Instead of having to cut the plastic nubs, it is possible to just use a pair of tweezers to work the studs back into shape then remove the flex. Once the flex needs to be put back on, the studs are good to realign the flex and the studs can be smashed back down with just a couple little presses with little bits of pressure couple dabs will do it. Try not to press hard when pushing the studs back into a flat form to avoid damaging the flex cable.
This sort of worked for me to get the cables off, but couldn't get them back on without feeling really loose and eventually just falling off. Doesn't feel like there was enough plastic left. Might have to tape over it

Holy shit. I just clean it all up. It worked like new. There's no dust but it has this blueish fluid all over components inside. Thanks man. Now i knew my analog stick isn't being possesed by demon. I wish this video existed years and years ago
Thank you for guide, it helped me with PSV 1000. It has joysticks with hall sensors but is steps are similar. Cleaned and out new grease, but also bent legs on that copper colored metal part that makes presure on directional parts, bent just little to increase pressure made by those four little springs. Works great after assembly!
Wow the 1000 version is way easier to take apart. I tried to remove the thumbstick, but I was afraid I might brake something. So now I am checking out this video.

Based on our previous comments I can now say that the 2000 is easier to tear down than the 1000. The difference isn't drastic, but the 2000 was more straight-forward. The 1000 I worked on had 3G though, so a few more components than other 1000 units may have.
This is a great video! I did this but balked at removing the plastic welds. Instead I cleaned the connector, cleaned the joystick as best I could with some air and a brush, told it to be good and put it all back together and it was better! Lucky!
OK Fantastic Quack, that only lasted a few days... I bit my lip and went all in and did the complete repair and plastic welds to reassembly. There actually wasn't enough plastic to weld back one of the studs so I resorted to cutting a small piece from an area of the joystick that wouldn't miss it and that worked great as it melted right on top and welded to the post underneath. Now the joystick seems to be fixed properly although I still have a replacement coming in the mail just like you had. It's good having a soldering iron with an adjustable heat setting. I used the lowest setting that would effectively melt the plastic without burning it or turning it completely molten.

So, I managed to disassemble the housing on the thumb stick while only removing the rivets from the circuit mount on the bottom and the two smaller rivets on the sides below the metal shielding. This made pulling the small contacts and the gimbal a little harder, but I don't have a soldering iron and wanted to do this in the least destructive way possible. Edit: the circuit ribbon seated firmly enough onto the rivet posts that I was able to fully reassemble it, and it's basically good as new...though I also didn't have any lube to reapply to it, so this will only be a temporary solution. Though it's given me enough life on it to not worry about how long the replacement stick is taking to reach me. Thanks for the great video, was heaps of help, glad your Mrs(?) pushed you to disassemble it.

Hopefully they're old new stock, but that's a crapshoot. My wife pushes for the hard road too...the struggle is real....✊😑
i literally just pried open my vita, cleaned the analog stick and put it all back on again without any issues by simply following this video! i can definitely take it repair shop but hey it's worth a try.. although in my case my vita needs a replacement because the old one is just unusable.

I just used electrical tape to put mines back together and works fine. You don't even need the those two metal plates covering the side. The Vita's molding for the analog sticks helps hold everything in place. And the melting you did for the back circuit was unessessary since the metal back plating was already holding it in place.

