    We raise red and blue heelers. I have read that the dog uses the tail for a counterbalance with real sharp changes in direction. I've owned and worked heelers for 35 years. Never had a tail stepped on or crushed. I think people do it for looks. We dock tails when the new owners ask us to. There is a dog called the stumpy tailed cattle dog that resembles a heeler but naturally has no tail. Aussies have longer hair then their cousins the heeler so maybe it would be good to keep the dingleberries off.

I just watched a video of a lady docking a miniature schnauzers she put a clamp on the tail then got scissors and oh my gosh please stop doing that. Thank you for posting a very Humane tail docking video. It's the way I did it with my Cocker's my sister would hold them and I would clip the tail if we did it on day three or four we put one future in it. Most of our puppies didn't make a sound but we did use mayo surgical scissors. I just have two questions, have you ever had any puppies die from this procedure? I'm in Lakewood, Colorado and haven't been able to find local vets that will do this for the tail and dew claws. There was vet that would do the tails, dew claws and ears. He did our dogs ears for a good 25 years but he retired and deserved to so, he was fairly old when he retired. I had a boxer give me a litter back in the mid 80's and there was no problem finding a vet to do the dew claws and tails. I have only had male boxers after the female that whelped that littler died and she lived 13 years that is pretty good for boxers. Now I have an 8th month old male boxer puppy that so far has outstanding confirmation and he is really smart and obedient with champion blood lines. I have put a downpayment on a female pup and I plan on breeding the two. So thanks to this video and a few others I probably will do the docking of the tails and dew claws myself. I have no problem with a vet doing that should I be able to find one. And my second question is; have you ever done boxer puppies?

    • @ricosplace2
      @ricosplace2  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for watching, I have never lost a puppy from docking, it's such an easy procedure. I have never done a boxer, only Australian shepherds, mine are purebred but not registered, so I really don't worry about the exact length of the tail. Aussies are easy because the long hair basically covers the tail if I do it to short or long. Let me know if I can help in any way

    • @heidigomez001
      @heidigomez001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of clints want things done a specific way which wouldn’t be a problem however people request certain things then decide to cancel on said puppy, making it practically impossible for breeders to find a replacement home therefore that’s most breeders choose to do what’s standard to that breed unless the client is prepared to pay in full as soon as the puppy is born ( non-refundable ) .The client would need to choose a puppy immediately and that is extremely difficult for clients and breeders, breeders prefer to wait until the puppies have gotten older before allowing clients choose. Another important factor is your position on the waiting list therefore a client may need to wait for a future litter allow them to have first pick.

    What do you think about banding the tail. I'm not for that for a number of reasons. 1. It cause prolonged pain. 2. That it doesn't work then you have a deformed tail and a vets usually charge a hefty fee to correct it, if you can find a vet to correct it. 3. It takes to long. The tails I've seen on here that were banded successfully do look good.

    • @ricosplace2

      I have never had an issue with alot of bleeding, make sure you dock in the first two days. You can buy a sulfur drug to dip the tails in to stop any bleeding, you can spray the tails with an antiseptic spray, Blue Cote is a brand I use. My female has always been a good mom and keeps everything clean. The one year I dipped and sprayed the tails the mom did not like the taste of the medicine so I don't use it anymore. It is important to dock in the first two days, the third day at the latest, do not cut the tails after three days. If you do not feel confident, don't do it!! Good luck, let me know how it goes

    • @ricosplace2

      Hi, Let me start with at 1 or 2 days old they do Not really bleed, you can dip the tails in corn starch and mom usually will clean the pups up pretty good. At that age there really isn't much discomfort, I am not going to say they don't feel any pain. My opinion on tail vs no tail, I feel like if people are going to pay a lot of money for a Jack Russel they want it to look like a Jack Russel. It has been a pretty controversial topic about how many dogs actually lose their tails to cows. What I personally believe, is that the dog uses its tail for so many purposes, including balance when running, expressing emotions, and has even been proven to be used when interacting with other dogs. The reason that dogs naturally have a lighter color underneath their tail, is so that they can flag down other dogs and ultimately reflect how they are feeling. @@ricosplace2 It went more or less without a hitch. The easiest and yet the most nerve-wracking thing I've done in a while. My original tool, even being sharp enough to shave my fingernail took two attempts, then I went to plan B which was a large set of fabric shears that cut you just looking at them. They worked perfectly and instantly. Tiny yelp from 1 only because my helper was squeezing too hard out of nervousness and it was just a bead of blood on the tip that smeared on the fleece I placed all 4 in one at a time. I ended up dabbing neosporin on the tip before letting 'mom' around them and within 2 minutes everything was back to normal and they were all fast asleep.

    Thanks for the info! I know a lot of people may think it's cruel but think about it...we circumcise baby boys at 2 days old with very little anesthetic for mostly cosmetic purposes so that's something to think about. I am a nurse and have assisted with more circumcisions than I can count and it is WAY worse than docking a pup's tail. Do you just leave their dewclaws? or do you cut them off too?

    Since not all individual pups in any given litter is guranteed to be of breed standard worthy of showing or have the talent to be out working actual physical livestock herds, where tail docking in either show or working livestock herds has its place, my thoughts are A: if the docked tail look is what is disired, why not just go for those breeds that have naturally short or no tails to begin with, if the former is desired, would the already short tail be docked to be even more short? B : If tail docking comes into play with for show/registration purposes, keeping in mind not all individual pups in any given litter will be of breed standard furthering onto a show career or the talent to go out and work livestock, why dock all pups tails in the litter? Why not select a few potential showdogs at least, dock their tails, keep the rest entire, de-sex and sell the rest when weaned or there after? Curious thats all as i thought tail docking only served a purpose for future show dogs and dogs that are actually working livestock not just for dogs who for whatever reason can't/won't be shown or go out and be a working livestock dog.
