This album was a treat for longtime roc fans, I love the rosebud callbacks on the album and his flow on street magic is really similar to something off RR2.. the most freaky flow
"Necklace with the big stones, huh, It's like a cold plunge, Everything below the throat go numb, Poke holes in your coconut with the ghost gun, You're not supposed to go ghost on the plug" - Marci this line definitely gave me MF DOOM vibes 🤌🏾
Avaa. Professor Skye, it’s gonna be a special day once you start doing retro reviews on the past projects of MF DOOM, Mach-Hommy, billy woods, and Roc Marci.
I am so impressed that you have only heard The Elephant Man's Bones, Marciology, and THE SKELETON KEY, and have deduced that Roc Marciano is one of the greatest to ever do it. Wholeheartedly agree with you. I love this record. That "all my ten fingers are blue" line makes me think they've got ice. He did mention something along those lines in another song. That passage with him not wanting his ego stroked despite the freaky flow is so sick and it only clicked when you repeated it. this is an easy 9-9.5/10 for me. Knock It Off is honestly unbelievable, even for musicians of this calibre.
@@alexsolli6680 I was at the office when I first heard it and I almost exclaimed "oh shiiiit!!". thank goodness I was able to keep that in. that track is out of this world.
ROC MARCIANO is the ONLY reason I still listen to Hip Hop! In 2010/2011 I looked around me and saw that rap music had de-evolved into a vapid, degenerate corporate wasteland (P-Diddy Bling & Dirty South crap, rise of mumblecore & autotune garbage, Drake, Lil Jon, etc.) so I left Hip Hop and started listening to exclusively to African/Asian/Middle Eastern music and old Jazz. Then in 2019, somehow the algorithm sent me Roc Marciano's Behold A Dark Horse. I couldn't believe my ears. Marciano and his Griselda crew associates have made this era an Underground Golden Age! We are in the middle of another Golden Age because of this genius.
From the professor did that mach hommy album back in the day still can't get enough of his reviews ... the choices of albums he reviews is the same albums I love ... keep up the good work really nice thoughts
AVAA I feel like Roc just really wanted to rhyme something with “Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf” in Rauf and ALC’s beat on this song is frickin ridiculous. I’ve never heard a sample curse before lol
AVAA, this is album is just two amazing figures of hip hop making hip hop, a truly amazing way to end a great year for hip hop. Also, i gotta say i love the cover art, might be one of my favs this year
Roc’s just ill with the wordplay and Alchemist just digs for dope records and samples and that could be from anywhere…another unexpected drop and pleasant surprise as well.
(Professor just take 1 week and run through the whole discography,) Monday: Marcberg Tuesday: Reloaded Wednesday: Marci Beaucoup Thursday: Rosebudd's Revenge & RR2: The Bitter Dose Friday: Behold A Dark Horse Saturday: Marcielago Sunday: Mt. Marci (We can tell you genuinely rock with Roc & you're missing out!)
@@krisnaga91 Obviously, I wanted to add "Kaos" to the list "Mr. Oh, You Forgot One, and I Got You", along with "The Pimpire Strikes Back", "Greneberg", "Strive EP", "The Prequel", "Blame Kansas", & the 5 albums where he produced the entire project for Stove God Cooks, Flee Lord, Bronze Nazareth, Jay Worthy, & Therman Munsin, but as you can clearly see, I was working with a theme of it being 1 album every day for 1 week, which barely left me enough room to squeeze in all his SOLO STUDIO ALBUMS.. Given more time without the worry of overwhelming him, I would have gladly added the DJ Muggs-produced "Koas" along with every other project here.. Hell, while we're at it, we should add "Strength & Honor", "Knock Out Blows", "UN or U Out", & "World Domination: The Mixtape" as well..
Professor Skye, when you get time, make it a priority to listen to Marcburg and Reloaded first and when you do, listen to it from a point of reference as if Griselda, earl swearshirt and none of the other current underground rap scene was there yet.
Peace as a reporter of new renaissance hip hop / invisible renaissance i believe you have to study the renaissance so you should go back to roc marciano's discography we would love to hear your thoughts / analysis. AVAA
Every time you say "canal" I hear Wiki from Ratking shouting "CANAL, CANAL!" -- You probably missed that band (2014) but you should DEFINITELY listen to So It Goes. IMO the best NY album of the 2010s. AVAA
AVAA! a couple Alchemist collab mixtape recommendations: ‘Covert Coup’ by Curren$y & The Alchemist (2011) and ‘No Idols’ by Domo Genesis & The Alchemist (2012). Also: ‘Rare Chandeliers’ by Action Bronson & The Alchemist (2012) - that last one’s not on streaming.
Listen to DOOM albums Professor-Youre already well cultured enough-but the mastery of tragic comedy that is DOOM’s genius that Roc and him both emulate. DOOM’s originality though is unmatched-pure brilliance
Not sure if this is the right place to put this but I just want to see if others are struggling with this. I’ve loved Roc for a few years, but after listening to him again recently after a while, I’ve found myself much less capable of putting aside his misogyny. It seems his misogyny is so aggressive, at a level beyond most others. His lines on chopstick sealed the deal in this regard for me: “Good pimps wonderin' where your hooker went (Where she go?) Follow the footprints, might have to look a bit Like fish, I put my hooks in the bitch, she clipped, it don't matter how good she could swim We gon' pull a M out her pussy lips, that's how the cookie split We finna get magical cookie rich” This is just so vile, I’m struggling to understand 1) how someone can bring themselves to say it and 2) how people can stomach listening to it. It’s just tough because as a hip hop lover I’m in love with Rocs music and masterclass rapping, but disgusting lyrics like the lines I quoted make me less interested in continuing to listen. Just wondering if anyone else can relate/what people think about this
The beats were weird but the bars were there. It's clear that Marci wants to experiment more and this time Al is also leaning into that. Maybe the third time they'll come stronger.
@-47- hopefully cos the first record was way better than this and even that had like "some" bangers I would love for roc Marciano to rap hard hitting beats again, he just doesn't seem as hungry anymore
@MrMongoslade24 I appreciate this concur cos if I say it people say am a contrarion cos it's the alchemist and he can do no wrong but yeah the beats weren't good

By the way, Roc Marciano has one of the best Christmas songs ever. It’s called Wolfing Down, with Nicholas Craven

I prefer Roc over Roc beats but Alc is a close second.

I think the beat from Chopstick was done more justice on Your Old Droog’s album that Al produced. Oddly enough, Roc is the feature on the track.
that track was produced by ohbliv - very similar beats for sure but not the exact same
what song was it by YOD ??