Was trying to figure out how to remove the stick itself since I was gonna order a new one, after opening the bad one I got up I saw a crap ton of corrosion good old 8hrs in evaporust then a good isopropyl bath did the trick and now it works, guess I don't have to buy a new one now. I tried doing this myself, not worth it taking apart those joysticks. I got it to work, but it started to mess up after an hour. The 1000 model joysticks are easier to work on. Those tiny plastic nubs sticking out barely break easily. Get new ones, they're cheap anyway.
It was worth it to me, OEM sticks are nicer than the aftermarket ones. but I agree that for most people simply buying a replacement is the best/most painless option.
Wish I'd found this video sooner. Watched other guide, took apart both sticks, now one doesn't work at all and the other changed x and y axis and inverted one of them. I'm going to try again now, see if I can save at least one of them since they're not cheap.
And the back of my Vita is damaged as well but to be honest I didn't really care about that since most of the games I played didn't have it anything to do with the back touch pad and if it did it was usually something you didn't have to use because there's another way to use it
Definitely! The 3rd party one is a drastic step down from the original, not to mention the aesthetic difference is pretty obvious. You would notice right away if a system had one of the joysticks replaced.
Thanks for this video! I just got a used vita 2000 today that was in quite a state - I'm sure some dirt had gotten underneath the left joystick which was causing it to drift. I took out the joystick like you did, but instead of taking it apart I basically just bathed the whole thing in methylated spirit (don't ask me how safe that is) and dried it thoroughly with a microfibre cloth, trying to get as deep in it as possible, then hoped for the best lol. I put it all back together (after cleaning the rest of the shell because it was grimy) and surprisingly the stick now works perfectly! The thing looks good as new now, very happy with the restoration - thankfully the previous owner used a screen protector as well which is a bonus.
Glad it worked! In this type of process I would recommend isopropyl instead of denatured alcohol as the former does not leave behind any residue. But if it works it works, I hope it lasts!
just want to give my thanks for seeing this tutorial, although I didn't completely disassemble the analog stick. i just took off the metal cover under it and gave it a blow, i checked and saw that the inputs were like back to their brand new state (aside from the looseness of the analog overtime though)

Great video. I recently purchased a second hand original "fat" PS Vita and discovered the right analog stick doesn't function at all. Was going to try and find a replacement stick but inspired by your video I'm going to open it up and try clean up inside to see if that works first.
I installed a replacement stick, but the gripping rubber part is terrible, it feels like hard plastic, slides too much. So I'll try to fix the stock part instead, thanks to your video I know it's possible, thanks!
The 2000 model I just picked up is ultimately nasty so far. I took it apart. Cleaned the whole unit blew out the sticks of coarse that wasn't enough. So I'm gonna probably just set up here at 5 am lol and do this. I came across your video at like 430 am while I can't sleep. What better to do than take things apart and try to fix them
Add another one to that. Took me just a few. As another user said. I didn't have enough plastic to melt back. I ended up a micro dot of super glue on each plastic weld held it til it was dry. And good to go no more upward drift.
Thank you for this video. I've had a few do this. I've always just replaced the sticks. I got a set coming for one I just picked up tomorrow. But as you said no loss. I'm going for it. Always nice to have a few spare for the future if I can get the old one to work. Never took the time to actually take one fully apart not knowing what was inside.

Do you think the stick caps can be removed without taking apart the whole thing? I want to replace just the caps in mine and it looks like I might be able to pull them out with a bit of force.
I don't think so. If I remember correctly it is locked in by the white piece I removed at 6:46. That has to come out and then the stick/cap needs to rotate 90° to slide out of the assembly. If you don't want to take it apart you're best bet is probably to get some rubber caps.
@@FantasticQuack With your detailed video, I finally fixed both sticks, I had to completely disassemble them - and then reassemble again. It was such a problem... Used a glue gun and didn't have to buy the new ones. The original sticks are much better than analogues. In this case, PSP sticks are more convenient to disassemble, than PS Vita's. Thanks a lot!

Hello. I seem to be having an issue with my vita 2000. Most of the buttons are not working right. Should I open it up and see if cleaning the under part of all the buttons does the trick?
Hard to say without knowing which buttons specifically aren't working and which ones are. Looking under the buttons is a good place to start, but if they seem fairly clean it might be a separate problem such as a loose cable connection.

Hey, if anyone here has an issue afterward where up and down or left and right dont work. Try bending the metal contact upward, it might not be touching the contacts on the flex cable
@@FantasticQuack yeah that was the issue i had everytime i took the joysticks apart. When i bent it, it started working, at least for me i tried it on both my joysticks and they work fine now
You are welcome! It should be very similar with the 1000 model but the dissassembly process has some differences as well as the joystick itself, but in principle it's mostly the same. I've only ever worked on 2000 models myself.

