying unrealistic characters, liking that aesthetic, and fishing/ being cringe by pushing snobbism to the point of trying to look like your target social model through extreme. The formers are a conversation that can be answered, the latter some sort of calcification of a power inbalance. I think the line is crossed when you treat something foreign as fiction instead of someone else's reality to be treated with respect.
@@coffic im not quite sure what you mean, i dont think engaging in kawaii fashion is cultural appropriation? /gen i just dislike how much racism is hurled at poc by white people for engaging in harajuku fashion as if they are not also taking interest in a culture that isnt their own. I think its fine to dress in harajuku fashion because its for everyone and its a form of cultural appreciation but i dont like the superiority some white people have in the subculture as if they are somehow different from POC, namely black people, in the same community.
As a member of the EGL and kawaii fashion community I watched this video fully expecting to be annoyed but it was very well researched and presented. Thank you for bringing up the issues of art theft and of the cutecore community and fast fashion suppliers renaming and rebranding something that has already been an active community for years. For years the J-fashion and kawaii community has had a thriving second hand market and has been very supportive of indie brands including those who cater to a diverse audience. Early Harajuku fashion was all about being resourceful and DIY-ing or thrifting your outfits. Although I understand that a lot of people wearing "cutecore" are kids and teenagers with not much money or knowledge, it is sad to see people turning to cheap fast fashion instead of doing some research and getting creative or supporting the existing brands. It's also upsetting to see people in the comments talking about it as a "microtrend" as if it's a throwaway trend or something that was just invented. Harajuku fashion has had a thriving worldwide community since the late 90s with its own culture, industry, music scene etc.
Having access to l@li content online was so directly damaging to me as a child. Predators absolutely use it to normalize their behaviour and make it seem normal to you. And I don’t think people realize just what that does to your brain as you’re transitioning into an adult who only values themselves for being a minor, it’s maddening just how commonplace it’s become
This and it’s frightening to see that there’s a growing movement of defenders online trying to garner overt acceptance for that type of content under the guise of “it’s just fiction.” Especially when you consider a lot of those defenders are probably closer to those characters’ ages than they are to being the age of a fully grown mature adult.
exactly, i cant believe people still dont understand how dangerous it is when its quite literally a breeding ground for predators to talk to little kids who dont know any better.
@@psychedelic1589seriously... I've seen kids as young as 8-9 call themselves lolicons/shotacons before and then most of (sometimes even ALL) the characters they like in that way are older than them. Shit is Mortifying
I'm really glad i found this video. I've been cutecore/kawaii since 2022 and I'm really glad this video was made so more people could learn about it. You explained everything so perfectly, I can't wait to watch some of your other stuff!! :3
Can't wait to see more longform content! The way u discuss things on tiktok is always so level headed and informative, it's super exciting to see you on TH-cam!
I’m soo happy addy is posting on TH-cam because i can’t count the amount of time i have binged watched all of her tik toks❤ keep posting long form videos!
omg, i was full on cutecore in 2022. (im now a microtrend final boss LMAOO) mother garden, mezzo piano, sugar bunnies, that one k-on blanket, you name it. it was a fun era but god was the bodyshaming so bad. if you didn't fit into literal childrens clothes people would make you feel bad about yourself
Honestly, cutecore sort of saved me in a way Due to circumstances out of my control, I had a bit of a Not-So Good childhood that left me with issues handling my money. But, after finding a cutecore unboxing compilation here on TH-cam, I found that I didn't need to buy stuff as much anymore. Watching those compilations gave me that same serotonin I got from buying stuff myself and it was FASCINATING. I do have a few cutecore stuff laying around my place, but just watching people have fun with the things they got excited to buy is honestly all I really needed Though. The sexism in this community is a little yikes, too. Men can like cute stuff, too, guys. Don't go on a rampage trying to tear them down just because they're not a woman
I would love if you did a deep dive on how every aesthetic has a name or how sticking “core” at the end creates a new aesthetic. Such as how people used to call scene just scene or “emo” but I’ve been seeing a trend where people are calling it “scenecore”. Your videos have been so interesting to watch as someone who’s been a collector of cute things since I was little. I’ve subscribed and can’t wait for more content!
18:49 THIS!!! This right here is like so important, I think the internet in general does not understand that accumulating stuff (decent quality) takes time
