    I remember going to school back in the US. Basically, we only got homework on Fridays, and it's usually parents signing or a little quiz to prepare. Teachers would even help you during the test if you're really struggling with it. The aim wasn't to TEST you but to see if you really COMPREHEND what you're learning. Then I came back to Taiwan and I was surprised by the heavy load of assignments and tests! It feels like in Taiwan, the score is the only thing that matters.

    Speak up for yourself 是我們從英國 nursery 學習的:要學習說NO,也要尊重別人說NO。。

    I think the best education can only come from parents who are capable and willing to spend time with their children. Schooling is never the best way out. It serves as an alternative for parents who don't know what to do with educating their children or simply don't have the time to do it. There are many problems in schools. This is true in the past, it is true now, and it will remain that way in the future. No matter how accommodating a school environment is, each kid is unique. One just can't expect the majority to cater to every individual's needs. It's not realistic.

      @qiulong yuefly 我倒是觉得在个人生活里可以从对待个人的态度来区分,英国比较尊重个体,中国传统上就没有个体文化,都是大的家国情怀。不一定是东罗马受东方影响,而是也和东方社会类似,个体文化没有长大或者一直被压抑。

    I think there is a clear difference in expectation of the parents of the role of the school and teacher between the two mothers. The Chinese mum tends to rely more on the authorities of the class teacher to function as a communicator and leader in shaping academic drive/competitiveness as is the mode of the “real” society really depend on to distribute resources, while the British mother expect the kids to grow as a functional member of the society and the problem that would concern her is mainly associated with communication problems. The seat problem is exactly an example of the type of problem that would concern a British mother. The seat itself is not going to be an issue if communication is not an issue. It is surprising that the Chinese mother is still using the Chinese way of thinking after 20 years living abroad.

    The chinese mum need to ask her child : why do she feel embarrassed when other students are looking at her. Why does the child feel embrassed to change seat? Or to even answer a Yes or No question truthfully. It would help the child so much if their parent can teach them to be more confident. Rather than blaming the teacher and asking for other method to change seats. I think the teacher knows whats up. He probably know the child shy which was the reason he made the statement in front of everyone so that the child can become more "exposed" and be more open up to other students.

    • @user-zf6zy1iv1p
      @user-zf6zy1iv1p 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      good thoughts, but even the intention was good, the approach was not professional, and obviously a failure. you do not "expose" a shy child to make him/her become brave, you will lead them to self-denying even further. You talk to them, you listen, you explain different outcomes and consequence , and you find a way that suits them better.

He should know why her mum sent in the note, not the student herself, especially in private school the teacher should be more considerate of the students’ feeling. Personally I think that mum should report it to the school.

    The Chinese mum needs to chill. She shouldn’t expect the whole class to change seat to accommodate her daughter - so bad idea. If the tall student is blocking her view, move to a different spot so her view is not blocked, if she can’t see the whiteboard, wear glasses. ‘Fighting’ for the nearest seating spot to the teacher is a very Chinese (Asian) thing to do, it doesn’t necessarily drive students’ grades. On being typical Asian tiger parents, I don’t feel it’s a long term and efficient solution to help children achieve success in life. Children’s inner drive should be valued above all and inner drive comes from curiosity, resilience and consistency.

The kid wasn't brave, maybe, this mother was not good at teaching her kid to be independent, yes, but his teacher was not helping, especially he should have known the child well. How can tell the whole class "YOUR MOM TOLD ME THAT ..." is not mocking and embarrassing the girl? From what I know about the independent schools in England, this teacher is problematic. We should not ignore that.

    When I think back in my own childhood since I were in primary school in only afternoon session. I didn't got much homework to do until I enrolled in secondary school. There are more than homework than what my parents expected. Hong Kong parents were so mean too much about the grade giving more than millions of candidates worrying and nervous about public exam. When I used to experienced that, I truly believed that old teaching methods are not true. They never have teach anything about the global market, job opportunities or any other skills from outside the school can also improve life. I think examination is quite toxic. It never make any difference about life. Life means something you need to gain from the outside, recruitment. Understand of what market are giving you opportunities to ensure life standard or even families improved.

    Hi Susie, May I ask a question about British corporate culture? One of my colleagues was on secondment at KPMG UK for 3 years, and as an Australian she speaks very directly. She quickly realised her UK coworkers agree with each other in the meetings then exchange their different opinions through emails afterwards which lead to more meetings. She found the whole process was very inefficient. She discussed it with the UK team members and was advised that the local culture is like that, people are very polite but indirect. Is that still common among younger generation, even with the fast pace working environment?

    I'd say modern Chinese parents who'd send their kids to private schools in the UK wouldn't only focus on grades or academics. That's not how the system works either. Although Asian parents are quite different with European parents, the pupils' performance is determined by their interests and personalities. Of course, parents also play an important role. Afterall, every child will find thier own strengths, it's not fair to compare yours to others'.

    For many outstanding children, their motivation for progress comes from their own achievements and sense of success.
    Teachers won't want students to work hard because of relying on rewards, but will hope that students will only receive encouragement when needed and slowly get rid of dependence on others' rewards and focus on their own achievements.

    I find it weird that the reason the Chinese mum’s daughter doesn’t dare to ask the teacher to change seat, is that “the teacher is a male, “ and she was “afraid of being refused.”
    The later is understandable, but the gender of the teacher doesn’t really matter actually... So I was thinking that maybe the Chinese mum still educates her daughter with traditional Chinese values including 男女授受不親 and the like...
    Btw, piano and math classes are popular in Asian cultures. Asian mums always want their children to have artistic talents, while have the ability to get high score on tests. How about children’s hobbies? It’s okay if those hobbies are “useful (commercially potential)”.

    I am an Asian Mom. I am not a tiger mom, and I don't like that label too. Because I totally don't agree with that style of parenting.
    Always respecting the children. If they want more to learn, provide them. But never force them or "lead" them. Believe them. Trust them.

    If a child want to move seat, why parents not encourage her to talk to the teacher herself?!

    I feel that the male British teacher was rude. Come on, it is a little kid. And her mom pays for going to a private school. The little girl is shy. There is nothing wrong about it. Why does he challenge a little girl in front of a whole class? Does he know any children psychology?

      Very true. The teacher is too young to the kids, special no experience for those shy kids. You got really right picture.👍

    I don’t like schools, as always. And I am not a kind of person who suits that way of teaching. The point is I am not alone; there’s tons of people like me. School can only teach you conventional knowledge, not innovative. In other words, it’s a place to indoctrinate kids. But what kids need is playing, rather than sitting in the boring classrooms. They need experiences. IMO, 3 hours of sitting in classroom is quite enough for them.
