  • Archeological research in East Texas has shown that ancestral East Texas Caddo ceramic traditions began at least 2,500 years ago in the Woodland period, and then reached their full development between ca. A.D. 900-1750. The last traditional maker of Caddo ceramics was an Oklahoma Caddo potter in the early 20th century, but the manufacture of Caddo ceramics has now been revived since the 1990s. This presentation by Dr. Timothy K. Perttula explores the character of Woodland and later Caddo ceramic traditions in East Texas, focusing on the character of vessel forms made and used through time, as well as the distinctive decorative styles on vessels represented in geographically distinctive clusters of communities and polities.
