@@TheBarser Yes, atleast in Bergen. Eating a burger on a bench alone, that invite atleast 2 of these who sits on your knees xD I might give them some fries when I am done eating. Cause throw 1 of those, and 150 of pigeons and some seagulls will be your best/worst friends for atleast 20 minutes.

@@renanavelino4220 The top one is the dialect one, nynorsk was made by collecting dialects from all across the country to make a more true norwegian written language compared to bokmål, bokmål was based on the danish written language.

The man who said "It depends on who you ask" is 100% correct. I had the exact same thought when I clicked on this video. What taboo is to one person can be perfectly fine to talk about for another person.
I was born in Norway, but moved to the US when I was 8, and told i must only speak English. I have retained a lot but don't have too many opportunities to practice, nor do I have any depth. For instance, I can get my basic needs met, but to have a full conversation on any topic is difficult. The dialect piece at the end is wonderful, and my favorite part. I was born in Bergen and my mother was from there, and my father from Finnmark area, so I most easily understand those dialects, but have more difficulty with other places. I am also enjoying hearing the slang and the language mannerisms, in addition to the topics you cover. Overall, I am loving this series and the opportunity to hear real people talk, thank you so much!

@@pamelacisterna2222 From Trondhjem to Bergen it takes around 9 hour. Not days. From Bergen to oslo it takes 7 hours. From Tronheim to oslo takes 6,5 hours.. Maybe you think about the cities in the north? Trondhjem is in the middle of norway. Midt-norge. It's the same distance to Oslo from trondhjem and from Bergen. And it's not more expensive there than in the rest of norway. Everything cost the exact same in the country even if you're in trondhjem or other cities. It's not like f.ex US where the prices differ in every state. In my hometown we're only 20.000 people but everything cost the same here as in the biggest cities. I understand you don't live here bc you wouldn't say it's way expensive. Anyways this was a video about taboos in norway and people mean the same all over the country so it doesn't matter who you ask here. As long as they are norwegians themselves.

0:13 Wow. I have been to that exact same street when I first was in Norway. To the right, we see the Dromedar Kafeebar. It's the embodiment of what Norwegians mean when they say "hyggelig". To the left is the Kaffebrenneri, which also serves very good coffee. If you are ever in Trondheim, make sure to visit Bakklandet, it's so beautiful! (Just watch out for all the little birds that hop around between the chairs and try to collect small crumbs that have fallen down from the plates). Also to the right, behind the camera, is Brubakken, with the world's first bicycle lift. I didn't manage to use it correctly, even though the natives were very friendly in trying to teach me. :D
It was interesting seeing the difference from the older people (who grew up with more taboo subjects) and the younger people. I think they all sorta agree, but it's a mark of a good video to show the perspective from multiple generations.

Like if you say you want less foreign immigration. The worst way to interpret that would be to assume the person in question is racist. But if he is your friend you probably know it might be one of the hundred other reasons. Edit: when I asked myself what example I could give, this was the only one I tought of. Don't think too much of it.
Yes. I asked someone about it the other day and they said something that made sense also: that he perhaps meant to say that you wouldn't express your taboo opinions to someone who could misunderstand it intentionally, like as in, use it against you because perhaps they have some level of dislike towards you.

In my country we always talk about politics with friends and family. But we kind of manage keeping the friendship and it even strengthens our family/friends ties.

This is such a good video both for general interest and so helpful b/c of subtitles as I'm trying to learn Norwegian. I identified with many of the 'taboos' and find what's talked about with one person/group maybe different with others. I never talked personal life with family-UK, (parental-old-person reticence/prudishness) and tread very carefully with (strangers and friends) re. sex, politics, religion. Canada - people are more open and I was shocked initially at this openess.

@@1414yorks Norweigans (from what I've learned) aren't too quick to show emotions/personal feelings, and sometimes distance themselves from strangers, so maybe that's why you felt that way. Sometimes you have to learn the culture first so you can kind of read between the lines.

