The Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, lasted for 3-1/2 months, from July 31st to November 10th,1917. Ypres is a city in Flanders (a region of Belgium.) While the casualty numbers are still disputed, the current consensus is around 260,000 on each side, or somewhere in the vicinity of half a million in total. The area around Ypres was a battlefield from October 19th, 1914 to October 2nd, 1918... just 3-1/2 months short of the whole length of the First World War. In those four years, the armies, mostly British (with a lot of units from all parts of the Empire... India, Egypt, South Africa, Australia, Canada,) and German, would suffer over a million casualties. For almost all of that time, until the German Army collapsed in the fall of 1918, four years of the most savage fighting the human race has ever known, the lines never moved much more than three miles from where the original trenches were dug in 1914. It's been 103 years since the guns fell silent at Ypres. Belgian flower farmers still dig up bodies every spring when they plow their fields.