They all come from the same one or two factories in China if you're just looking for the cheapest option on ebay (which is what I do). I've never had issues with a replacement stick. As far as fixing the original, it isn't about luck as much as knowing what to look for and how to "reset" things. For instance if dust/gunk isn't the obvious issue, you may just need to clean the conductive bits and reform them a bit for higher contact pressure. Now if you have heavy metallic corrosion or physical damage to the carbon traces, then you generally are out of luck. If yours isn't responding at all, the first thing I would try is simply disconnecting and reconnecting it before diving any deeper. Wish you the best on fixing yours and thanks for watching!
Do you think it'd be possible to swap parts and get the psp toggle on the vita? I always liked how close the psp toggle was to the system, didn't catch on my pocket and had less of an opening for stuff to get into. No idea if I'll actually get a reply to this consi the age of the video, but thought I'd ask.
I'm sure it's possible but would involve some modifications to either the shell and/or the electronics. Maybe I'll make a project of it one day.. Though I'd rather put a vita joystick on a PSP, I'll take the pocket catching for the drastically better stick!
Super glue will work but it will also be permanent (trying to remove again will likely cause damage). You could try a dot of hot glue for something less permanent.
my left analog stick when pointing down the sensitivity isnt as good (e.g down = walking animation, all other way = running animation) can it be fixed with alcohol?
You could try it, but you'd need to get it really wet to make sure it gets to the internals. Rotate it a number of times while wet, blow it out with air duster if you can, and wait at least a good 20 minutes to let it dry (the alcohol takes a lot longer to evaporate inside something with many small gaps vs open air).
Rusty springs sounds like some liquid got in there and other corrosion on the contacts is likely as well. Probably better to replace the joystick at that point.
Glad to have you! Yes I used the soldering iron to melt the black plastic pins back over the metal. The process is called heat staking (although this is a pretty crude way of doing it, but it worked!)
If you take it apart far enough to see those contacts you might as well go all the way and clean the whole thing. Did you see that dust bunny I pulled out at 6:52? Personally would rather not have stuff like that hanging out to cause a problem later. Thanks for watching!
hey that looks to be the psvita 1001 were did you find the joystick? i can find them on walmart but they are for the psvita 2000 so can i sue a joystick fro a psvita 2000 on a psvita 1001?
This is a 2001 model. I've heard it is not the same joystick as 1000/1001 (different ribbon cable). You can find the 1000 joysticks online through places like aliexpress, ebay, etc.
hey mate can i use my right analog stick to replace my left analog? is that possible? I just want to play psp games and i also try switching the left analog to replace my right analog in the vita settings but the left analog still moving
Keep it and your hands clean, away from areas with cats, and store it in a case when you're not using it. Dust comes from the environment it's sitting in.
I tested this with headphones earlier and heard the same problem you describe. I tested again just now and the stereo sound is working. It might have been some audio processing issue with youtube.

Philips for everything. It was either 2 or 2.5mm, usually they come in sets so you can just pick the size that fits the screw head the best. Best of luck!

It might be worth trying as a first step, but I wouldn't hold high hopes. I would try adding 90%+ alcohol, working it into the stick by moving it, then spraying it out with air duster (repeat this process several times). often the dust balls are too large or too many to get out without disassembly. Also consider the possibility that the issue could be something else (i.e. bad joystick connector or board component). Thanks for the sub and well wishes! Glad to have you :)

After taking them both apart imo they seem about the same. Other than the rear touch pad being a pain neither are to bad.

Wish I'd found this video sooner. Watched other guide, took apart both sticks, now one doesn't work at all and the other changed x and y axis and inverted one of them. I'm going to try again now, see if I can save at least one of them since they're not cheap.

And the back of my Vita is damaged as well but to be honest I didn't really care about that since most of the games I played didn't have it anything to do with the back touch pad and if it did it was usually something you didn't have to use because there's another way to use it

Well now I plan on trying this on a 1001 white model I got coming in! Seems easy enough and probably much better then buying a third party one
Definitely! The 3rd party one is a drastic step down from the original, not to mention the aesthetic difference is pretty obvious. You would notice right away if a system had one of the joysticks replaced.
Thanks for this video! I just got a used vita 2000 today that was in quite a state - I'm sure some dirt had gotten underneath the left joystick which was causing it to drift. I took out the joystick like you did, but instead of taking it apart I basically just bathed the whole thing in methylated spirit (don't ask me how safe that is) and dried it thoroughly with a microfibre cloth, trying to get as deep in it as possible, then hoped for the best lol. I put it all back together (after cleaning the rest of the shell because it was grimy) and surprisingly the stick now works perfectly! The thing looks good as new now, very happy with the restoration - thankfully the previous owner used a screen protector as well which is a bonus.