There are so many great aspects to that kind of culture, being able to handle life so much more easily than judging and making a conversations about others. I wish it was the same in my culture. People like to talk too much about politics, agendas, it's simply draining the mind and the soul and it keeps you always on your feet. Sometimes it's much healthier for you mind to step back and enjoy the good things in life without having to deal with all the hard topics, in which there's never black and white. I love that about Norwegian people, being liberal thinkers on one hand but also more reserved and distant in a way on the other hand, it's beautiful. It's the way I'd like to live my life, more genuinely and reserved. Being a critical thinker and not dwelling in tough questions and emotional turmoil all the time. In my country there's always stress, the news is full of negativity, people tend to feel oppressed by the leaders and with the hot climate outside that affects their overall behavior, they're just confronting and fighting with each other all the time. I've been always the one to observe from the outside and enjoy my little spot away from everyone.
I think I will move to Norway where there is democracy. If you talk negative or crititcal about the society, migration/immigrants, climate change or feminism in my country, you will lose friends, family and your job/reputation. And no, I do not live in North Korea, I live in Sweden.

Mellie hahaha that was kind of funny written. I get what you mean from what friends have told me about Sweden. Every says political correctness is much bigger in Sweden. Like you cannot say your are not feminist in Sweden I have heard. Sweden is a bit weird in this case I think. Feminism seems way stronger in Sweden, yet Sweden has not yet had any female prime minister and we are on our second. But actually what bothers me about Sweden is that patriotism seems taboo. Like only Neo-nazis seem like they celebrate being Swedish. I mean I get that Sweden has a different history than Norway so nationalism has a different meaning. But it bothers me that there are many Swedes who don't seem to get that patriotism/nationalism means something very different in Norway. I feel Swedes think about national pride as only something that separates people. But in Norway 17th of May is actually a major unifying day. If you reject Norwegian values and culture than how can you ever be integrated and part of Norwegian society? I think people need to be able to express love for the country they live in without being a Neo-nazi or something. I also think that if you are too PC in how you talk about immigrants and minorities you may just end up creating more extremists on the fringes. I am not a fan of the Frp political party but at least it has given a home for more moderate anti-immigration voters. While in Sweden people who are anti-immigration seems to have drifted into more extreme parties because it is such a taboo. Don't want to bash Sweden too much. I actually look a lot up to Sweden. While taking in all the refugees probably was not that smart, it still showed that Swedes have a big heart and are very idealistic people. There are many things in society that Sweden has organized and done better than us such as e.g. road building.

Older people who do not know the "new taboo norms" in Sweden are an easy target. And yes you are right about nationalism in Sweden. They say that nationalism will eventually lead to nazism so they try to prevent that and therefore the Swedish flag has been made a symbol for "hating immigrants" by the mainstream, so the flag has been demonized. In that case you are wrong. Swedes in general do not vote for any extreme parties. We have one big party (SD) that is almost as big as the second largest party (M). They are against the migrationpolitics and wants to change it, but the establishment will do anything to prevent them for getting any power, no matter how big they get. In that case you are wrong again. Swedes do not have a big heart, but they like to think they do. Swedes do not want to live where there are a lot of immigrants and thats why almost every city will have their own "no go zone" in the near future. What swedes do have on the other hand is a lot of contradiciting feelings and thoughts about immigrants due to the brainwashing from the media. But if you look at their actions you will know how they really feel and think about it.

Immigration isn't taboo at all in Norway. It's in the news all the time and the Bureau of National Statistics(Statistisk sentralbyrå) does statistical analysis on immigration every year and delivers those reports to the government and the media. It might not be the best topic to talk about to random strangers if you're trying to gain friends, but overall immigration as a topic isn't taboo at all in mainstream discussions of politics.
From my time in Norway, it was quite taboo to display success or wealth. You're not show inequality, or look like you are better than anyone else. I have Norwegian friends who live very modestly in Norway, and then go to Italy to be flashy. It's hilarious.
Thats why i like the gym - theres no taboos you can say what you wanna say, and you can get any reactions from agreement to mocking, and it's all just fun and honest

We in scandinavia dont hold people in higher regards than others if they are more wealthy. We dont like show offs.

