All this is great! but when you have to make an update of your apps (lets say Adobe premiere Pro) How do you do it from the SSD??? Or do I need to install the app and redo this procedure each Time I want any updates?)

These videos are AMAZING. I just purchased my M1 Mac mini - which I love, but the memory is already being eaten up! I am going to get the hub and the external drive and follow your instructions step by step. I had been wondering about installing apps on an external drive, but have been unable to find the answer until now. 2 questions: How can I use FCPX on my main drive, but keep the clips on the external. I already export the finished vids to the cloud, but I'm not sure where all the imported footage 'lives'. Can I use Garage Band on the internal drive, but keep the instruments on the external? they eat up memory like crazy. Thank you again for your video.
Thanks, Glad you Love them. I use Final Cut Pro as well, simply transfer your clips to the external drive, start a new project in final cut and import those clips from the external drive. Whichever app you're using you can always save/import your files directly from the external drive. 👍💪
Explained it really well but I have one doubt. Is it okay to remove the External SSD at times and only when you need to use that certain app that's stored externally you can just plug it in and run? I'm planning on grabbing the 256gb M1 MBA and I know the storage won't be enough. The method you just said will work but will sacrifice a bit on portability, that's why I'm curious to know if it's possible to disconnect the SSD when you don't need that moved app and whenever you need it, just plug it in... This will work right?
Thanks! Yes, you can disconnect and reconnect the SSD whenever you plan to use the App. Just do the proper steps and eject the drive first before unplugging it. 👍💪
Do you think it makes sense to install OS from scratch to external drive if your 8/256 Mac (Mini) is heavily swapping? Our in this case OS performance would be compromised even if it’s installed on fast nvm drive connected over thunderbolt interface?
I think it’s best to leave the OS on the internal drive. I’d try running the apps from the external drive and see how things perform over a week or so.
Hey man ran across this video. I’m about to purchase a t7 shield for myself and mom. I recently bought my mom her first iMac and she’s transitioning from pc to Mac. (I’m also new to the iOS world. Limited knowledge) should I keep the t7 on eXfat till all files are off of the pc and into the Mac and then switching to APFS or will switching from eXfat to APFS delete or mess up the files on the ssd?
You should be able to keep it as exFAT and move everything from your PC to the MAC. Once you confirm that everything is transferred you can make the drive APFS.
Great Video. i was thinking of ways to clone my new MI Mac mini but found out it is not possible. I only wanted to clone it in order to load the many programs I had from my previous Mac Mini. But my new Mac Mini MI has only 256GB of memory. Installing apps on an external drive allows me to load my programs and not take up space on the Mac Main drive. Thank you Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much! Subscribed to you channel. All the best to you!
I got the MacBook Pro M1 because I already had 2 minis and I wanted a built-in monitor and camera. Aside form the measly 2 ports Apple deigned give us, I am very happy with it. I have a question about your LG monitor, does the LG Onscreen Control work on your mini, I have the LG27UL850W with the MacBook Pro M1, it does not work, it says it can't see the monitor...thanks in advance
Yeah, that makes sense. I never had a Mac Mini before so that’s why I got it, and I gotta say I love it. No, the Onscreen control doesn’t work for me, I’ll do some further test and see if I can get it to work. Check out my Mac Apps video, I got a cool app in there called Magnet and it has great split screen functionality.
I may have overlooked it. Do you have a video that shows how I get the apps I moved to the external SSD to show in launchpad? Once I move them they disappear from there. Or do I have to make a separate launchpad for the external SSD?
@@LamarMK Thanks. I'm still having issues with my photos attached to or sent in messenger showing for about 12 hours but then they disappear overnight. I think it's an issue with my mini, they show on my iPad. Have a great week.

Was close to buying the Samsung T7 today. But many reviews said Big Sur won't recognise it. I wonder if they were following similar installation procedure as yours. Can you recommend some external SSDs 256 - 1TB in the £80-120 range that will work without jumping through hoops. I need one specifically for Logic Pro sample libraries. Thanks.
Thank you, very useful info, i noticed some apps like Itunes and Photos when you drag them across the show as a shortcut so I guess I cant delete from the Mac Mini? Also my Imac packed up on me, luckily I have a time machine backup but when I try to go through the process to transfer to the mini it will only point the the 256GB hard drive on the mini. My Imac had 1.6 TB of data etc so obviously it wont fit, any ideas please?
I’m curious. Can I setup a fusion drive like OG macs had. So the system utilizes the internal for which it deems best. And then uses the slower disk for the rest. Is this still a possibility or am I living in the past?
Hi there!! I was wondering if this is possible last night and later i found out your vid. Thanks for clarifying it and i loved the vid. I'm having a doubt if it would work even after emptying up the trash. Plz reply