i"ve been collecting kawaii/cutecore clothes and decoration for a few years now and because of your videos TODAY for the first time ever i actually had the confidence to go outside in these clothes thank you very much i felt great!
yeah in my time with unrestricted internet access during early puberty, i definitely stumbled across loli/shotacon content, not being able to comprehend what i was looking at. i didnt understand why it was any different than the nsfw of adults, and it led me down gross paths. thankfully my brain didnt imprint on that content and i learned why it was all wrong before i could be groomed into a depraved fetish. its a really scary memory with adult hindsight just how easy it is for kids online to access nsfw content, esp illegal/immoral nsfw. I cant imagine just how easy it is for kids/young teens to find in this fandom, and thinking about how vulnerable they are makes it all the more horrifying.
I really enjoy the formatting of your videos so far, especially with how you go to the effort to credit the clips, etc. you use and how you explain context for folks who may not really 'get' it without talking down to them! I look forward to seeing what else you come out with :D Edit: I also really appreciate the sensitivity and care with which you approached the l0li side of things - as someone who was exposed to that kind of stuff at an unreasonably young age and had it affect me and how i perceived relationships well into my adult life, its not something that has a place in communities like this.
I’ve always called my style Kawaii instead of cutecore, I remember people used to tell me that cutecore was for white people such as myself while kawaii was for Asian people 😭
i would like to mention - as someone who was SUPER into this back in 2020 and its super super nostalgic to me - this was also called kawaiigoth at one point! because it had that mixture of cutesy vibes and spooky/horror elements - in case anyone wanted to find more stuff from this vibe esp if you're looking for stuff from that 2020 era
I'm not in any of these scenes or have much of a fashion sense at all, but you did a good job of explaining everything and teaching me about styles and cultures beyond my own. I look forward to future content. Keep up the good work.
Cutecore was a real big thing for me (still is to this day) but I remember being super into in 2020-2021. That was when I started drawing and posted art on tiktok. Cutecore was really popular and still is popular but alot of people have damaged it. Back then I remember seeing tiktoks with girls saying "I want him to kidnap me" or just putting themselves in dangerous situations or sharing personal things. Its sad because i love it but people tend to ruin it by being rude. I'm glad there are not many rude people anymore but it was very eventful during that time, I also forgot to mention. During that time of 2020-2021, there were also tiktoks with young girls holding older men's hands and titled "he's my daddy" or "I'd let him choke me" just making sexual and along with adding Cutecore onto it. So obviously young people (specifically 12-year-olds) they'll think it's cute and probably do it. Either way! I'm glad you spoke about cutecore and some if its drama it had🎀
I really wish cutecore wasn't problematic. It's so pretty. :( (edit: guys i am cutecore. I have cutecore accounts. I am not saying i dislike cutecore, or even avoid it. Some problematic parts are ok, or even things i kinda like!! But some are just not ok. Ok? :3)
to be honest, I embrace how problematic it is. most of the issues aren't that serious or big, all communities have their bad apples(although, who is considered a "bad apple" is highly subjective)
Currently in the Cutecore community since 2020, yeah because the base was problematic there are still some of it that lingers but the small community is now aware of the problems and definitely do not support any problematic stems from it. Thanks for going over this as this informs more of what the “base” was
17:48 isn’t this a similar phenomenon to the male focused ‘nerd’ trend of the 00s with the comic book figurines and funko pops? It runs the risk of becoming about who can spend the most on things they don’t need. Ultimately becoming the exact flavour of trying to one-up each other with capitalism that the nerd culture explosion was initially a criticism of. It started as guys who had been bullied for their interests in school banding together to appreciate what they loved and died as guys with too much money trying to one-up each other with the rarest comics in a depressing bragfest and alienating the next generation of guys that would’ve really benefitted from a community that accepts them.
It's similar to most geek based cultures - everything from anime to comics to video games to even sports, the more you have the more cool you are. It's easy to get sucked into things like this and end up with your entire personality JUST being that. Case in point, I personally lost myself in the anime figure community in my 20's and when I met a long distance friend he was surprised that I could sing along with western music. It kinda popped the bubble for me and allowed me to step back to figure out who I really was, thankfully in time for my 30's to come along where I started making enough money to be able to pay off my debts and re-align what I wanted. I still collect figures to this day, but I'm no longer going broke over it. It's a dangerous game in just about any community out there that has consumerism in the midst.

