It only officially supports P01 and P59 computers but I think some guys are using it experimentally on newer ECM’s. I’ve only used it on Gen 3 stuff though.
No you’ll need something like the MSD 2 Step, the stock PCM isn’t capable of a two step function. I have a video about the MSD 2 step here: th-cam.com/video/NSsjds3DOoc/w-d-xo.html
Hey good morning. This is YourBoyEric again from Southern California again. I have a quick but important question for you about Universal Patcher. Turning off the MIL doesn't mean that a particular item has been disabled, if not how do I disable a particular item such as everything in relation to the engine because I'm using the 411 PCM for the transmission only. Again love your videos and will continue to be a subscriber to your channel. YourBoyEric.
Great video. One question, can a guy use a typical OBD2 FORScan to USB type adapter to connect to his PC or does it specifically need a bluetooth type adapter like the OBDLink LX?
So, I have just tried to use this software to write a vat deleted BIN file to the ecm. I bought a OBDLINK LX and it worked fine to read the ecm as well as to do a test write....both went flawlessly. When I tried to do a full flash....it failed. It said there was an unexpected error when trying to erase the ecm. Now I am stumped. I am not good at this stuff, any thoughts? I wanted to get the OBDX Pro VT, but none were available.
First I want to say thank so much for showing this new program. I'm trying to change my VIN number. I've done everything right. After changing the VIN I switched off the signal for 1 minute then disconnected the power from the ECM for about another and restored power and signal back. Once I hit read properties the old VIN is still there with no change. What is it that I'm doing wrong. Thank you very much.
Changing the VIN can be tricky, I’ve experienced similar issues and don’t know why it doesn’t work sometimes. I think you can only change the VIN to one that is compatible with the operating system you are using but that’s just a theory. Sorry I don’t have a great answer for you.
I have been messing with it but somethings are hard to find on it as opposed to tunerpro. for instance the transmission range switch. cant find it on here. on tunerpro no problem.
I downloaded it to my laptop but im not seeing tablelist utilities or xml at the top of the applaction. Im not connected to a obd port or anything look that should i still see those options ?
Can I do any tuning with this program? I’m installing 706 heads on my lq4 and was thinking it would be a good time to install a torque camshaft and would need to step up the idle and take away fuel up to about 1200 RPM
So you turned off dtc and mil for the rear O2 sensors but what perameters do you change so it won't mess with the a/f ratio?I've heard some people say rear o2 sensors only tell you if the cat converter is bad but others say it changes the a/f ratio
Ok. I am not a programmer. You said that you have PCMs for sale. How can I find out about buying a PCM? Are thry affordable? Let me know how I can contact you. Brad
Thank You very much Randy for detailed info. Am just now getting into doing tuning( out of necessity) for a 2010 Chevrolet Suburban i purchased 'as is' after the previous owner done a AFM delete and has always idled rough,,,got fed up working on the truck ,,,and i wound up buying the truck. Thinking this may have something to do with the VVT cam no longer existing and something not kosher in the ECU. Very slow process for me,not knowing what should be seeing. This will help a lot in my learning curve. Enough said.
Can anyone tell me why universal patcher can't open my bin file? It says something about can't find dtc code table! But PCM hammer says everything was written and read correctly
I’ve never had that problem before, what PCM are you working on? You could try join the Universal Patcher, the creators of the software are in that group so it’s a good place to get support for UP.
I repaired cars and spent years with GM vehicles, then held tech Seminars in 7 states for ACDelco. For almost two decades GM uses a global architecture meaning metric on everything. I can go to Dubai, UAE, Egypt and others, the components, wiring, diagnostic flow charts and readings are metric. Remember, Jimmy Carter wanted 88kl on highways moving us and England (SAE standard / Imperial) into one. It sucked and never happened by a new motorcycle I bought went to 55 MPH and stopped. Shame because I could peg that in second gear. But at sea level water boils at 212 degrees F, but add 3 1/4 degree F for every lb of pressure the cap held on coolant. So, 264 degrees F before boil but the standard has been having the gauge in the middle straight up. This is 212. I am not programming PCM's but 411 is a term for years on forums for the 4.3, 5.3L and others. Lost track and have no clue about the numbers/letters you thru out there. I installed an 8k resistor to do a 30 re-learn to run my sonar on a floor stand to clean injectors, compression check, leakage and live gage oil pressure. But will send mine to MO. for finishing the rest. Oh, I will be running a canister for purge, just no EVAP testing or EONV, which is common for detecting real small leaks. (Engine Off, Natural Vacuum) Interesting video, nice info. DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, tech since 70.