Glad it worked! In this type of process I would recommend isopropyl instead of denatured alcohol as the former does not leave behind any residue. But if it works it works, I hope it lasts!
just want to give my thanks for seeing this tutorial, although I didn't completely disassemble the analog stick. i just took off the metal cover under it and gave it a blow, i checked and saw that the inputs were like back to their brand new state (aside from the looseness of the analog overtime though)

Hello! I am going to follow your instructions. But it seems that you haven't mentioned if you put any grease after cleaning.
If yes - could you please tell what kind of grease you use and if there are any cheaper grease alternatives for one time repair?
I didn't use any grease but it wouldn't be a bad idea. Super lube brand grease can be used and is pretty cheap
Just realised that the vita 1000 used hall effect sticks as opposed to the 2000.
Interesting I didn't know that, but would make sense then why 1000 sticks are so expensive in comparison!

it so happen that my ps vita had been sleeping for 4-5 years now coz of its ghosting joystick lol. i tried to fix it just now with the help of your video and dang IT REALLY WORKED! 😁👍 kudos bro! but instead of soldering iron I used glue gun cos I can't find mine lol. good thing it worked too .

Great video. I recently purchased a second hand original "fat" PS Vita and discovered the right analog stick doesn't function at all. Was going to try and find a replacement stick but inspired by your video I'm going to open it up and try clean up inside to see if that works first.

I am amazed it worked. I guess CO cleaner and compressed air is the key?. I lost my original nub since i replaced it with a cheap stick.
The key was removing the ball of dust and hair trapped inside of it. Cleaning and compressed air are essential for sure

I installed a replacement stick, but the gripping rubber part is terrible, it feels like hard plastic, slides too much. So I'll try to fix the stock part instead, thanks to your video I know it's possible, thanks!
Aftermarket sticks always feel like crap compared to OEM, I hope you can get your original stick working!
The 2000 model I just picked up is ultimately nasty so far. I took it apart. Cleaned the whole unit blew out the sticks of coarse that wasn't enough. So I'm gonna probably just set up here at 5 am lol and do this. I came across your video at like 430 am while I can't sleep. What better to do than take things apart and try to fix them
Add another one to that. Took me just a few. As another user said. I didn't have enough plastic to melt back. I ended up a micro dot of super glue on each plastic weld held it til it was dry. And good to go no more upward drift.

Thank you for this video. I've had a few do this. I've always just replaced the sticks. I got a set coming for one I just picked up tomorrow. But as you said no loss. I'm going for it. Always nice to have a few spare for the future if I can get the old one to work. Never took the time to actually take one fully apart not knowing what was inside.

Yes a year later still going. Again I did have to use super glue to reconnect my plastic welds as I cut to much off didnt have a sokdering iron@@faytclubs

Sometimes replacing a problem joystick is the easiest path.
I did this a long time ago after my vita joystick is ghosting and it works for me

Do you think the stick caps can be removed without taking apart the whole thing? I want to replace just the caps in mine and it looks like I might be able to pull them out with a bit of force.
I don't think so. If I remember correctly it is locked in by the white piece I removed at 6:46. That has to come out and then the stick/cap needs to rotate 90° to slide out of the assembly. If you don't want to take it apart you're best bet is probably to get some rubber caps.

@@FantasticQuack With your detailed video, I finally fixed both sticks, I had to completely disassemble them - and then reassemble again. It was such a problem... Used a glue gun and didn't have to buy the new ones. The original sticks are much better than analogues. In this case, PSP sticks are more convenient to disassemble, than PS Vita's. Thanks a lot!

Dude. I've been replacing the analog sticks for like 4 times now in 7 years without knowing what has happened. Ive gotta stop replying with new one. Might try to open it and clean those sticky dust and try if its working or not

Hello. I seem to be having an issue with my vita 2000. Most of the buttons are not working right.
Should I open it up and see if cleaning the under part of all the buttons does the trick?
Hard to say without knowing which buttons specifically aren't working and which ones are. Looking under the buttons is a good place to start, but if they seem fairly clean it might be a separate problem such as a loose cable connection.

Hey, if anyone here has an issue afterward where up and down or left and right dont work. Try bending the metal contact upward, it might not be touching the contacts on the flex cable
You're talking about bending the tiny contacts on the ZIF connector? Did you have this problem and that worked for you?
@@FantasticQuack yeah that was the issue i had everytime i took the joysticks apart. When i bent it, it started working, at least for me i tried it on both my joysticks and they work fine now

You are welcome! It should be very similar with the 1000 model but the dissassembly process has some differences as well as the joystick itself, but in principle it's mostly the same. I've only ever worked on 2000 models myself.

