I'm 10 hrs into Metaphor and I love its originality. I've been a life long FF fan since FFX, but they kind of fell off for me afterwards. I tried FF13-14 and it sucked. I'm not excited for the new FF7 bc they are milking the franchise.

I always hate the argument of “It’s a baby game” first off, No. it’s not a “baby game” it’s a 3D platformer. I swear, people who call cartoony games or 3D platformers “baby games, Or kids games” are pathetic. It’s like when people call animated movies or cartoons “kids shows, or kids movies” I’m so sick of the stigma against animation and cartoons. Heck, you do realize all video games are animated, right? My grandparents love those simple Atari games. They are billed for kids but adults love them too. Pong came out and all ages love it. Mario breaks age barrier. Astro Bot embodies the spirit of gaming for all ages. I remember picking up a NES controller to play Mario when I was 5. It was such a wonder and I don't need instructions. Astro Bot is the same for the new gen.
Hard disagree with the Metaphor ranking. Metaphor took home three awards at the end of the day: Best RPG, Best Art Direction, and Best Narrative. Metaphor was probably the second most likely game to win. Black Myth Wukong should be swapped with Metaphor.

If u were to take a sample of 500 gamers and ask them how many have played Metaphor, your success rate would be rlly harsh. Alan Wake wasn't as huge as BG3 or Zelda, but it was much more relevant than Metaphor. Tho this is just all my opinion ofc.
1. It was the highest reviews game of the year by critics. The game with the highest metacritic has won every year except one. 2. It has the highest user reviews on just about every platform. 3. Fatigue for long ass RPGs and souls likes winning every year.
I dont agree that metaphor had that small of a chance at winning, especially when you take in to consideration that its a majority critics vote. Wukong did not have the reviews to win, Metaphor did.

Saying Metaphor had a 5% chance is ridiculous. The people voting for it mostly are from games outlets, so talking about appeals to a wide audience doesn't work. All of those outlets would have played it. It won Gamespot and IGN GOTY... Also it best FF7 Rebirth for best RPG at the game awards, which means it had more votes for GOTY as well.

I disagree with a couple of your takes. One, Silent Hill 2 Remake is a completely different experience from the og Silent Hill 2. Second, the whole “an exclusive should never win game of the year” is nonsense too. Where was that energy with God of War 2018, The Last of Us Part 2, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild? If the game is good, then it should be nominated. Regardless of what platform it is and isn’t on.

Every year that something like Astro Bot wins GOTY... we had a bad year. The fact that Balatro was even nominated for GOTY was because of a severe lack in quality titles. Not that Astro Bot or Balatro aren't great games. I'm sure they are... but we know what types of games typically win and are nominated. Those are well outside the box.

Hey! Sorry i'm getting to this a week late. My personal game of the year was Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door Remake! Its just the game that I had the most fun with this year. No other reason
This is the one ppl argue for, but lemme explain why he didn't. While Yuri did a great performance for sure, he voice acted as an already familiar and established character for a short 6-9hr game. Meanwhile, Neil had to completely embody his character for a game of such a massive scale. Hours and hours of dialogue for different routes and options. A game where even years later, not everything has been found. Not to mention Neil spent years recording and working on the role alongside the rest of the cast and Neil did the motion capture for Astarion himself. Yuri's performance was fantastic, but Neil deserved the award without a doubt.

