THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR. A project where you make the actual mechanism, it’s really the effort you put in that’ll do it!! thank you for some tips
This was pretty cool to see! Interesting point about some notes being duplicated; I like heavy metal/hard rock music which frequently has the same note played repeatedly, often in the form of 16th notes or even triplets sometimes. So if one were to make a music box play a heavy metal song and they wanted it to sound right, duplicating notes may be absolutely essential!
This was a very informative video, I like that you included the process of figuring out the reason behind the double notes. The jokes were also pretty funny! Subbed!
There's a beautiful girl in my life and i love her, i want to win her heart. I wanted to get her a music box with a song, but i couldn't find any music box with the song, so I'm doing what i can to make it for her. Wish me luck.
I’m glad that I finally found the kind of video I was looking for, I’ve just been getting How it’s made videos. Sadly, I can’t do this because I lack the equipment, but thanks anyway!
What's wrong with the whole punch DIY music boxes? You said this is "way better", why do you feel that way? To me, it should be worth noting that a punch card/punch strip has obvious advantages over a cylinder: the length of your song is not limited by the size of the box, therefore your song could technically be endless. With a cylinder, a longer song requires a larger cylinder, which therefore requires a larger box to accommodate it. Also, punch cards move in a linear motion rather than a rotational motion, so you don't have to hear the song being repeated over and over again (one of the reasons some people might potentially dislike most music boxes). I suppose a disadvantage might be that the amount of paper that's already gone through the machine will end up sticking out, which could eventually lead to a tripping hazard if the strip of paper is long enough.
I really like this project, it’s crazy how nice it looks and I like the idea of a jazz music box But I think the accuracy of the notes is a little off. Not in the music box tuning sense, but just what you actually sequenced. I’m pretty sure the opening notes are F then C# to G then C#, followed by a major 3rd of F A A, F A A. All in all though, it sounds really good :)
Hey Eric, I would also love to make a custom music box myself, but I don't have the equipment that allows me to cut and craft with metal. So my idea was: 'Can I make the dots with a soldering iron as well?' I have bought a music box and I will carve off the dots from the cylinder. Now I wanted to use a soldering iron and a bit to Tin to add the dots onto the empty cylinder. Do you think that'll work out? Or do you have tips for me?
I wouldn't rely on just solder. Apparently Reuge (the famous Swiss music box manufacturer) claims to coat their cylinders in a secret-composition resin. Since solder is lead-based, it is soft and would likely wear down over time, but possibly solder dots coated with CA glue would work?
"Preferred libation"? Very AvE ;-) I'm using this fantastic information to make a custom music box to fit within a Lament Configuration puzzle box! Thanks.
Hi Eric, I would like to build a customized music box. I found your video so I was wondering if You can help to manufacture the cylinder (drum) and comb based on a given size. Otherwise, if you know someone. Thank you very much!
Hey Eric this is amazing. I have been making music box songs with those paper music boxes kits for a few years. My dream is to be able to make a music box with replaceable cylinders of my own original music. I already have the music, what I don't have is any of the equipment featured in your vid. To your knowledge, would any of this be repeatable without the computer or lathe?
The music box parts were pulled out of this thing on amazon: www.amazon.com/Sunshine-Engraved-Birthday-Christmas-Valentines/dp/B07QQ14L9V/ref=sr_1_3?crid=KXK17J403IWR&dchild=1&keywords=music+box&qid=1606463648&sprefix=music+box%2Caps%2C280&sr=8-3 There are several avaible, they are all the same. I need someone who can make me one of these! cant find the music box with the song i need for a gift for grieving. Plz help if you or anyone u know can do that!
Totally! There is a video by a channel called Random Prototypes that shows just this, even going so far as to generate the stl for the cylinder directly from the desired notes with a script. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/Hx4FuogXTyk/w-d-xo.html
This is an amazing video! Ive been searching for something like this for some time. Do you think the tune of the final product was altered due to the length of the pins you made? I am trying to replicate a similar result to what you've accomplished here.
Hello, I'd like to include a 5~10s segment of your video in my future video (with the name of your channel and link to your video). I made a different method for building the cylinder but would like to reference your method of adding weight to the comb to modify the tone of the notes. Do you agree?
@@EricThornton24 Thanks, I have now published my video : th-cam.com/video/Hx4FuogXTyk/w-d-xo.html In short, I used a 3D printer for produce the cylinder. It may be slightly lower quality that your method but requires less tools. I linked your video at the end to explain how people can modify the notes by adding weight as you did, and said them to watch your video if they want more detail.
@@EricThornton24 Thanks. I think your method can produce more solid cylinder (maybe the plastic would start to degrade if played many times) and slightly cleaner sound, but require more work and equipment. Re-weighting the teeth like you did is definitely something that would be necessary for many songs.

The knowledge I was looking for, I have finally found it. Thank you for sharing it.
Well done you. I needed to be reminded of that song
The jokes in this are exquisite 😂 thank you for experimenting for us. Now I know I probably shouldn't make my own barrel for an existing music box

Hey quick question, how did you screw the instrument into the box? Did you need to drill pilot holes in the box first?
How do you only have 36 subs?? This is gonna blow up I know it haha. Awesome!