Then again, even I think Disney still is one of the most infamously imperialist conglomerates to ever exist, which is a cautionary merchandising tale onto itself. @@SlapstickGenius23 Oh yeah, Disney is absolutely wild. It's also wildly expensive these days. I remember when I was a kid my parents took me to Disney World on a family vacation as lower middle class people. You can't have a family and take them to any Disney parks now without selling your left kidney. It always baffles me how some people will go every single year and I often wonder how they manage it when it's so insanely expensive. I make more than my father did when he retired (very solid middle class) and I would never be able to justify those prices.
HI!! I'm someone who has indulged in this sort of style for 4 years, and I've been into kawaii/harajuku fashion since I was about 7!! I'm not gonna self-proclaim myself as an "expert" but I have a very huge love and knowledge spread for this topic and because im SO expressive about this topic constantly, I wanna give some insight and share to those who may have some questions or struggles!! I probably wont be talking back and fourth to comments especially cause I get very nervous but im glad ive decided to post this as a little info-read, I only come with good intentions to inform and smiles c: pls treat others the same!!
Since you mentioned sizing I’ll add my own personal experiences with mezzo piano and other similar clothing brands. For one, the shirts can fit larger compared to the bottoms most of the time since they have some stretch to them. For example I can sometimes even fit a 110cm as a cropped shirt but when it comes to bottoms usually a 150-160cm fits best. But with skirts the sizing is also super inconsistent since I’ve bought a 160cm skirt with a 28inch waist and another one with a 26inch waist. It can be kind of stressful shopping for skirts for that reason imo. Here’s a basic sizing guide based on my experience: (shirts) 110cm can sometimes fit an xxs-xs as a cropped shirt, same with 120cm but they can occasionally fit a s, 130cm is xxs-s, 140 is xxs to possibly a m but it would fit tight, 150cm is xs-m and 160cm is s up to a smaller large (it will be tight though). For shirts I wouldn’t buy anything under 130cm unless you’re very petit, 130cm can fit up to a small if it is made from a stretchy material (avoid denim if you want stretch), 140cm fits xxs-xs if it has no stretch but if it’s stretchy probably a small, 150cm is usually xs if it has no stretch but could probably fit a m if it’s stretchy and 160cm is a small if it has no stretch but possibly up to a smaller large if it’s stretchy. Shorts will fit smaller since they have to fit at a certain spot in your body and will probably sit more at the upper hip rather than at your waist. Hope this helps someone!
oh this is definitely a big help!! unsure about sizing stuff, but I agree with all of the points above, then again I fit a size 160 in bottoms (shorts, skirts) but a 150 in tops? Ive been wanting to try buying a 140 top (because the others I have are 150 and fit very well) but I dont like cropped shirts, yet like you said; I think itll just be very fitted on a size M? It can be a really confusing experience, I was never aware about the skirt thing! I know that some denim skirts have waist ajusters but yes, the ones that arent denim just have bands that are a little strectchy? which sadly those are the kinds of skirts that I look to buy- not a super big fan of the denim but I do have a few of them, im pretty petite but have big thighs so I get extra worried about the skirts with shorts built-in and if the shorts will fit, let alone the skirt. this opened my eyes sm?? ty!!
