I have a B16 - I’m having a hard time paddling it solo. Going to Quetico this fall and I’m a little nervous. When I paddle solo it’s virtually empty. Will have another person and gear for the trip.
Hey Doug! When I first took my B16 for a ride was in Killarney for a four day trip. Never had it in the water and was a little weary of how it would paddle but soon as it was loaded it paddled really well solo. Maybe add some ballast to the front. Are you paddling solo from the bow in reverse?
Good to know that it paddles better loaded down. It will definitely have a ton of gear in it. I do paddle backwards when I’m alone. I will add more weight next time and see if that makes a difference. Thank you!!
Just ordered my first canoe a few weeks back (being made) and out off all the research and videos I’ve watched over the past 2 years, this is the first time I’m hearing about North Star. Very frustrating as the price point seems to be ok. Canoes are way overpriced but I guess that’s how the market works as I bought one lol.
@@Outdoorswithmikey Hey, Mike, would you mind expanding on that? For what it's worth, I heard that the B16 is very responsive, more so than the Nova Craft. Why would you go towards a Swift, their prospector, I assume? Or, even H2O's?
Do you prefer this to the swift prospector? Sorry if you get this question a lot, but why did you sell the prospector? Also when you solo, do you paddle from your bow or stern seat?
Don’t get me wrong. The Swift Prospectors are all great but in my opinion too expensive for what they are. Their solo version meh. Now with my B16 from NorthStar I like that it’s equivalent to Swift but 20% cheaper and their layups are better choices. I’ll solo 100% of the time from its bow or any other tandem boat.
Limited on how many canoes I can own and store. A 16 foot canoe is good overall workhorse for both solo and tandem with dog. Can’t and won’t solo with a dog. In my opinion only a solo boat isn’t wise unless you rarely if ever have a paddle partner.
Good vid. The very first (brief) scene was excellent, btw.
Hey, one follow up: is that a tattoo of a dog in a canoe? If so, I might have to steal the idea.
@paulhoy ah yes. It was taken from a photo of my late Portuguese water dog, Isla, who was my travel companion.

Time to book my next trip

It really is frustrating and the pandemic had a lot to do with prices today.
Hi Mike! after having the Northstar B16 for a but, would you buy it again, or choose something else? Thanks
Great question! I’m happy with my B16 but would probably go towards a Swift or go back to a P16 Nova Craft for durability in the end.

Why did the two of you each go solo in tandem canoes? Why not just go together in the same tandem, or get to solo boats?
