But democracy isn't the best by any stretch either. 50% plus 1 person can vote away the rights of minorities, free speech, ability to vote for others etc.
The better solution is a set of rules which can't be voted down but uphold individual freedoms no matter what.
(Why in the word do you think countries even have constitutions to begin with?)
But most pretend the "best" thing to transition to is democracy. And that's simply not true. Nor would it bring any sort of a fairy tale ending.
