Just amazing this fella, Joe Lovano, and also Sammy Westico, never heard of em until now. I'm 56, brought up on this style of music by my late father who passed away in June this year. Aged 82, he would have loved this. Plus all 20s 30s and so the list grows! Enjoy!
Joe is a great stylist in his own right with his place firmly taken in the pantheon of jazz. He was channeling train heavily this night (which is why I love him!) I dig joe. He is just able to blow so effortlessly, the man is connected! I love the Conn (some people call them a Chu Berry but they are actually the New Wonder-I got one)
Hi - old tenor guy in London here. Top performance from Joe on his Conn, but my god I love the second verse of Kenny's piano break in stride style before the chorus.
Kenny Werner also reminds me of one of those creepy middle-aged dudes you wouldn't want your daughter to be anywhere near. And then he sits down at the piano and melts my face, and all that goes away.
This was part of a Montreux jazz festival compilation. One more tune was part of the program: Topsy Turvey with Judi SIlvano (Miss Lovano) and Tim Hagens on trumpet added.
I love all the great comments, but this is not "A Portrait of Tracy",by any means. This is "I'm a fool to want you". It's crazy that everyone has such strong opinions but don't know this is the wrong tune.
YTINF the best stencils are the 40s or earlier horns like the Pan American..basically a chu layout with a sweeter sound ,conn 66m pattern..also GRETSCH commander is a no frills Buescher pee shooter bell aristocrat..play great..BUNDY special is a Couf copy etc ..Reynolds did a great Martin magna stencil..
Anyone else still watching this regularly in 2023??

A representative of the school of the big sound
The great Joe Lovano.
Joe is absolutely ON FIRE here!!! This is among the best stuff he's ever done - I've known him and been following his music since the early 90s...
Still one of my favorite vids!! So playfull, and Joe's sound is as big as life itself!!
Kenny Werner! woow!! amazing!
This piece, is a work of art.
This is outrageously good!! Lovano touches my heart and soul. No wonder that my favorite Frisell and Scofield recordings are with Lovano
One of my favorite recordings! Everything just feels so good! Kenny and Joe are killin!
Man....this pianist is so good at following...I love how Joe and Kenny are in sync....the whole band is in sync

Incredible performance. You know you're playing if you sweat clear through your suit! Wow.
same changes as "i want to talk about you?" one of trane's favorite ballades.
God is he incredible on this. I just saw him live a few weeks ago and he is a serious monster player.
Beautiful tune and great playing from masters of their craft ! Being a drummer I must say that Jeff Williams really swings !
When everything falls into place....brilliant
Damn, Werner! Your block chords KILL me!!!
Great Video...these great musicians are family to me...so glad this was posted..
Roseanna
I remember catching these cats at the Vanguard about that time. Freaking awesome.
Masters at play -- 9:45 minutes of gorgeousness!

First heard this song as a kid on a Nat Cole vocal album. Joe and company put down some loving tones.
The ending is perfect
Merveilleux !

Shades of Charles Lloyd in the first melody statement--very nice..
Grande Joe!
Great playing. Nice tune.
Just nipping to iTunes to buy some Joe Lovano. Probably all of it.
i think at least 1k of these views are me
Hahah. Totally with you there. I keep coming back to this every couple months. So great!

The trane was strong in that one. Lovely........
i love how kenny just watches joe the whole time... like he's in the crowd or something
man killin, man at 3:53 lovano quotes from Four by Miles davis..genius
Fabulous playing (individuals and group). Anyone know the date of this performance?
TOO MUCH !!!!!!!!
i ve had a number of teachers over the years. joe was my favorite .
cuando tuve la oprtunidad de filmar a kenny en el bluenote me dije a mi mismo, que su armonia tiene un punto filosofico bravo kenny
Scott Lee on the bass!!
Wow
That's just the best sound. He should still be playing a Conn.
more punch and presence in the conn, no question. Such a shame that he plays those junk blandanis for the $$.
I just saw him in Boston and he was playing a silver Balanced action. He sounded so dark you would think he was playing a wooden sax.
Real Royal Matrix it’s a New Wonder. The model before the10m.
YTINF I’m kind of guessing but the Eb palm key looks like it’s round. I think that means it could be a series 1.
Please please more from this tape if you have it!!
damn Kenny sounds unbelievable!
Wooooow
@saxophile1 joe lovano is most definitely italian
Nice Joe Nice Band
inspiring
Yes it is a Victor Young tune. I stand corrected. Haven't seen that movie unfortunately.
Forget it... I just found the info --> Montreux 1994
Damn!
Kenny Werner also reminds me of one of those creepy middle-aged dudes you wouldn't want your daughter to be anywhere near. And then he sits down at the piano and melts my face, and all that goes away.
nailed the E
Anyone know of recordings or other videos of him on a Conn horn?
he's sweating through his suit jacket that's all
Did someone transcribe the first half of that piano solo? ahah!
3.00 is sweet just hiding in there
Joe is the fucking king
Does anyone know if more footage from this concert exists?
This was part of a Montreux jazz festival compilation. One more tune was part of the program: Topsy Turvey with Judi SIlvano (Miss Lovano) and Tim Hagens on trumpet added.
@pascal62 more like. 0:00 to (insert infinity here)
been a fan of kenny werners solo in this performance. the vocabulary is really stunning imo
Man -- all those block chords
@pascal62 Tried it. I get out of hospital next Tuesday.
!? Freddie didn't write this tune, it was written for the 1948 movie of the same name.
great white dope!
6:21 dig...
Lovano plays italian sax Borgani
damn
How deeply they all listen to one another.
Muy Bueno¡ Gran Jazz¡
Kids: don't try this - 3:30 and 7:30 - at home!
Saint Joe!
who is the pianist here ?
Kenny Werner: kennywerner.com. Incredible musician, philosopher, and teacher.
are you serious...? really man. you have to be joking. werner is simply incredible in this recording.
LOVANO DESTROYS
this is some serious shit
Can anybody tell if this is a Conn New Wonder I, or is it a NW II tenor? I can't make out the G# clearly enough. Man does this sound HUGE & SWEET
who the FUCK disliked this?
PAISAN
Papaaaaaaa uauhhhhhh
🌱💛🌷😃
a little like batman though
At five-forty-seven Kenny has the best swing.
🌼🙄💙🌱

i studied with Joe AND Kenny...but i don't sound like that. hmmm...NOBODY can!
4 don like... wtf!!! obviamente si sos sordo ves a un boludo moverse y nada mas ¬¬
I love all the great comments, but this is not "A Portrait of Tracy",by any means. This is "I'm a fool to want you". It's crazy that everyone has such strong opinions but don't know this is the wrong tune.
I wonder . . . . are those funny cigarettes hard to light??
this is "a portrait of Jenny" !
If you're gonna be so confident about your opinion you should at least try to be correct
Thats an Early conn Big Bore tenor.Fat.
