My mom said I could have two Mego figures when I was a little guy and we were shopping at Woolco. I picked Blackbeard and Will Scarlett. Despite coming from two separate lines, Will and Blackbeard were inseparable in my childhood playtime. Fond memories of Blackbeard driving the Big Jim Lazervette while Will Scarlett used the Soldier Ape M-16 to hunt the Intruder.
Cripes, coming from both Pirate and King Arthur country (Wessex), I would've LOVED these figures as a kid, but I don't think I'd even HEARD of Mego until "ToyFare" magazine got going in the 1990s. And I never heard anything about the reissues, either, until you just mentioned them. Bugger!
Brilliant video, thanks. I loved hearing all about the World's Greatest Super Pirates; I have to admit I loved the Blackbeard figure, just beautifully clothed and sculpted. I'd certainly myself be interested in picking these up if they ever came back. Speaking of rare Pirate figures and the Matchbox Fighting Furies, the one figure there I would've liked there was the Ghost of Captain Kidd, and I regret to this day that I never picked him up as a kid in the late 1970's - It sold originally for £2.50 in our village toy store back then, but today is going for very, very, high sums of money on certain auction sites, mainly due to its rarity, superb coolness due to glowing in the dark, and brilliant "coffin packaging". I look forward to hearing what you think about them.
I think I have vague memories of seeing a few of these guys on the pegs at my local Caldors when I was a kid. Them and the Robin Hood figures. Again, I think. If I'd had my own money to buy whatever I may have wanted, I might have gone for some of them. But as a kid who could maybe only get one toy per shopping trip, who was really into superheroes and Star Trek, I had to stick with what I knew I had a reasonable chance of getting my parents to buy me. But they do look quite nice. As you said, a lot of love clearly went into them.
Another great vid! I never had any of the original mego pirates, but I do have a bunch of the FTC reissues. Long John Silver's pants are same as the Hulk's. I have removed the belt and was surprised they were the same pattern. Just missing the "knee holes". That's why they are alittle baggy on ole Long John.
… So did I learn anything from this? The answer is yes… I never knew why the other captain patch existed… And I really never knew why Captain Eagle existed… The alternate peg legs is now something to search for, how do you know that you’ve just watched a good video? When you can walk away with the information that I have eight minutes and I’ve learned quite a bit. I did have these as a kid by the way… I remember always being disappointed for some reason when the figure turned out to have a fat body ha ha I love the weapons of course because I was a kid… But after receiving them I don’t remember much history of playing with them. Fascinating to learn that they were a disappointment to Marty because of their non success… As a kid I’ve never knew about the fighting Furies But I can only imagine if they would’ve been the exact same scale it might’ve helped Mego to continue the line or possibly more success, Same could be said about the two FF ship playsets that also could’ve been a game changer. Great Video Thank you for the education.
Cool line of figures! I think it would be kinda cool if Mego did a Pirate figure for their modern line, perhaps some character that would be unique and dramatic and also wouldn't require a licensing agreement. Maybe Captain Ahab from Moby Dick is something they could do?
I remember these from back in the 70's. I regret not picking them up when i was a little guy, because having Blackbeard would've been cool. Unfortunately i was more interested in super heroes, monsters and aliens.
@@BrickMantooth Exactly! I'm really bummed about not picking up some of the knights because they're frickin awesome. SOoooo wish i had the Black Knight.😭
@@BrickMantooth As long as we are getting caught up, was it on your channel a few weeks ago, did you comment on the 3D glasses not working for the tv broadcast of Creature From The Black Lagoon?
There guys are amazing! The pirates and Knights look like some kind of odd team ups, like something from Alan Moore's League of extraordinary gentlemen. Captain Patch looks like he came from the Disney ride

That's fanfic overload!

I wanted these so much as a kid.
Excellent review video, that highlights a very rare toyline from Mego.
Thanks for sharing.
glad you enjoyed it!

I really like the pirate series. Great review
These pirates look fantastic especially alongside the Fighting Furies and their skull and bones pirate ship. Perfection.
I don't recall seeing the pirates on the shelves and I was the right age when they came out. They are really neat.

Beautiful figures. very hard to find, been searching for these for along time.
Yeah they're toughies in nice shape. I lucked out in the 90s.
Awesome retrospective Brick, pirates are always a win in my book 🏴☠️ Looking forward to the Fighting Furies video!
Thanks, I was that weird kid who like pirates!
@@BrickMantooth Lol, you mean “the _coolest_ kid” 🤓
Interesting footnote toy linegreat video Brian👍
Thanks Gary!
Most excellent overview of the line!
Thanks! I really love this toy line.

The old peg leg switcheroo, fools your enemies every time!
Jean Lafitte looks a little like 70s Paul Simon, which is awesome!
The pirates line seems almost lavish compared to the other "World's Greatest" lines. I don't remember ever seeing these back during their run.
Yeah their time was very brief, so no surprise if you missed it.
I don't remember those at all. I think I would have stuck to Star Trek and Super Heroes but they are very eye catching.
I remember seeing them once as a kid but I stuck mainly to superheroes myself.
Oh love it all and t-1 body love them more 😍
Yeah I dig that them too

Grate video !
That Long John Silver head looks a lot like Tom Baker Dr Who to me..
You're the second person to say that.
I would have loved these as a kid but they obviously flew under my radar. Long John looks way too young but Blackbeard looks amazing!
Yeah he's great.
These are really really great ☠
I thought long john looked like the 4th doctor who
Yeah i can see that.
@@BrickMantooth glad it's not just me. Sure as sugar I thought Bea Aurther was the 3rd doctor 🤔

I like the Moore reference a lot.
@@BrickMantooth He has spoiled me. Any weird collection of psuedo-historical figures starts my brain into making them a team.
Never heard of this line.
Wow, well I'm happy to introduce you to it.
I was kinda partial to the fighting furies
It's a gorgeous line of toys.
