hello, I just have a one question here, once we complete all this steps shown on the video, and install applications on ssd, I can also create a separate folder and store media right, I mean simultaneously I can install apps also store media files right
Apps are mostly self contained (when you right click on an app you can see it's actually a folder with a bunch of files inside) however what you didn't touch on is the folder application support in Library a lot of applications keep part of their code in there this is not getting moved when you move an app.
The larger portion of the App is being moved along with all your data to the SSD. Anything stored in Library is just things the OS needs to run the App I would assume, which doesn't take up much space. 👍💪

All this is great! but when you have to make an update of your apps (lets say Adobe premiere Pro) How do you do it from the SSD??? Or do I need to install the app and redo this procedure each Time I want any updates?)
I haven't tried that. Whenever an App update is available try to update it and see what it says. If it doesn't update then you might have to download the updated version and redo the procedure.
Excellent video! So when you drag the app to the external SSD drive, when you open it knows to look on the internal drive for the Library and other files that place on the drive when the app was originally installed?
Thank you, glad you appreciate it! Yes, it should automatically locate the files. After you move the App, you can also choose to save files to the external drive.
@@LamarMK Awesome. Can now buy a laptop with a smaller, less expensive internal drive and then use an external drive to add more capacity. A huge advantage !

I may have overlooked it. Do you have a video that shows how I get the apps I moved to the external SSD to show in launchpad? Once I move them they disappear from there. Or do I have to make a separate launchpad for the external SSD?

Great Video. How to install garage band , Logic Pro X, Final cut pro on external hard drive , external SSD ? Thank you
Thank you. Do it the same as I show in the video, install to internal SSD and then move to the external SSD. 👍💪
Can you move system apps like App Store or Find my to the external drive?
Not sure, but even if it’s possible I wouldn’t recommend moving them. 👍💪
Macbook pro m1 14 inch is my favorite
Nice! I got one, did you see my videos on it?
Does this work for Photoshop also ?Cause i have scratch disk problem on my MacBook🙏
Yes, should work just the same. 👍
Can I specify a location for my iCloud Drive to be n the external SSD?
Never tried. Worth experimenting.
Do you think can i run Final Cut Pro from External sandisk extreme pro in good speed?
Yes, it should run pretty good. Even editing clips from the external SSD is pretty good 👍💪
Can I download all my photography software into a portable SSD to save spce on laptop
Yes, you can.
@@j.singer8461 Yup, exactly! I’m doing the same with my New MacBook Pro, works great and saves a ton. 😁👍💪
Hi. If you move the macOS apps to the SSD, will you have issue updating the app in the future?
Hey 👋! I have not tried to update an App yet since all the apps I use are up to date. Will have to experiment and see how that goes. 👍💪
@@LamarMK I've tried to update an outdated macOS app after moving it into SSD but I couldn't and it asked me to redownload from cloud again.
@@meghax Got ya. Thanks for the update, so it seems you might have to move the App from the external SSD back to the internal SSD and update it then move it back over to the External SSD once it’s been updated.
Is it possible to format to ExFat instead?
I’ve not tried that, so I’m not sure. 👍💪
@@LamarMK gonna wait for my M1 and test it out. Still stuck in China as of now😂
@@minc3 Oh wow! How long has it been stuck? Lol. 😂
@@LamarMK so far the delivery date has been postponed three times 16/6 > 18/6 > 23/6-25/6 > 18/6. No idea if it’s gonna change again. 😬
@@minc3 Oh wow! Maybe try getting it from Amazon instead, sometimes they have them on sale there and it’s much cheaper than from Apple. 👍💪
Does the external ssd keep your log in information and all the personalized settings?
It should save the settings of the Apps that are transferred to it.
I may have overlooked it. Do you have a video that shows how I get the apps I moved to the external SSD to show in launchpad? Once I move them they disappear from there. Or do I have to make a separate launchpad for the external SSD?
I haven’t experimented with adding them to the launchpad.
@@LamarMK Thanks. I'm still having issues with my photos attached to or sent in messenger showing for about 12 hours but then they disappear overnight. I think it's an issue with my mini, they show on my iPad. Have a great week.
@@kodakfuji Issues with iCloud or something? Thanks, same to you!
I’m curious. Can I setup a fusion drive like OG macs had. So the system utilizes the internal for which it deems best. And then uses the slower disk for the rest. Is this still a possibility or am I living in the past?
Hmmm, I’m not sure. It would take some experimenting.
@@LamarMK I bought a stackable thunderbolt external I/O with expansion slots for ssd. I’ll try a few things out and get back on results. Thanks
Hey Lamar, I have a 2019 Macbook Air Retina. Would this method work for me as well?
Hey Carlos! Yes, it should work for you as well. 👍💪
Haii gais.. can i running xcode in external hard drive I’m planning wanna use nvme for external
Never tried to. Try it out and see.
Hi there's a way to install apps on external ssd on ipad?
Hey 👋! I haven’t tried to yet, but it’s something worth exploring so stay tuned. 😁👍💪
MAN! you saved my life
Happy to Help! 👍💪 Subscribe for more.
I don’t have apfs as an option, only Mac OS extended ( journal ) or ( case sensitive journaled) , ms-dos ( fat) and ExFAT.
Which would I use?
You can try to use the macOS Extended Journaled. 👍💪
I'm new to this, but could I somehow download an app I made onto a hard drive and transport that app to another computer by plugging it in?
Yes, you should be able to plug the External SSD into another Mac and run the same Apps. 💪👍
@@LamarMK thanks!
@@TheLoneCourier2077 You’re welcome! Stay tuned for more. 👍💪
When switching apps like fcpx and Lightroom too SSD where do the files/backups store? And where should we have three files stored on internal or external? Also would I have all the presets on the same SSD
You can manually choose where you want to store/backup your files in each app. I store majority of my files on external drives. 👍💪
I got the MacBook Pro M1 because I already had 2 minis and I wanted a built-in monitor and camera. Aside form the measly 2 ports Apple deigned give us, I am very happy with it.
I have a question about your LG monitor, does the LG Onscreen Control work on your mini, I have the LG27UL850W with the MacBook Pro M1, it does not work, it says it can't see the monitor...thanks in advance
Yeah, that makes sense. I never had a Mac Mini before so that’s why I got it, and I gotta say I love it.
No, the Onscreen control doesn’t work for me, I’ll do some further test and see if I can get it to work. Check out my Mac Apps video, I got a cool app in there called Magnet and it has great split screen functionality.
Can you instal the app WeChat on an external drive?
You should be able to install any Mac Apps. 👍💪
@@LamarMK Can you try and let me know. I was told apparently not. Would be cool if you can show how.
How fast is this drive? Comparable to the internal SSD on the Mac Mini?
The internal drive is faster. The external drive is fast enough for me to edit TH-cam videos from, so it’s not slow.
