    Puzzles should be thematic and drive the narrative forward. Also using derivatives of simon says, mastermind, etc is a sure way to break immersion and have enthusiasts spend more time meta gaming than actually playing.

      Not always, I use Simon Says in my elevator where the sequence is shown on the floor button panel and it fits perfectly into theme. I also have a tangram game which fits great into a bar themed room (it turns on a "fake" tv after solving).