Hi What is the best? To boot from an external ssd like sabrent rocket 2to Or to install app on an external ssd through a hub like quizlab? You made several videos, now I have no idea which choice to do😭

M1 Pro max 16. Haven’t tried others. Hey how is the reading speed doing it this way. I’d love to move all my apps to an external but I’m afraid apps like unreal will be slow
As long as you get a fast enough external ssd you should be fine. If you want faster speeds you can look into some of the Thunderbolt Drives, I have some videos on those as well. 👍💪
looks slow but I ran out of space and deleted everything except apps. I have only 128 gig on board Hard drive. would it be faster if I use a faster external hard drive?
What will happen if you disconnected the ssd and use it to something else like plugging into other pc to store other files? Also will it make the app run slower vs internal storage?
can i ask you this? If when using software on such external ssd, which ssd will read that app. My macbook m1 ssd or the external ssd ?? because my macbook is getting pretty heavy ssd swap.
The sata drive was in the Hub? If this was the drive you used to launch software, buy a faster drive like a thunderbolt ssd. My research shows the sata drives in the hubs are slow compared to a thunderbolt. Your demo would have been really interesting with the thunderbolt ssd. I have been researching everything about M1 Mac mini and the external drives. I will order a new mini next month with a 1T external thunderbolt ssd and 16G memory. This drive will be partitioned and used for backups and to store iTunes and Photo files so I will have more room on the 256G internal ssd. I will use the other partition for Linux. Apples prices for drive upgrades is ridiculous. I have given Apple enough of my money over the years....
You're right. With the new M1 Macs every external storage by USB speeds is basically cut in half. For my workflow the speeds I get are ok. In the future, I can always upgrade to a more expensive/faster thunderbolt setup.
Great video! What happens if someone (unauthorised) unplug this SSD and plug into their own system (example, another mac, or Windows). Will they be able to read off the files inside the external SSD? Also, can iCloud still backup files on external SSD? or will only upload/backup those on internal ssd
Thank you. Glad you appreciate the video. I think they will be able to read files on it just like any other SSD or external storage devices, unless you have encryption on the drive/files. iCloud backups are in the cloud, not on your internal or external drives. 👍💪
@@btteo You’re welcome, you would have to lookup the specific drive you have. Some of them have softwares you can install on them that could provide such features, and some also offer password protection to access the drives. 👍💪
Is there a way for the applications to show up if they are on an external drive when you click on launchpad? Ideally, I'd like to be able to access the applications from there whilst being on an external drive if possible! :)
I’ve not tried those Apps, but all the Apps I tried from the App Store or Apps downloaded from the Web, all works fine. So I think those Apps will work also. 👍💪

I had been wondering about installing apps on an external drive, but have been unable to find the answer until now. 2 questions:
How can I use FCPX on my main drive, but keep the clips on the external.
Thank you, well done. I just received the same external SSD for the same computer, now I know what to do with it. What are the chances? lol
You're welcome, thank you! Hahaha, that's funny! 😀
Just bought a MacBook Air M1, main use will be for photography, Sandisk 1TB external SSD arriving later today.
Nice, congrats. What are the specs of your M1 Air? That’s a great choice, I’m a big fan of cheaper external storage. 👍💪

Hey man I wanted to ask, rather than making the alias and putting app on dock or desktop, are we able to keep in the launchPad?
Maybe if you create a shortcut in the application folder on the internal drive to the app on the external drive it would show up in the launchpad.
Does the external ssd keep your log in information and all the personalized settings?
It should save the settings of the Apps that are transferred to it.

Does this method works for games as well? Great video!
Yes, it should. Thanks, glad you appreciate it, stay tuned for more. 👍💪
Hey Lamar, I have a 2019 Macbook Air Retina. Would this method work for me as well?
Hey Carlos! Yes, it should work for you as well. 👍💪
Hello.. how about the cache.. is save on internal or external.. thx
Hey there! Not sure, would have to do more research on that.
I may have overlooked it. Do you have a video that shows how I get the apps I moved to the external SSD to show in launchpad? Once I move them they disappear from there. Or do I have to make a separate launchpad for the external SSD?
I haven’t experimented with adding them to the launchpad.
@@LamarMK Thanks. I'm still having issues with my photos attached to or sent in messenger showing for about 12 hours but then they disappear overnight. I think it's an issue with my mini, they show on my iPad. Have a great week.

if a send my capcut to the new external SSD will it transfer my projects too ?
thank you for this. Is there not a way though, to change the location where 'Apps' are saved to in the first instance please?
Or does one have to go through this principle with every App? Thank you in advance - Aindre
You're welcome! I believe it's possible, I'd have to do more research on it. For now, you'll have to do it with this method.

