I was involved in a postmortem where a paddler was lost. A plethora of things went wrong but one was a SPOT that was activated but showed the wrong light. It was however active and was put in the hold of a plastic kayak. No one was summoned, the thing apparently had a low battery and failed to punch through the plastic. Our waters are unforgiving. Mr Segal passed away after about 12 hours of struggling. His paddling partner pulled batteries from a GPS. He put them in the SPOT that worked then.
I'm of two minds whether I like the plastic bouyancy/strap attachment bolted onto it. Without it the unit is really small (which is what attracts you to it in the first place), with it doubles the size. If you are not going out on the water you will not need it. Also the unit is exposed and may take a beating in heavy bush. If you don't have it on you need to find a pouch to attach it to you gear.
In one of the descriptions I read of this i most appreciate that once activated the user is advised to, _Hold on because they are coming!_ My fiancée bought this for me because I go fishing in remote areas where cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent.
these are really an amazing invention - and they save so many lives. I see them used often at work and have seen them save lives .. they are a great addition to ones insurance when heading into the wild
Thanks for your reply. I understand this device requires NO subscription which appeals to me. For my lifestyle it'll be handy. It's not for highway use in a winter emergency I suppose but backpacking primarily. Cost vs lack of actual use but 5 watt power big advantage. Very comprehensive video mate!
Thanks Chris appreciate the feedback. The into is a bit long winded but cant change it now. The lack of fees for me is a big thing also. I dont have any need for the tracking services like SPOT units provide plus their fees make it very costly. Perhaps if I was doing a journey and mapping it then I would bevsomeone else would be paying for it. These units are just simple, and work well and well priced. Best of luck let us know if you end up getting one.
Alex McGruer yeah very different..is yours water activated in case.of bail out or fall out? I believe water craft are supppsed to have the larger EPIRBs and these are more land based ones.but would do the trick if needed...its a very good size bit of kit glad to hear you take safety serious. :)
Have you noticed any problems with the antenna hook point on this unit? I just bought 2 for kits and the antenna have a tendancy to unhook and spring open. It's a compression fit with thin plastic. Appreciate feedback. Thanks for video. Appreciate it.
Hi Chris, thanks for commenting. The beacon has two buttons on it. One is for activation and the other is a test function. The test function has two optione, one for general operation the other for full GPS testing and which one depends on how long you hold the button down. A positive test results in the strobe light flashing a number of times also dependant on which test you do. The test function does use the beacons battery and its not recommended to test it too often as this will reduce its operatonal time if activated. That being said I do test it from time to time and if I lend it out to someone, so Im sure its good to go. Hope this answers the question. Regards phil
Update. There is a rim on the right side of the unit that the antenna tucks into and makes sure the antenna stays put. ACR. NASA grade stuff. Thanks for your time.
Classic sir, thanks for making my day...a little bit of humor goes a long way even if you were being serious..... if you do have one of these I hope you never have to set it off for real, ive been to many rescues and emergencies in my Medic years and can tell you these saves lives and it is sad to see what happens when people are not prepared and die alone in the wilderness...sad stuff... Greetings from NZ and thanks for stopping by..
I want to get one of these for my teenager who drives around a lot , is this something that I could get , put it in his car without him noticing and locate where he is or where he goes !
+Got DJi Phantom around about 48 hours or so, depends on how many times you have used the test function, but more than enough for them to locate and pin point your signal, of course if you set it off, stay where you are and wait for rescue.
+Eddie Butler Shock-Waves *The 406 MHz signal is a worldwide standard so it will work for you. You will want to register your PLB so they know who they will be looking for...* www.dttas.ie/sites/default/files/25%20of%202010.pdf
Sir Fa thanks, they have come down a lot.in price now and you can find cheaper models. I love this unit and company ethos so I go with them for sure but there are cheaper, ebven.this one is cheaper now than what I paid. Theses are life saving devices and they work amazingly..so there is huge technology and.investment.in them to make sure when you need it, it works. But then there will likely be some cost just because they are what they are and people will pay money to feel safe also. Thnx
Sir Fa this one has a floating ability so is a bit thicker than the others, there are many brands some much smaller and some even bigger..i like this company a lot they have a great system, ethos and reputation so I chose this one...but i could have chosen from many brands
If you're in Australia, contact us at sales@australianavionics.com.au to purchase one of these at a price a lot less than mentioned in this video, cheers
Thanks Jeff had a look at your website, seems like you sell a lot of great items. Is it sensitive information how much your customers can get these for on the website or would you like to post it as we get a few views from Australia judging by the analytic....or perhaps you would like me to put some sort of annotation on the end of the video.. always happy to do that as the more people that have these the better..PM me if you wish..Regards Phil and Matt
Hi Phil, we are currently having a promo on the ResQLink+ unit at A $275.00 inc GST, this will run until February 14th or until sold out and includes a ditch bag, signalling mirror and a Firefly 3 Strobe Light, quite happy for you to promote this any way you can and if anyone ever uses their ACR products for a rescue they can also register their rescue at www.survivorclub.com through the place of purchase and the beacon will be framed and mounted for other people to see, you will also receive a replacement at no extra cost, cheers, Jeff
I must say SHOOT me NOW !!! My dear God Yes its a box who cares I thought I would quickly take your challenge the first Major store I cam across online sells them at $299 Looks like those great guys at Mountain Design Screwed you guys over.
Robert Staib Lol thanks for taking the unspoken challenge, bear in mind though that this video is now three years old so you are comparing prices from then and now. Also is the unit coming from Australia or from the USA, cheaper to get from major stores in the USA but you then need to re chip them in Australia.
Robert Staib great news looks like the price has come down a bit, an excellent investment indeed. Given that pruce hopefully more and more people will take it up and it will help rescuers..thanks
I don't know if NASA grade is a good analogy. I think of heat tiles that are crazy glued onto a space shuttle that blows up when you say that. maybe aircraft spec is more like it. acr is awesome though, I should have gone with one of these , but stupid rei sold me a spot which is a crap product and a scam with the annual billing. last best chance... like that!
yes I think spot is interesting in its ability to send messages, I do like that part especially in say here in New Zealand where mobile coverage is crap in the outdoors, but the yearly billing is a joke and expensive. These just sit there hoping never to be used but it one must then they will do their job - seen them multiple times at work in my job and they are amazing
Hi Thanks, yes the Spot device is considerably cheaper, however it also requires a yearly subscription fee, and this adds up very quickly. Also SPOT beacons work on a slightly different system and are not nearly as accurate as the 406Mhz GPS beacons like the one in this video. The Satellite systems are different which means the signal detection time can also be longer. If it was my choice I would go a ACR Beacon over SPOT any day of the week. The added bonus with SPOT is the ability to let people know you are ok etc..and the track me function again this all costs money. But each to their own for sure, appreciate your comments. Phil