Hey Randy I’m having a hell of a time getting hptuners to work on a pcm I’m trying to flash and figure I’ll try this. Will the universal patcher software connect to the pcm through my hptuners obd2 plug?
You’ll use the OBD2 port but you’ll need a different cable/interface tool. The one I’m currently recommending is the OBDX Pro VT, I’m just putting together a video about it. Have it shot but not edited and uploaded yet. Unfortunately since you are in Canada like me it will come from Australia and will take a while to get here. Or you can use a J2534 tool like a VX Diag VCX Nano or Drewtech Mongoose Pro. If you want to shoot me an email at randy@lowbuckls.com I could probably loan you a tool to connect using Universal Patcher if you want.

I'm definitely using this video as a step by step guide for vatsnkats. I'm going to assemble a bench harnesses this week. It's going to be about a month till the truck is ready to start though. Great info will this work for a E67 ecm
It only officially supports P01 and P59 computers but I think some guys are using it experimentally on newer ECM’s. I’ve only used it on Gen 3 stuff though.
I'm. A newbie to all this. I'm doing my first ls turbo swap this summer. Was planning to purchase hp tuner pro. Does this have a 2 step function also.
No you’ll need something like the MSD 2 Step, the stock PCM isn’t capable of a two step function. I have a video about the MSD 2 step here: th-cam.com/video/NSsjds3DOoc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for that link. I thought hp tuners had a function for a 2 step.
Thanks!
I'm using universal patcher, is there a way to setup speed density/ maf delete ?
I’m sure there is, but I haven’t done it myself yet… I need to do some more research
I don’t think a generic USB to OBD2 cable will work, the one I recommend is the OBDX Pro VT.
@@LowbuckLS OK, thank you for the info!
@@LowbuckLSwhat about obdlink mx+ ?
Obd linkmx+? Need to know also.. thanks
What cables work for this
This is awesome! Thanks so much!!
Thank you still. I have a few more VIN's I can use. Will let you know if that's the answer
When I try and select device, it can't find anything I'm using a o b d link s x.. Is that not supported?
Water does not boil, under pressure at 100C (212f) It boils at like 270F with a 7 pound radiator cap.
I have been messing with it but somethings are hard to find on it as opposed to tunerpro. for instance the transmission range switch. cant find it on here. on tunerpro no problem.
I agree there are some parameters that are difficult to find in Universal Patcher.
@@LowbuckLSdo you know where or what it is called on there. I may need to use both programs to get everything.
@@LowbuckLS I was messing with it and found it. It is in vehicle systems/vehicle platform/type of discrete gear select. If anyone else asks
I downloaded it to my laptop but im not seeing tablelist utilities or xml at the top of the applaction. Im not connected to a obd port or anything look that should i still see those options ?
If you didn’t figure it out. You have to go to file then click mode and then go to advanced
Can I do any tuning with this program?
I’m installing 706 heads on my lq4 and was thinking it would be a good time to install a torque camshaft and would need to step up the idle and take away fuel up to about 1200 RPM
You can use it to tune but it isn’t quite as easy to use a HP Tuners. I plan on making some videos about the tuning side of Universal Patcher soon.
@@LowbuckLS I'll be looking forward to the video
So you turned off dtc and mil for the rear O2 sensors but what perameters do you change so it won't mess with the a/f ratio?I've heard some people say rear o2 sensors only tell you if the cat converter is bad but others say it changes the a/f ratio
The rear O2's don't affect air fuel ratio, only the front ones do. I wouldn't get rid of the front ones.
@@LowbuckLS that's what I was thinking thanks
Ok. I am not a programmer. You said that you have PCMs for sale. How can I find out about buying a PCM? Are thry affordable? Let me know how I can contact you. Brad
Thanks this isnt dosent look as complicated as i imagined.
And im done pretty simple. Took about an hour to stumble thru. On my first try. Thankyou again
Will this work on my E38?
I don’t believe it will work with E38’s unfortunately.
Can you do them?
@@garyk8593 I can if you’re willing to pay for HP Tuner credits to do it.
I found myself using this program over tuner pro when I couldn’t find a matching xdf for my buddy’s ls1 camaro ecu
Yes it works great when you can’t find an xdf.