Thanks.
You can go with the Samsung SSD in this video, I used it to edit my 4K videos with no issues, great performance. 👍💪
Great Video. How to install garage band , Logic Pro X, Final cut pro on external hard drive , external SSD ? Thank you
Thank you. Do it the same as I show in the video, install to internal SSD and then move to the external SSD. 👍💪
I’m curious. Can I setup a fusion drive like OG macs had. So the system utilizes the internal for which it deems best. And then uses the slower disk for the rest. Is this still a possibility or am I living in the past?
Hmmm, I’m not sure. It would take some experimenting.
@@LamarMK I bought a stackable thunderbolt external I/O with expansion slots for ssd. I’ll try a few things out and get back on results. Thanks

what about the app store update? do the apps is still able to be updated through the app store?
I've never tried with an app that needed to be updated.
Hi
What is the best? To boot from an external ssd like sabrent rocket 2to
Or to install app on an external ssd through a hub like quizlab?
You made several videos, now I have no idea which choice to do😭
By the way, thank you so much for the videos
Boot OS from your internal SSD. If you don't have a ton of internal storage then run Apps from your external drives. Glad you like the videos. 👍💪
@@LamarMK thank you for the answer, you presented several ssd, which one it could be the best? I thought to buy the sabrent ssd
It's expensive so I want to be sure
M1 Pro max 16. Haven’t tried others. Hey how is the reading speed doing it this way. I’d love to move all my apps to an external but I’m afraid apps like unreal will be slow
As long as you get a fast enough external ssd you should be fine. If you want faster speeds you can look into some of the Thunderbolt Drives, I have some videos on those as well. 👍💪
can i use this approach for my sdxc card plugged in sd slot of macbook pro 2015?
I think so, just not sure how fast it would be.
looks slow but I ran out of space and deleted everything except apps. I have only 128 gig on board Hard drive. would it be faster if I use a faster external hard drive?
What will happen if you disconnected the ssd and use it to something else like plugging into other pc to store other files?
Also will it make the app run slower vs internal storage?
Hey Man I have a Question. If i install a software in my External SSD/HDD and unplug it and then plug it into another PC. Will the software work ?
I have haven’t tried this…but it could work.
Thank you very much I learned a lot from you
You’re welcome! Glad you were able to learn a lot from my videos. Stay tuned for more. 💯👍💪
Hi, would it affect performance if I ran gaming or photo editing apps from an external nvme m.2 ssd instead of the internal ssd?
can i ask you this? If when using software on such external ssd, which ssd will read that app. My macbook m1 ssd or the external ssd ?? because my macbook is getting pretty heavy ssd swap.
Read/write will take place on the external SSD. 👍💪
@@LamarMK Thanks for your reply. Any tips on where to read up about how to have encryption on the drive?
@@btteo You’re welcome, you would have to lookup the specific drive you have. Some of them have softwares you can install on them that could provide such features, and some also offer password protection to access the drives. 👍💪
Does this work for Photoshop also ?Cause i have scratch disk problem on my MacBook🙏
Yes, should work just the same. 👍
Is there a way for the applications to show up if they are on an external drive when you click on launchpad? Ideally, I'd like to be able to access the applications from there whilst being on an external drive if possible! :)
I think it’s possible. Not sure if someone said how to in the comments. 👍💪
does this work f.ex with Xcode or Logic Pro as well? Thanks for any answers!
I’ve not tried those Apps, but all the Apps I tried from the App Store or Apps downloaded from the Web, all works fine. So I think those Apps will work also. 👍💪
How fast is this drive? Comparable to the internal SSD on the Mac Mini?
The internal drive is faster. The external drive is fast enough for me to edit TH-cam videos from, so it’s not slow.
can i use this method on mac book pro too??
Yes, any Mac. 👍💪
Is this specific to M1 or could i do this with an old MacBook pro from 2015? It would solve all my problems
It should work just the same for regular Intel Macs.