And spiderman was NOT 3-9 hours . 1: yuji lowenthal did motion capture for spider man 1, miles morales and 2: playing an established character doesn’t matter previous winners Roger Clark, Nolan north, Christopher judge and Trey Parker all played “established characters” and still won so that’s not a factor. Senuas saga hellblade 2 is about 7-10 hours in length but Melina jurgens just won so that doesn’t matter. And yuri lowenthal has been working with insomniac since 2014 on the spider man series.( even though I just proved that length doesn’t matter) so on what grounds was astarion better than peter?( both are very good and I love bg3 and spider man)
@@AlexAlvarez-lh2zl Neil won because his character allowed him to show off his acting skills more. Unfortunately, this matters. Neil, voiced a character that had insane depth with multiple sides to him (depending on the playthrough the character acts differently, he could be good, evil, hate you, love you etc), which like it or not is tougher and more complex to motion capture and voice act than Yuri's character. Nothing against Yuri Lowenthal of course, he is an amazing actor and don't get me wrong I like Spiderman as a character, but he is more simple than Astarion.
@@AlexAlvarez-lh2zl it comes down to a difference in opinion in the end ofc. But i think the sheer amount of work and variety of performance Neil did as Astarion earned him the award. Incredible range and all different types of scenarios over an incredibly long game. I think he totally deserved it.
While I agree with most of your takes, I disagree with an aspect of the Metaphor point. You say that Metaphor didn't remotely deserve the win due to being a super long JRPG, while also bringing up games like Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3. While both were popular, they were still ultimately niche gameplay styles made with certain types of players in mind, just like Metaphor (Soulsike fans for Elden Ring, and DnD fans for Baldur's Gate 3), with Elden Ring being easily the more attractive gameplay style due to how much more open and easy they made the game compared to previous titles. While I agree Metaphor didn't have the massive popularity of those games, I think dismissing it because it's a long JRPG is a pretty bad take.

Not to brag or anything but I predicted Astro Bot would win back in September. I agree with you on some points but you are totally wrong about Metaphor. It was probably the runner up for GotY. It beat FF Rebirth in its own categories twice. The games that had the least chance of winning (in order) were Balatro, Wukong, FF Rebirth, ER DLC. There is a HUGE problem with nominee choices in all categories. This year there were 2 (3 imo) wasted nominee slots for GotY. Total disgrace. Wukong would have never been nominated if it hadn't sold that much (thanks to China obvoiusly) so it got nominated to shut people up. Balatro is typical mobile game on the same level as Candy Crush; it has no place in this category. Elden Ring DLC got nominated to block another game (tinfoil hat theory). I dropped FF Rebirth after 25 hours. It's so boring and everything in the game was mid. I don't know if I should pity or laugh at FF fans.
You do understand that the game awards are rigged half the time right? How else do you think Multiversus a game that was completely non eligible as a nominee got nominated for best fighting game? Heck erdtree is literally dlc for gods sake. You can't sit here and act like things were sketchy from the start this year.

I wish I could play the game to verify what the hype is about, but since it is an exclusive I can`t. This argument, as you have stated, is and should be the main argument. Saying that me/these people are the ones who wanted Spiderman to win feels like a poor rage-baited speculation. Your last point regarding the "controversy" feels poorly thought out, Sony has so many of them, many of those not even regarding their gaming division. Lastly, the "arguments" you picked from somewhere (Babygame, etc.) all feel like people crying for attention and should not be taken into account, in my opinion, since they don't represent a majority. What does represent a majority are the Xbox and PC gamers when combined who should be taken into account when discussing GOTY.

No one is keeping you out of playing the game, unless you told me someone forced you to buy a platform instead of another one and is keeping you to stay in one single platform. This year overall was a very dissapointing one. While playstation had banger after banger. Xbox was busy shutting down studios and producing garbage games. The switch is at the end of its life cycle, all big releases r being saved for the next console. So no surprise. Xbox has been in a rough spot for a while tho. Overall i think it was an okay year. Not great, but not terrible
Astrobot just sold like 1,5million copies similiar to woke-dei-dragonage failguard selling so we can know which community support this kind of game, yes astrobot is a good game but it really didn't deserve to be goty because the game itself is just super mario odyses clone! the game copies 90% of SMO to the core!! I agree with your analysis very much. I think Astro Bot really deserved it. For me it was by far the best game of this generation together with Stellar Blade! So for me it was absolutely ok for Astro Bot to win but im upset about the ignorance not to nominate Stellar Blade, which is for me the best game of this console Generation. But I know the reason. It was a political decision! All woke Journos hated Stellar Blade and wanted make it fail from the beginning and where upset it didn't. Metaphor was the frontrunner if you knew anything about the garbage journos that actually comprise that jury. Thankfully Rebirth probably pulled away just enough votes among people that like JRPGs and Astro was able to win both Direction and GOTY. Hard disagree with the Metaphor ranking. Metaphor took home three awards at the end of the day: Best RPG, Best Art Direction, and Best Narrative. Metaphor was probably the second most likely game to win. Black Myth Wukong should be swapped with Metaphor.
I disagree due to the reasons stated in the video. Especially it missing that big cultural relevance. But I hope you enjoyed the video regardless of our differing viewpoints :)