That will be a Gen 4 engine so this program won’t work, HP Tuners will still be the best option for that one.
@@LowbuckLS OK Thanks for letting me know. Not at all familiar with what programs handle what generation ECU's.Thanks again Randy
Hardware Type: P01_P59 Its out of a 05 tahoe with a 4.8 but ok I guess I'll give that a shot thanks

DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, tech since 70.
my version is missing pcm Hammer
I downloaded but I'm unable to run the program, anyone dealing with the same issue
@@LowbuckLS I appreciate it man, thanks for the reply! I won’t take your cable, I put in a ticket with hptuners and hoping they’ll have a fix for me. Thanks again, I’ll look into ordering the cable!
Very helpful video
Does this support e38?
very usser frendly
sounds like a cool deal, but the website has been down all day, is anyone else hosting the files?
Weird it was working last night. If you send me an email at randy@lowbuckls.com I can send you a zip folder with the files.
Just tried the website again, seems to be working for me.
I finally got it all working, I appreciate your help, if ya need anything i can do, let me know.
Well I'll be damned you helped me again 😂 hope your doing well!!!
Working on a way to have a “crawl control”. Trying to use cruise control on a ls 6.0 gen 3. Drw. But the key to it is finding the 25 mph set limit, there has to be a way to lower that value in the programing. Then in my jeep I could set a 4 mph crawl, any help would be appreciated!!!!!
Being able to delete vats without buying hp tuners would be a game changer
I see factory talk view on your computer. Only guys that deal woth controls and PLC's deal with that. Are you a controls engineer?
I’m a dual ticket industrial electrican/instrument and control technician in my day job so I deal with PLC’s and HMI’s at work.
@@LowbuckLS That's sick! I'm a controls engineer, writing PLC code and developing HMI's is my day job. You've helped me out so much with these videos, please feel free to hit me up if you get stumped on something and I'd be happy to help you out man!
@@BrothersNBolts sounds good, thanks!
Aw hel. I'll try it again.
how to get one of your E C M
You can visit lowbuckls.com/store or just send me an email to randy@lowbuckls.com
i cant even access the website at all
That's strange. I'll look into it. You can also see the PCM's and programming that I have to offer in the shop on my Facebook page, just search up Lowbuck LS on FB and make sure you go to the page, not the group. Click on the shop tab and you should see some products.
👍 Take that YT
bruh its much harder for beginners
I agree it’s not an easy piece of software to use and there isn’t much for documentation. HP Tuners is easier if you don’t mind paying for credits. But even HP Tuners is not that easy to use.
A word of warning - Univ. Patcher isn't perfect on every OS. My '99 fbody OS doesn't have everything defined in their program and other random things ended up getting changed after flashing like idle speed, dfco, and probably other stuff i couldn't find. I emailed the guy and gave him info and he said he'll work on it but i'm just saying double check things.
Good advice, always good to double check.
Wow man. I'm new to all of this I've spent the last month watching a ton of videos and reading forums and it's just got me more confused and discouraged. This video finally explains it to where a smooth brain like myself can do it. I got the $87 obdx pro last week but didn't decide on witch software to download. I'm definitely using this video as a step by step guide for vatsnkats. I'm going to assemble a bench harnesses this week. It's going to be about a month till the truck is ready to start though. One question though, my donor truck didn't have cruise control, can I still use this pcm to have cruise control? The donor truck was a 2005 Silverado 2500 lq4.
Again thank you so much for making these videos!
The PCM should be the same whether the truck had cruise control or not.
@@LowbuckLS thank you
@@LowbuckLS one last question. Once I follow all the steps in the video and actually write the pcm will it tell me when to turn the key power button off and on at the end. I'm using the bench harness with the switch on the key power wire.
Thanks again sir
@@wowitslou it doesn’t specifically tell you like HP Tuners does. I just watch the screen after hitting write and wait until PCM Hammer is done doing it’s thing and then give the PCM a power cycle.
Wait wait wait we can do this for free?
I actually enjoy using hptuners but I guess that’s because I don’t know any better.
Great video Randy!
I have to check it out
This works well for stuff like removing VATS. For doing actual tuning like making changes to timing and fuel I still use HP Tuners. There are logging features in PCM Hammer, Universal Patcher and TunerPro but I haven’t used them yet. I plan on exploring that feature at some point but for now I use HP Tuners for big tasks and Universal Patcher for stuff like removing VATS.
Can I use this to on a carb LS application to control my timing?
