In This Part :
By the end of this unit, the student should be able to:
1. Explain the metallic bond.
2. Differentiate between metals and nonmetals.
3. Describe bronze alloy.
4. Differentiate between the properties of each of the acids and
the alkalis.
5. Recognize pH and its relation with acidity and basicity.
6. Describe the properties of the salts.
7. Distinguish between acids, alkalis and salt solutions by using
chemical indicators.
8. Recognize a profile of the scientist Soren Sorensen.
Metallic Bond
The crystal lattice
of copper metal
Metallic bond
The attraction force between the positive metal ions and the negative valence
electron cloud which surrounds them.
Some physical properties of metals are attributed to (due to) the fact that their atoms
bind together through metallic bonds. The metallic bond is responsible for the metals
hardness and their high melting points. As the number of valence electrons in the metal
atom increases, the strength of its metallic bond also increases, consequently,
the metal is harder and its melting point is higher
