I still have his book which I first read over 30 years ago. As a retired Game Ranger and author of 3 books on wildlife conservation in South Africa, I must say that listening to John in these videos, confirms my initial opinion. He was an ethical hunter with a deep empathy, knowledge and respect for the quarry. His understanding of the environment and its conservation was beyond reproach and he was an excellent marksman. Airguns have progressed in leaps and bounds since his hey day. However, IMO the ethics of airgun hunting per se has retrogressed. Seems it's more about power, slugs the "pop" and exploding feathers and flesh at nonsensical ranges, where wounding or maiming inevitably occurs. So, coming from someone who spent everyday of his working life with a .416 Rigby or .458 Win mag in the Land Cruiser or over my shoulder, I have this to say... Good on you Brits with your sub 12fpe limit. Its taught you to place your shots carefully at sensible ranges. Something l'm sure John would've been proud of. RIP
@10:37 "Aw well Fred, you lived a good and villainous life I'm sure." John had such an eloquence about him.
I spent hours and hours watching this man’s videos and reading his books and articles.
RIP JD.