Unfortunately the 1000 and 2000 models have slightly different joysticks and they're not interchangeable.
I know this over a year old but it helped big time! I have a vita with the right analog not responding at all. So I may just try to pull this baby apart now, hopefully have your same luck and I can get it to work.. Thanks again!!!!! If I have to replace it do you have a brand u recommend or better yet, stay away from?
They all come from the same one or two factories in China if you're just looking for the cheapest option on ebay (which is what I do). I've never had issues with a replacement stick. As far as fixing the original, it isn't about luck as much as knowing what to look for and how to "reset" things. For instance if dust/gunk isn't the obvious issue, you may just need to clean the conductive bits and reform them a bit for higher contact pressure. Now if you have heavy metallic corrosion or physical damage to the carbon traces, then you generally are out of luck. If yours isn't responding at all, the first thing I would try is simply disconnecting and reconnecting it before diving any deeper. Wish you the best on fixing yours and thanks for watching!

Do you think it'd be possible to swap parts and get the psp toggle on the vita? I always liked how close the psp toggle was to the system, didn't catch on my pocket and had less of an opening for stuff to get into.

I'm sure it's possible but would involve some modifications to either the shell and/or the electronics. Maybe I'll make a project of it one day.. Though I'd rather put a vita joystick on a PSP, I'll take the pocket catching for the drastically better stick!

Super glue will work but it will also be permanent (trying to remove again will likely cause damage). You could try a dot of hot glue for something less permanent.

my left analog stick when pointing down the sensitivity isnt as good (e.g down = walking animation, all other way = running animation) can it be fixed with alcohol?
You could try it, but you'd need to get it really wet to make sure it gets to the internals. Rotate it a number of times while wet, blow it out with air duster if you can, and wait at least a good 20 minutes to let it dry (the alcohol takes a lot longer to evaporate inside something with many small gaps vs open air).

Rusty springs sounds like some liquid got in there and other corrosion on the contacts is likely as well. Probably better to replace the joystick at that point.

Glad to have you! Yes I used the soldering iron to melt the black plastic pins back over the metal. The process is called heat staking (although this is a pretty crude way of doing it, but it worked!)

You dont really need to completely dismantle the joystick and clean every peace, just the contacts of the two potentiometers.
If you take it apart far enough to see those contacts you might as well go all the way and clean the whole thing. Did you see that dust bunny I pulled out at 6:52? Personally would rather not have stuff like that hanging out to cause a problem later. Thanks for watching!

Do you think that switch lite analog stick drift can also be done like this one? It does look similar
The switch joystick is a bit different. Drift can occur for more than one reason so it is hard to say for sure, but may be worth a try.
2:04 What function the thing you show if it we dont assemble it back it will be okay?
That connects the rear touch pad. If you don't reconnect it then the touch pad will not work.
hey that looks to be the psvita 1001 were did you find the joystick? i can find them on walmart but they are for the psvita 2000 so can i sue a joystick fro a psvita 2000 on a psvita 1001?
This is a 2001 model. I've heard it is not the same joystick as 1000/1001 (different ribbon cable). You can find the 1000 joysticks online through places like aliexpress, ebay, etc.
i just tried this .. not enough plastic to weld .. will use a small amount of A B Epoxy adhesive and see how it goes.

You can on vita slim/2000 but I think the joysticks are different/unique parts on the 1000 series.

If you're not getting any response at all I'd recommend replacing the joystick.

Keep it and your hands clean, away from areas with cats, and store it in a case when you're not using it. Dust comes from the environment it's sitting in.

I tested this with headphones earlier and heard the same problem you describe. I tested again just now and the stereo sound is working. It might have been some audio processing issue with youtube.

Super glue will work but you probably won't be able to open it again after that without damaging it.

Philips for everything. It was either 2 or 2.5mm, usually they come in sets so you can just pick the size that fits the screw head the best. Best of luck!

It might be worth trying as a first step, but I wouldn't hold high hopes. I would try adding 90%+ alcohol, working it into the stick by moving it, then spraying it out with air duster (repeat this process several times). often the dust balls are too large or too many to get out without disassembly. Also consider the possibility that the issue could be something else (i.e. bad joystick connector or board component).