If u were to take a sample of 500 gamers and ask them how many have played Metaphor, your success rate would be rlly harsh. Alan Wake wasn't as huge as BG3 or Zelda, but it was much more relevant than Metaphor. Tho this is just all my opinion ofc.
1. It was the highest reviews game of the year by critics. The game with the highest metacritic has won every year except one.
2. It has the highest user reviews on just about every platform.
3. Fatigue for long ass RPGs and souls likes winning every year.
I dont agree that metaphor had that small of a chance at winning, especially when you take in to consideration that its a majority critics vote. Wukong did not have the reviews to win, Metaphor did.

Saying Metaphor had a 5% chance is ridiculous. The people voting for it mostly are from games outlets, so talking about appeals to a wide audience doesn't work. All of those outlets would have played it. It won Gamespot and IGN GOTY... Also it best FF7 Rebirth for best RPG at the game awards, which means it had more votes for GOTY as well.

I disagree with a couple of your takes. One, Silent Hill 2 Remake is a completely different experience from the og Silent Hill 2. Second, the whole “an exclusive should never win game of the year” is nonsense too. Where was that energy with God of War 2018, The Last of Us Part 2, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild? If the game is good, then it should be nominated. Regardless of what platform it is and isn’t on.
I havent played the SH2 remake myself, so maybe im off base, sorry about that. But I agree with the second part. I'm just saying that I can understand how it can be frustrating for people who don't have access to that game.

Every year that something like Astro Bot wins GOTY... we had a bad year. The fact that Balatro was even nominated for GOTY was because of a severe lack in quality titles. Not that Astro Bot or Balatro aren't great games. I'm sure they are... but we know what types of games typically win and are nominated. Those are well outside the box.
It was an okay year. Nothing amazing, but not bad either. Tho I think Astro Bot is a perfectly safe textbook winner.

I would say a AAA, narrative driven, action/adventure game or RPG/ARPG would be more of a "textbook" example. Something like TLoU or Elden Ring. Also, I can't think of another year that had half as many flops as 2024. We got an unprecedented amount of trash. 2024 is definetly on the extreme low end of quality

I'm 43 now and almost all of the bots you rescue I knew of because I played all of those games. It was my goty for sure and I'm glad another souls like game didn't win. I'm.sick of souls games and survival games I don't play em anymore. I know they have a place it's just not with me.

This is the one ppl argue for, but lemme explain why he didn't. While Yuri did a great performance for sure, he voice acted as an already familiar and established character for a short 6-9hr game. Meanwhile, Neil had to completely embody his character for a game of such a massive scale. Hours and hours of dialogue for different routes and options. A game where even years later, not everything has been found. Not to mention Neil spent years recording and working on the role alongside the rest of the cast and Neil did the motion capture for Astarion himself. Yuri's performance was fantastic, but Neil deserved the award without a doubt.