8:53 is madoka considered cutecore than?the show has a lot of psychological horrol elemennts while also having cute artstyle and some other elements too
I'm part of the cutecore community, but I've also had an interest in kawaii and especially lolita fashion since ~2019 and done plenty of research on kawaii culture and harajuku, so like I know the origins of various cutecore elements from japan, and I'm sure a lot of people in the community also do. so I don't think the aesthetic is really whitewashed so much as it's a compilation of different elements from kawaii culture. I do agree though, there are definitely problematic elements, and I especially feel the whole normalizing eds thing, since even though I'm at a healthy weight I find myself comparing my body to a lot of far smaller people in the community, and I know I wouldn't be able to fit any of the cute mezzo piano clothes. the l0lic0n stuff is also really gross, I kind of understand why it's so popular since the characters are usually designed to be very cutesy with cute clothes but the source material is just disgusting, and I am very uncomfortable with the idea that it may very badly influence some teenagers.
1. great video thank you i'm pretty sure you're why i know anything about cosplay so thank you 2. always remember if you know how to sew you have power. you can add more fabric. you can get clothes to fit you. you can alter or add pre-existing things to an outfit. 3. omg there's a reason for age restrictions on sites! tumblr isn't FOR 12 year olds, instagram isn't FOR 14 year olds! of course kids are being negatively influenced by sites that they shouldn't be on! it's not the fault of the website, it's either of the kids or their parents!!
29 วันที่ผ่านมา
Yeah but also there's a little more to it? Like kids are always gonna wanna do things they aren't supposed to and lie about their age to get into them and it's the parents' responsibility to stop that but sometimes the websites themselves like don't do enough to crack down on the cases that do make it through. Obviously they can't figure out everyone who lies about their age to make an account or stop it but then there's shit like TH-cam letting inappropriate content farms slide and showing blatantly sexual ads to accounts it believes to be underage; like how much of a problem this is varies from website to website but a lot of the time it's a combination of the parents not doing enough to keep their kids from seeing things they aren't supposed to and the websites not doing enough to stop kids in general from seeing that stuff. But a lot of the responsibility does fall on the parents to stop kids from doing stuff like lying about their age. The only time I can really say it's the kid's fault is if they intentionally get into an adult space they aren't supposed to be in and then try to get the adults in trouble for it. I find it really concerning that the idea of "weaponizing their minority" would even appear in a person's mind, never mind actually doing it. This is more a thing with like teenagers than actual children but I think it's still a reflection of internet use at a young age damaging people, and there's not really much effort to actually stop the problem because most supposed counter measures only serve to hinder people trying to make mature content not meant to be seen by kids at all without actually stopping kids from seeing the real bad stuff. It's a pretty complicated situation and feel like not enough people understand the nuance of it
I literally just discovered cutecore this year and started collecting and can I tell you it’s so easy to get over it but I’ve been selling my stuff on Depop/mercari but I get over things within 2 weeks

