    I'm a high school student in Korea and I'm researching about soft power and this video was very helpful! Mr. Joseph Nye, your concept of soft power is very fascinating!

      Joseph Nye is criminally insane. You would not want to turn your wallet over to a thief, but if someone shoots you in the chest and takes your wallet or holds a gun to your back and asks you for your wallet or swindles you in a Ponzi scheme, you are still a victim of theft.

    The Berlin Wall was not pulled down because East Germans wanted to the West, it was pulled because they wanted out of East-Germany and they wanted to get rid of the oppressive system, and it was made possible by Mikhail Gorbachev that had ordered Soviet forces not to intervene.

    Some ten years ago I read an article by a Russian who worked as a teacher at the school which trained Russian foreign ministry people. He said that China will never replace the USA a a cultural force. There is nothing in Chinese culture that appeal to Western youth whether they are from Brazil or Germany. US literature, music, movies, cartoons are more to the liking even of Chinese youth.

      It's true that China's soft power is uncomparable with US's. However, China in fact has devoted lots of efforts in public diplomacy. The reason why China's soft power seems minor is due to far-reaching widespread western values. With western media constantly slurring China, China's construction of soft power becomes harder and harder.

      True but China is clever, they're using Hollywood what is already there to push their agenda. It's no coincidence the proliferation of Asian movies in the American market and Asian lead characters, emphasising the word lead. They can't simply inundate us with Chinese music, too foreign it will alarm us and most importantly we'll reject it. It has to be gradual yet pervasive. That's why they're utilising Kpop and Kmovies (i.e. Parasite) and other already popular forms of East Asian entertainment. The Chinese empire right now is focusing on the behind-the-scenes i.e. trade/market economy and land acquisition, evident by their 'sudden' interest in Africa. It's scary to see another empire gain influence but interesting nonetheless; we're on the precept of change. It's what Mao longed for.

      'Kung Fu Hustle' shows you that China is capable of being cool.
      If they were more like Hong Kong at its most free, they'd be a thousand times more prosperous, but that would be chaos for the ruling class there.

    *But Satan whispered evil suggestions to him. He said, ‘O Adam, shall I lead thee to the tree of eternity, and to a kingdom that never decays?’*
    *Then they both ate thereof, so that their shame became manifest to them, and they began to cover themselves with the leaves of the garden. And Adam observed not the commandment of his Lord, so his life became miserable.*

      Techinically, they didn't join the force. The covenant in 1939 was signed as a statement of neutrality. They claimed non-offense between them.

    Wrong. Power is the ability to effect change. What he’s talking about is submission not power. There are three ways to get someone to submit, voluntarily submission, submission through trade, and submission through coercion.

    Can you explain the difference between soft power & brainwashing? Their similarities? And so on.
    Thanks in advance🙏📖🕯

    • @partlycurrent
      @partlycurrent 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      brainwashing has nothing to do with soft power. Soft power is attraction. Like what you feel for other people.
      Brain washing is what religious people do to children. Use fear and pressure in such a way, that a significant deveation from the norms set is basically impossible to achieve for the recipient of brainwashing. Skewing your world view in such a way, that basic human qualities are called into question and dismissed.
      Brainwashing and soft power have nothing to do with each other

    • @yesneo6613
      @yesneo6613 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@partlycurrent they share some similarities...like Joseph said, a lot of American rock bands toured the Soviet Union in the 80s. This bombardment of "western" music was not on accident. If people hear the same lyrics over and over again, you erode their foundations and further your own goals. He mentioned that example as soft power, but it also feels like a softer version of brainwashing...where do we draw the line?

    • @partlycurrent
      @partlycurrent 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@yesneo6613 brainwashing is what you do directly to Individuals. Soft Power is what you have as a country when others find your ideas appealing. It's like saying tomato juice and a margarita are kinda similar.

    • @yesneo6613
      @yesneo6613 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@partlycurrent i understand...but is it still possible to brainwash the masses? Or is it simply called propaganda by that point?

    • @partlycurrent
      @partlycurrent 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yesneo6613 brainwashing is a word that's really negatively perceived. You don't create Soft Power through outright propaganda. Propaganda is usually identified by outside populations as exactly that, and in turn will lessen your soft power. To create soft power you have to reliably and believably share your ideas and stories. Your govt has to pursue your ethics, otherwise it is not credible.
      The Chinese government won't create soft power, if their "peaceful rise" strategy is backed up by a militaristic and imperial growth in the Pacific and south China Sea.
      And Donald trump will further lessen the US's Soft Power, if "the leader of the free world" keeps calling immigrants rapists or cancels treaties, that the US signed together with other democracies.