You can't really ask someone what their taboos are. That's something an outsider is much better able to identify. But something which is taboo in all societies is sexual deviancy. Different societies may have somewhat different ideas as to what is so deviant as to represent a taboo, but it is part of human nature to attribute shame to sexuality. Taboo subjects are things you don't talk about because you'd be afraid that the mere mentioning of it would make people suspicious of you. For example: paedophilia. That's just about the most taboo subject there is in Western society.

Like if you say you want less foreign immigration. The worst way to interpret that would be to assume the person in question is racist. But if he is your friend you probably know it might be one of the hundred other reasons.
Edit: when I asked myself what example I could give, this was the only one I tought of. Don't think too much of it.
Yes. I asked someone about it the other day and they said something that made sense also: that he perhaps meant to say that you wouldn't express your taboo opinions to someone who could misunderstand it intentionally, like as in, use it against you because perhaps they have some level of dislike towards you.

In Norway that is actually public information, you can look up anyone's salary online. But you're right, it would be kinda rude to ask about someone's salary, and I don't think most people care anyways.

In my country we always talk about politics with friends and family. But we kind of manage keeping the friendship and it even strengthens our family/friends ties.

This is such a good video both for general interest and so helpful b/c of subtitles as I'm trying to learn Norwegian. I identified with many of the 'taboos' and find what's talked about with one person/group maybe different with others. I never talked personal life with family-UK, (parental-old-person reticence/prudishness) and tread very carefully with (strangers and friends) re. sex, politics, religion. Canada - people are more open and I was shocked initially at this openess.

@@1414yorks Norweigans (from what I've learned) aren't too quick to show emotions/personal feelings, and sometimes distance themselves from strangers, so maybe that's why you felt that way. Sometimes you have to learn the culture first so you can kind of read between the lines.
Everyone in Norway seems to speak a different language one by one😂
Some of the dialects could almost be a seperate language. One such dialect is Setesdalsk, which has a lot of influence from Old Norwegian.

We have different dialects depending on where your from :)
Just where I live, there are about 5-6 different dialects within an hour radius drive. They are very similar, but you can definietly tell them apart

There are so many great aspects to that kind of culture, being able to handle life so much more easily than judging and making a conversations about others. I wish it was the same in my culture. People like to talk too much about politics, agendas, it's simply draining the mind and the soul and it keeps you always on your feet. Sometimes it's much healthier for you mind to step back and enjoy the good things in life without having to deal with all the hard topics, in which there's never black and white. I love that about Norwegian people, being liberal thinkers on one hand but also more reserved and distant in a way on the other hand, it's beautiful. It's the way I'd like to live my life, more genuinely and reserved. Being a critical thinker and not dwelling in tough questions and emotional turmoil all the time. In my country there's always stress, the news is full of negativity, people tend to feel oppressed by the leaders and with the hot climate outside that affects their overall behavior, they're just confronting and fighting with each other all the time. I've been always the one to observe from the outside and enjoy my little spot away from everyone.

I think I will move to Norway where there is democracy. If you talk negative or crititcal about the society, migration/immigrants, climate change or feminism in my country, you will lose friends, family and your job/reputation. And no, I do not live in North Korea, I live in Sweden.

