Beautiful video, brings back memories of my times touring Thailand and the islands in the late 80's early 90's. Despite the huge commercialism which happens everywhere, there's still undeveloped areas to explore and really get away.
I went to Phuket in December 2003 when off on Christmas to New year leave. We loved it so we made reservations for December 2004 it was lucky we just went to Chang Mai instead because the Tsunami hit December 26 and tore up Patong Beach. We had friends that lost their lives in that. We most likely would have too.
Sorry for your loss. I also missed the tsunami by a week due to a last minute change in my schedule. Still, even if I had gone when I had originally planned to, since I would have been staying in Patong I know that its extremely unlikely that I would have been killed or even injured. There were actually only a handful of deaths in Patong and the huge majority of deaths occurred in Khoa Lak, which is just north of the Island of Phuket. This is also where the family portrayed in the film “The Impossible” were staying by the way. Of course even the deaths in Khao Lak pale in comparison to the number of people killed in traffic accidents each year in Thailand and this is actually the number one cause of accidental death in the country. In fact, more people die from traffic accidents in Thailand than from murder, suicide, and drowning combined.

Great video. Do you need an international drivers license to rent a scooter or car? Do any of these street vendors or bars/restaurants take credit cards? I see cash is kink there. When visiting Bangkok, is it best to take public transportation to Phuket or best to rent car/scooter from Bangkok for the entire trip? How fast do these scooters go and is it safe driving there with a scooter? Im thinking 2-3 weeks for a holiday if i go. TIA!
