I use either it or the arbalest depending on the build, arbalest is more versatile for sure.

It would be just an upgrade to your build, the spear fragment wont compromise anything else. The fragment is what makes the spear of the church boss so op since it deals a lot of damage and tears groups apart. Its an item that you use with the square button
If you give the covenant items to the statue you will also get an item that improves your defenses and gives you six of those things that follows the enemies instead of five
alright then, I have been a member of the spear church for sometime myself and it's awesome, though the summons are few and far between. funny enough my very first encounter to the boss was a player that was AFK and was called Gandalf the Grey. it confused the hell out of me.