it's useless talking with a hard core German feminist about feminism, especially in areas like: Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin-Kreuzberg, Berlin-Friedrichshain, Freiburg, some regions in Niedersachsen around Hannover. They are fanatics and I wonder if they have a father or just were made in a whatever factory (I presume they were all in vitro fertilized). They dream of a world without any (!) men at all and: they hate women, who do not share their views or their way of living as well (go to a Cafe Lila location and have a talk to them). Italian and French feminists that I met just started rolling their eyes when they met German feminists, they couldn't take this radical fundamentalism which has an impact on any aspect of your daily live (and be it going to the bakery).. Regarding Swedes: those I know talk about anything and everything. As far as I know all Scandinavian countries are pretty democratic; there are always some issues but that's because humans are not perfect, even if they pretend or wish or at least hope to be
Mellie hahaha that was kind of funny written. I get what you mean from what friends have told me about Sweden. Every says political correctness is much bigger in Sweden. Like you cannot say your are not feminist in Sweden I have heard. Sweden is a bit weird in this case I think. Feminism seems way stronger in Sweden, yet Sweden has not yet had any female prime minister and we are on our second.
But actually what bothers me about Sweden is that patriotism seems taboo. Like only Neo-nazis seem like they celebrate being Swedish. I mean I get that Sweden has a different history than Norway so nationalism has a different meaning. But it bothers me that there are many Swedes who don't seem to get that patriotism/nationalism means something very different in Norway.
I feel Swedes think about national pride as only something that separates people. But in Norway 17th of May is actually a major unifying day. Many immigrants say it is their favorite day and that is when they feel most Norwegian. As far as I am concerned you can be proud to be Norwegian even if you are not originally from Norway. If you reject Norwegian values and culture than how can you ever be integrated and part of Norwegian society? I think people need to be able to express love for the country they live in without being a Neo-nazi or something.
I also think that if you are too PC in how you talk about immigrants and minorities you may just end up creating more extremists on the fringes. I am not a fan of the Frp political party but at least it has given a home for more moderate anti-immigration voters. While in Sweden people who are anti-immigration seems to have drifted into more extreme parties because it is such a taboo.
Don't want to bash Sweden too much. I actually look a lot up to Sweden. While taking in all the refugees probably was not that smart, it still showed that Swedes have a big heart and are very idealistic people. There are many things in society that Sweden has organized and done better than us such as e.g. road building.
@@povelvieregg165 Yes. PC is much bigger and there are cases where people have been arrested for writing about taboo subjects on FB. Older people who do not know the "new taboo norms" in Sweden are an easy target.
And yes you are right about nationalism in Sweden. They say that nationalism will eventually lead to nazism so they try to prevent that and therefore the Swedish flag has been made a symbol for "hating immigrants" by the mainstream, so the flag has been demonized.
In that case you are wrong. Swedes in general do not vote for any extreme parties. We have one big party (SD) that is almost as big as the second largest party (M). They are against the migrationpolitics and wants to change it, but the establishment will do anything to prevent them for getting any power, no matter how big they get.
In that case you are wrong again. Swedes do not have a big heart, but they like to think they do. Swedes do not want to live where there are a lot of immigrants and thats why almost every city will have their own "no go zone" in the near future. What swedes do have on the other hand is a lot of contradiciting feelings and thoughts about immigrants due to the brainwashing from the media. But if you look at their actions you will know how they really feel and think about it.

If you really want to know what is taboo, ask; "What did none of these people want to talk about"? What did they leave out? For example, immigration.
Immigration isn't taboo at all in Norway. It's in the news all the time and the Bureau of National Statistics(Statistisk sentralbyrå) does statistical analysis on immigration every year and delivers those reports to the government and the media.
It might not be the best topic to talk about to random strangers if you're trying to gain friends, but overall immigration as a topic isn't taboo at all in mainstream discussions of politics.
Immigration isn't at all taboo, really.
It's probably the second most talked about thing after general economic policy regarding politics.

From my time in Norway, it was quite taboo to display success or wealth. You're not show inequality, or look like you are better than anyone else. I have Norwegian friends who live very modestly in Norway, and then go to Italy to be flashy. It's hilarious.

I am sure you will get the exact same answers in Denmark. Especially about the jantelaw. I dont really feel that it exist anymore, but a lot of people do. But compared to USA it does exist for sure. We in scandinavia dont hold people in higher regards than others if they are more wealthy. We dont like show offs.

You can't really ask someone what their taboos are. That's something an outsider is much better able to identify.
But something which is taboo in all societies is sexual deviancy. Different societies may have somewhat different ideas as to what is so deviant as to represent a taboo, but it is part of human nature to attribute shame to sexuality. Taboo subjects are things you don't talk about because you'd be afraid that the mere mentioning of it would make people suspicious of you. For example: paedophilia. That's just about the most taboo subject there is in Western society.