Great video. Thank you. I'm about to crew on an ocean crossing and have also been thinking about which model will be most convenient....
I guess I'll have to purchase one of those for my next sea kayak expedition, thanks for the video.
I'm researching to hopefully find a cheap plb for when I'm hiking
Cheaps probably not the best but in saying thay they are getting cheaper every year..id say $250 - $300 or so gets a good unit now
I'm of two minds whether I like the plastic bouyancy/strap attachment bolted onto it. Also the unit is exposed and may take a beating in heavy bush. If you don't have it on you need to find a pouch to attach it to you gear.
have you changed you mind?
In one of the descriptions I read of this i most appreciate that once activated the user is advised to, _Hold on because they are coming!_ My fiancée bought this for me because I go fishing in remote areas where cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent.
these are really an amazing invention - and they save so many lives. I see them used often at work and have seen them save lives .. they are a great addition to ones insurance when heading into the wild
Great Video, thanks for sharing
ACR Artex thanks very much for making a great piece of kit
Thanks for your reply. I understand this device requires NO subscription which appeals to me. For my lifestyle it'll be handy. Thanks for the video. Did you end up testing this in the bush and would you still recommend this unit?
They are great units and they work worldwide, with an average signal picked up by search and rescue services in about 3 minutes.
I carry an EPIRB in my kayak. It is about the size of a motor cycle battery. This looks great and is about 1/8 the size. .
Alex McGruer yeah very different..is yours water activated in case.of bail out or fall out? I believe water craft are supppsed to have the larger EPIRBs and these are more land based ones.but would do the trick if needed...its a very good size bit of kit glad to hear you take safety serious. :)
So can you take the built in flotation device OFF? I'm on land, no need for it to float.
Meeker Extreme there is always a need for it to float. ALWAYS.
Have you noticed any problems with the antenna hook point on this unit? I just bought 2 for kits and the antenna have a tendancy to unhook and spring open. It's a compression fit with thin plastic. Appreciate feedback. Thanks for video. Appreciate it.
James Duprey had the odd issue..a rubber band would suffice I imagine just in case..
Can this be tested without alerting rescue services unnecessarily ?
Hi Chris, thanks for commenting. The beacon has two buttons on it. One is for activation and the other is a test function. Great video, but very outdated by now. Thanks for posting.
yes I should do another one on the new beacon ive got - what would you like covered in it
Update. There is a rim on the right side of the unit that the antenna tucks into and makes sure the antenna stays put. ACR. NASA grade stuff. Thanks for your time.
James Duprey thanks James..it sure does...neat we package.
I had to deploy my Personal locator beacon as i was becoming BORED TO DEATH
whilst watching this vid

Uh..no.
Mate you are mental and i mean Mental with a capital M
after turn on, just wonder how long the batterlast ? 24 hrs or ?

I was told by the company max 24hrs ?
could this device be used in Ireland or just the usa

What you want is a Spark nano GPS tracker..
More specifically a Spark Nano 3.0 GPS Tracker
Why beacons are so expensive and chunky?
Sir Fa thanks, they have come down a lot.in price now and you can find cheaper models. Next72Hours are you representative of this company? Or your just buyer of such products?
Sir Fa just a buyer and user of this product thanks..theyvare a very useful tool
Next72Hours i see, but with modern technology why they are so chunky?
Sir Fa this one has a floating ability so is a bit thicker than the others, there are many brands some much smaller and some even bigger..i like this company a lot they have a great system, ethos and reputation so I chose this one...but i could have chosen from many brands
Next72Hours fun/terrifying fact: Australia actually has 21 of the top 25 most venomous snakes in the world.
Across The Across always in the back of.my mind lol

It would be legal for him to install it on his teenage child's car without their consent because they are under his jurisdiction until age 18.
