If you are confident you can win the round without running out of hands, just think about how much money you would get at the end. Saving one extra hand would only give you a bonus $1, but the Delayed Gratification joker gives $2 for each discard at the end of the round if none are used. That is a total of $8 in value from not using discards as opposed to a $1 value by using discards to save one hand.
pro tip: If you need to discard you can just add random stuff to the hand you play. So if you play a pair you can put three other cards in there as a defacto discard
Great strat to cycle through cards more effectively! Note that card effects which are triggered on discard won't be triggered when soft discarded when playing a hand. For instance, you don't want to play a purple seal card because you lose out on the tarot card.

It was also killing me inside watching him not throw extra cards into the pot for extra chips and bonuses since you can play up to 5 cards each time... he was def missing out on that and it probably cost him that last round.
As someone who has played a lot of Balatro, it hurt to watch. But I can't wait to see where Matt gets to in the future with this. And for the love of all that is holy, take the Hermits in the early stages of the game!

Given that you were going in blind on this, I would actually say you performed quite well for your first run. Your main issue is underestimating the power of money from interest (and money in general), but kudos for leaning into the red card mult skipping!

So rather than "negative is always worth it," I would give a more qualified "it's usually worth picking up a negatie joker, for Temperance value if nothing else, but you have to be judicious about it."

Two more thing for clarification: One, vouchers are permanent upgrades that effect the rest of your run. They are not single-use consumables. Two, there is a big different between +Mult and xMult and it is something that new players miss all the time. +Mult is just a red number, whereas xMult is a red box around a white number. +Mult ADDS that number to your final multiplier, whereas xMult MULTIPLIES your final multiplier by that number.
Yeah, I misunderstood that my first several runs and even sold off a Baron Joker because I didn't think "x1.5 mult for every King in your hand" was good. And, if that had been a +, I'd have been right.
The dna joker actually means: if your first hand of the round only has 1 card then create a permanent copy of that card you were holding whilst still retaining all the special attributes like foil or glass or seals that the original card had 15:52
Here’s some tips I had to learn on my own: Flushes score very well. If you don’t have pairs or anything, go for the flush. A flush 5 card hand (flush house, flush 5, flush straight etc.) score much higher than their unflushed counterparts. Save discards by playing bad cards with your
5 minutes in and I can already tell RCE's not a poker player. He missed a straight at 5:00 and discard half of it. Also missed 2 pair and a pair in the hands before that. This is gonna be fun!

You can always play 5 cards even if they don’t all score. Just note that with high card even if you have a fancy foil+mult 9 but also play a plain 10 it’ll only score the 10 since it’s higher.

There is interest in this game so saving money up until 25 5 extra money per round because you aquire interest per 5 buck you have until 25. Mult from jokers mostly gets added to the score at the end of the calculation so multiplicetive jokers multiply the score from the hand that might be upgraded by planet cards and upgraded poker cards. Anyway I won't swamp you with all the info there is to know it's fun to find out for yourself and form your own strategy. In the settings there is an colour blindness setting it only makes all the suits there own coller plus in that menu you can customize the look of the face cards this can help you play flushes and not make mistakes between spades and clubs in playing flushes Wich is the easiest hand to play at the start. I'd love to see you learn and get better at this game I love your content keep up the great work.

I can't believe Matt gave up a god tier combo for the Jokers he had a skipjoker and a non-skip joker he could have had together meaning he always has increasing multipliers no matter what
quick tip: x mult and + mult are two different things and play a very important role in the game. this is where you manage the order of the joker or the hand you want to play (by dragging it). make sure to place x mult at the end (right side), so it multiplies after the mult number is already big.
This is a pretty unique play through, where the person who knows the least about the game is the creator XD I genuinely find it insane you have not come across balatro at all. That is mental :D

Just wait til you learn you can get point scores like 5.683e13! Also, you don't actually have to unlock everything, you can just go into the player profile and have it unlock everything (though you won't get any more achievements if you do so). I think it's a great option for people who just want to go nuts and enjoy themselves without going gold stake. You can also change the cards to be higher contrast, ie, it'll make the clubs blue and diamonds yellow, much easier to tell the suits apart

Also don’t be fooled, there are jokers and enhancements like the glass card that give xmult (it multiples your mult instead of adding), so you would want that in the back for your joker deck, so it adds first and then you multiply it all at the end. Also also, there are no penalties for discarding, you should 99% of the times use discards. There is a penalty for playing a hand, you get 1 less quid for each hand used each round, and lastly there is interest. You get $1 for each $5 you end the round with
I'm only playing dave the diver now, it's great. If a game is as recent as like 1.5-2yrs ago, I still think it's pretty new. I spent a lot of time playing on a craptop so I've gotten well used to only playing old games. Balatro is still pretty new to me

I'm only playing dave the diver now, it's great. If a game is as recent as like 1.5-2yrs ago, I still think it's pretty new. I spent a lot of time playing on a craptop so I've gotten well used to only playing old games. Balatro is still pretty new to me

If you're using hands to save discards, you can play cards that don't score in order to draw more cards from your deck.