And spiderman was NOT 3-9 hours . 1: yuji lowenthal did motion capture for spider man 1, miles morales and 2: playing an established character doesn’t matter previous winners Roger Clark, Nolan north, Christopher judge and Trey Parker all played “established characters” and still won so that’s not a factor. Senuas saga hellblade 2 is about 7-10 hours in length but Melina jurgens just won so that doesn’t matter. And yuri lowenthal has been working with insomniac since 2014 on the spider man series.( even though I just proved that length doesn’t matter) so on what grounds was astarion better than peter?( both are very good and I love bg3 and spider man)
@@AlexAlvarez-lh2zl Neil won because his character allowed him to show off his acting skills more. Unfortunately, this matters. Neil, voiced a character that had insane depth with multiple sides to him (depending on the playthrough the character acts differently, he could be good, evil, hate you, love you etc), which like it or not is tougher and more complex to motion capture and voice act than Yuri's character.
Nothing against Yuri Lowenthal of course, he is an amazing actor and don't get me wrong I like Spiderman as a character, but he is more simple than Astarion.
@@AlexAlvarez-lh2zl it comes down to a difference in opinion in the end ofc. But i think the sheer amount of work and variety of performance Neil did as Astarion earned him the award. Incredible range and all different types of scenarios over an incredibly long game. I think he totally deserved it.

While I agree with most of your takes, I disagree with an aspect of the Metaphor point. You say that Metaphor didn't remotely deserve the win due to being a super long JRPG, while also bringing up games like Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3.
While both were popular, they were still ultimately niche gameplay styles made with certain types of players in mind, just like Metaphor (Soulsike fans for Elden Ring, and DnD fans for Baldur's Gate 3), with Elden Ring being easily the more attractive gameplay style due to how much more open and easy they made the game compared to previous titles.
While I agree Metaphor didn't have the massive popularity of those games, I think dismissing it because it's a long JRPG is a pretty bad take.

I agree with you on some points but you are totally wrong about Metaphor. It was probably the runner up for GotY. It beat FF Rebirth in its own categories twice. The games that had the least chance of winning (in order) were Balatro, Wukong, FF Rebirth, ER DLC.
There is a HUGE problem with nominee choices in all categories. This year there were 2 (3 imo) wasted nominee slots for GotY. Total disgrace. Wukong would have never been nominated if it hadn't sold that much (thanks to China obvoiusly) so it got nominated to shut people up. Balatro is typical mobile game on the same level as Candy Crush; it has no place in this category. Elden Ring DLC got nominated to block another game (tinfoil hat theory).
I dropped FF Rebirth after 25 hours. It's so boring and everything in the game was mid. I don't know if I should pity or laugh at FF fans.
Wukung got robbed 100% they should have taken it.

@@unicornandjesusfreak I don't think Steam awards have the same the same importance as The Game Awards. You can't really have a serious award be 100% public voted, because it then becomes a popularity award. Also, Steam awards only take PC games into consideration, meaning there's less competition.

I wish I could play the game to verify what the hype is about, but since it is an exclusive I can`t. This argument, as you have stated, is and should be the main argument. Saying that me/these people are the ones who wanted Spiderman to win feels like a poor rage-baited speculation. Your last point regarding the "controversy" feels poorly thought out, Sony has so many of them, many of those not even regarding their gaming division.
Lastly, the "arguments" you picked from somewhere (Babygame, etc.) all feel like people crying for attention and should not be taken into account, in my opinion, since they don't represent a majority. What does represent a majority are the Xbox and PC gamers when combined who should be taken into account when discussing GOTY.

Astrobot just sold like 1,5million copies similiar to woke-dei-dragonage failguard selling so we can know which community support this kind of game, yes astrobot is a good game but it really didn't deserve to be goty because the game itself is just super mario odyses clone! the game copies 90% of SMO to the core!! I agree with your analysis very much. I think Astro Bot really deserved it. For me it was by far the best game of this generation together with Stellar Blade! So for me it was absolutely ok for Astro Bot to win but im upset about the ignorance not to nominate Stellar Blade, which is for me the best game of this console Generation. But I know the reason. It was a political decision! All woke Journos hated Stellar Blade and wanted make it fail from the beginning and where upset it didn't. Of course they never would even nominated it.... thats why the game awards mean absolutely nothing to me!!!!! Also would they never give the award to Wookong because of this stupid fake scandal they created to bring it down!! But because it sold so incredible great they had to nominated it but it was from the beginning clear they would never let it win.... again this award is anyway worth nothing at all.

Thankfully Rebirth probably pulled away just enough votes among people that like JRPGs and Astro was able to win both Direction and GOTY.
