I played gut bucket in the 70's...and we used a shovel handle instead of a broom handle, and bought a Bass violin gut string.

My stage bucket very similar, string made from skydivers line, works well, love this vid! FYI, I have recommended your excellent video to bucket fans who wish to build one.

Nice video Bucky! I would recommend 1/8 inch air line cable for the string, alot more resonance.

Encountered this exact model the other day. The gentleman who introduced me to it also sported the exact same ball cap you're wearing, very interesting. I've been a bassist for over a decade, this bass trumps my electric 4 and 5 string basses as far as look and sheer fun.

Thank you for posting this. I know that you are aware of this, but for others considering building a 'gut bucket'/washtub base...The washtub bass is a wonderful, inexpensive 'instrument' to have fun with. I played for over 50 years until I lost some hearing and had to change to an electric bass. Playing washtub (and other fretless, stringed instruments) requires that your ears are capable of receiving the feedback from your playing, so that you can adjust the string tension (length), on the fly to produce the correct note. I believe the best player would be someone with perfect pitch, which is not me. I lost some of my ability to perceive that feedback because of my hearing loss, and so switched to a fretted electric bass that, if tuned properly, will produce the correct notes for me. I make my buckets a little differently than you do and will be posting my ideas soon in a video here on TH-cam. There are many many designs for washtub bass. I like your idea for using a bushing(?) through the bucket. I have never tried that. I will try to leave you a link to my video so we can swap some ideas. :-)

Fun project, but seriously, a handsaw would have made both cuts in the time it took to plug those power saws in!

In England in the 1940s we used tea chests ( Plywood boxes for transporting tea) They gave a deeper, more mellow sound. Putting your foot on the box killed the sound.

Great job, Bucky! I've also been playing the Tub Bass for a number of years now. I use a braided nylon rope from Walmart....cheap instrument string....and I do use a glove for long gigs! I just tie a simple knot at both ends of the rope, no washers, etc......very much like your setup. I tried washers, hard and soft ones, eyebolts, etc......found out that simple was easy and sounds good and gives me about 1 1/2 octave range. It's a blast to play, isn't it.....and still amazes me that a tube, rope and stick can give such a great bass tone. Here's a video of me playing one of my tubs, if you care to watch: th-cam.com/video/0HS922HEhIo/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for putting this info out there and spreading the fun and music!! You look like a fella that loves to have a good time!! :) God Bless Ya!!

You’ll get a lot nicer sound if you go directly into the hole and fasten it in place with a large washer, felt pad and big knot. Just hammer out the sharp edges of the tub and tape them off with gaff tape first.

Experiment. I use regular clothesline. keep in mind that it stretches quite a bit
Nylon tends to cut into your hands as you pluck the string