I'm recovering from anorexia, but in the heat of my ed, I was on edtwt a LOT. Cutecore was such a common style and aesthetic in the community. I'm so glad you touched up on that detail though because it's not talked about and I feel like we should stop the ed and sh glorifying behaviors in the community.
In my experience as a cutecore enjoyer, cutegore was more made to categorize cutecore that had gore in it. Mainly done by people who solely wanted the cutegore aesthetic and people who solely wanted the cute parts of the cutecore aesthetic. (The former bc they wanted a more precise title to search after, the latter because they wanted to stay away from gore and horror in general.) I wouldn’t call cutecore a ‘transitional aesthetic’, tbh. It’s more of an aesthetic based on the concept of cute without any kind of rules or categories in it. The only real requirement cutecore has is just…cute. And maybe pink. And maybe Sanrio. For me, cutecore is just another aesthetic I like and fit into. Same as sweet Lolita, fairy kei, jojifuku, etc. when I get tired of all the rules aesthetics like Lolita have, I go to cutecore.

And the old 'it has a strain therefore it's now a hair dye shirt' loll
That's Consumerism for you
The thing about most of these fast fashion pieces is they fall apart SUUUUUUUPER quickly.

Cutecore is an umbrella term.
Yami kawaii 闇かわいいdoes fall under it same as many other fashion styles
There’s a core difference between aesthetic and fashion,
Aesthetic is your style as an entirety, fashion is a style of clothing you wear.
So many fashion styles will come under it
However it is a very westernised term, and personally I’d prefer people to atleast mention what fashion style is actually shown, some people say they are cutecore but then only posses the style Jojifuku which really pisses me off cause people get confused and only know the one term. Same as Kawaai/kawaiicore
Which means the same fucking thing
Please correct me if I’m wrong
This is a autistic brain thinking
@@PlxsteredH34rt You're right that aesthetics go way beyond fashion, I'd say as a descriptor for purely the aesthetic, cutecore makes sense. However I feel like because these japanese subcultures predate the term cutecore (by at least a decade too mind you), it doesn't make much sense to use it as an umbrella term when talking about fashion. Again it's almost delegating these subcultures with their own extensive history to fall under this fairly recent westernised term.

( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

hii!! im a 16 year old kawaii-fashion lover and i was definitely warped into the cutecore fashion some years ago.
Its the wild West out here man
@@strayiggytvthat's what venting channels in servers are for
@@AGK1999FE yeah but they don't do it there And even there you shouldn't give out full names and locations and shit
When someone wants to be cutecore being kind will make you fit on
The word kawaii has a COMPLETELY different meaning now than it did before
I have been in this side of Tik Tok/general internet since 2022 (I was around 12-13)and still am it helped me find comfort in the mental shit I was dealing with at the time and for that I truly appreciate it no matter how "problematic" it is.
around 30yr old woman here that grew up basically chronically online and always having been interested in alternative fashion.
Yep one even called me a b*tch that should kms because i said that she shouldn’t romanticise bullying
Oh, really? 🤪😭
@@joeysaiyan I want to be cutecore/jojifuku and non toxic, but it's sad how people see us like this.
Don't forget the heavily edited Fluttershy pfp too :(
i hate how when white people indulge in east asian pop culture and media, some even fetishising it, but only other POC are called out for engaging in it.
/gen
i just dislike how much racism is hurled at poc by white people for engaging in harajuku fashion as if they are not also taking interest in a culture that isnt their own.
I've uninstalled tiktok recently so it's awesome to find you on here!
I loved this video and the way it talked about the issues and origins of cutecore! I’d love to see an extended video on 2020 bunny hat alt!
Absolutely
Shit is Mortifying

omg, i was full on cutecore in 2022. (im now a microtrend final boss LMAOO) mother garden, mezzo piano, sugar bunnies, that one k-on blanket, you name it. it was a fun era but god was the bodyshaming so bad. if you didn't fit into literal childrens clothes people would make you feel bad about yourself
Honestly, cutecore sort of saved me in a way
Due to circumstances out of my control, I had a bit of a Not-So Good childhood that left me with issues handling my money. But, after finding a cutecore unboxing compilation here on TH-cam, I found that I didn't need to buy stuff as much anymore. Watching those compilations gave me that same serotonin I got from buying stuff myself and it was FASCINATING. I do have a few cutecore stuff laying around my place, but just watching people have fun with the things they got excited to buy is honestly all I really needed
Though.

Such a well done video! Excited to see more long-form videos from you💓
yeah in my time with unrestricted internet access during early puberty, i definitely stumbled across loli/shotacon content, not being able to comprehend what i was looking at. i didnt understand why it was any different than the nsfw of adults, and it led me down gross paths. thankfully my brain didnt imprint on that content and i learned why it was all wrong before i could be groomed into a depraved fetish. its a really scary memory with adult hindsight just how easy it is for kids online to access nsfw content, esp illegal/immoral nsfw. I cant imagine just how easy it is for kids/young teens to find in this fandom, and thinking about how vulnerable they are makes it all the more horrifying.
Not Amy losing it at the background
I really enjoy the formatting of your videos so far, especially with how you go to the effort to credit the clips, etc. you use and how you explain context for folks who may not really 'get' it without talking down to them! I look forward to seeing what else you come out with :D
Edit: I also really appreciate the sensitivity and care with which you approached the l0li side of things - as someone who was exposed to that kind of stuff at an unreasonably young age and had it affect me and how i perceived relationships well into my adult life, its not something that has a place in communities like this.

