We are in the midst of a new chapter for Pride.
Throughout history, traditional Pride events have provided the LGBTQ+ community with a platform to proudly showcase our visibility. The passion, determination, and talent expressed by members of our community, in light of progress made and challenges placed on the LGBTQ+ community, has allowed us to expand the role Pride plays and how we are able to experience it.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, we will not be able to celebrate a traditional Pride this June. However, the Capital Pride Alliance is actively working to create unique and inspiring opportunities this Pride month in place of our usual festivities.
In addition, with Fall 2021 looking more promising, we will work with the city to identify the safest ways to celebrate and create new traditions this October. We hope that this new celebration will include special exhibiting opportunities, one of a kind programming, and a new take on the traditional parade.
The Capital Pride Alliance is determined to continue its award-winning programs developed in 2020, such as Pride Talks and the web-series Pride in the City, in addition to launching the first ever Pride Summit - #StillWeLead, at the end of February. Perhaps most importantly, we are planning to bring our community back together for an unforgettable, large-scale Pride in 2022, and have set our eyes on 2025 when we will celebrate 50 years of Pride in the Nation’s Capital.
To meet the evolving needs of our community and survive these challenging times in an ever-changing landscape, we must reshape how our organizations and businesses function, and we collectively commit to: ensuring that inclusivity and accessibility are values that are expected and nurtured, in order to promote equitable and welcoming communities, organizations, and resources in our nation; supporting local LGBTQ+ organizations, initiatives, and businesses; working together to strive for unity within the LGBTQ+ community.
In addition, the Capital Pride Alliance commits to: continuing to fulfill our core responsibility of organizing and supporting Pride events that ignite lasting connections and provide critical visibility; building on existing and new partnerships to make the necessary improvements to the way that we operate, in addition to exploring the potential consolidation of local services and programming with other groups to maximize resources available and expand access to services; developing new programming to bring more visibility to the LGBTQ+ community.
#StillWe must stay safe to Celebrate Pride 2021. In the coming weeks, we will be able to provide the community with a more detailed understanding of what to expect for 2021.
Our community’s success depends on all of us!