I love cutecore! I only learned about it in late 2023 but I’ve loved it ever since and it really made me fine out my true love for so many stuff!
Im a teenager who's been heavily into cute core for about a year now and i think this video was my wake-up call. Thank you, Addy

to be honest, I embrace how problematic it is. most of the issues aren't that serious or big, all communities have their bad apples(although, who is considered a "bad apple" is highly subjective)
It’s not inherently problematic

@@gumity I was once a Disney kid until I turned 13. Then again, even I think Disney still is one of the most infamously imperialist conglomerates to ever exist, which is a cautionary merchandising tale onto itself.
Thanks to its own army of permanently trademark and merch-crazy lawyers, its rather loose takes on tales like Snow White and Cinderella have long become the main variants to show, tell and parody in much of the world.

I know that some denim skirts have waist ajusters but yes, the ones that arent denim just have bands that are a little strectchy? which sadly those are the kinds of skirts that I look to buy- not a super big fan of the denim but I do have a few of them, im pretty petite but have big thighs so I get extra worried about the skirts with shorts built-in and if the shorts will fit, let alone the skirt. this opened my eyes sm?? ty!!
This is just genuinely such a good video! imo you worded everything so smoothly and the flow is great. congrats on your first vid by the way!! ❤
Oh my god I spent so long looking for your channel THIS VID DIDNT DISAPPOINT!!!
8:53 is madoka considered cutecore than?the show has a lot of psychological horrol elemennts while also having cute artstyle and some other elements too
i would say definitely yes!!:3
I watched the entire video! 36 minutes well spent 😂
4:10 oh i really like that hair in the photo!
IVE LOOKED U UP ON YT SO MANY TIMES HOPING YOU HAD LONG FORM CONTENT THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!
1. great video thank you i'm pretty sure you're why i know anything about cosplay so thank you
2. always remember if you know how to sew you have power. you can add more fabric. you can get clothes to fit you. you can alter or add pre-existing things to an outfit.
3. omg there's a reason for age restrictions on sites! tumblr isn't FOR 12 year olds, instagram isn't FOR 14 year olds! of course kids are being negatively influenced by sites that they shouldn't be on! it's not the fault of the website, it's either of the kids or their parents!!
It's a pretty complicated situation and feel like not enough people understand the nuance of it
I'm so glad you went long form also

I'm so glad you touched up on that detail though because it's not talked about and I feel like we should stop the ed and sh glorifying behaviors in the community.
In my experience as a cutecore enjoyer, cutegore was more made to categorize cutecore that had gore in it. Mainly done by people who solely wanted the cutegore aesthetic and people who solely wanted the cute parts of the cutecore aesthetic. (The former bc they wanted a more precise title to search after, the latter because they wanted to stay away from gore and horror in general.)
I wouldn’t call cutecore a ‘transitional aesthetic’, tbh.

I have eczema (aka type of dry skin) if I wear a top that’s mostly made out of polyester especially if I sweat in it from a workout/hot weather the skin on my back gets irritated
I like fashion, accessories, and the overall aesthetic but the fandom bro.. and also people sometimes call it "japanesecore" like wtf?..
great video Addy!!! So stoked to see you making long form stuff because tiktok hurts my brain lol
I'm 8 seconds into the video and am already so obsessed with the NGO wallpaper in the backgroundddd ( ; w ; )
UR SO PRETTY ❤
its unfortunate how hardcore is often asocieted with metal instead of EDM/Hard Dance Music good example would be trancecore originally it was a subgenre of happy hardcore/hard dance but instead it got marked as metal with synth same with dubcore originally a sub genre of happy hardcore but is marked as dubstep and metalcore instead calling it metalstep
Are you aware of hardcore music that started in the late 70s? It has zero to do with dance music. It's also not metal. Both of those associations are completely absurd.
@@Aster_Risk hardcore as a music genre involved in so many directions and each decade defines a new genre/style that was describe as hard music 70s was punk 80s was electro body music or industrial and 90s was techno
I hope uthoria makes polyster soon because as someone with sensory processing disorder its so hard to find stuff i can actually wear (basically anything but cotton n denim)
