I put myself semi in this category. I believed, I just didn’t think it would happen in my time.

Climate Change is humanities greatest threat. Capitalism is predicated upon permanent growth on a finite natural resource. Capitalism is the problem, pro capital James O'Brien is part of the problem despite recognising our climate erosion. Capital will not be made to mitigate it's catastrophic destruction of our planets environment, O'Brien's empty platitudes are a dangerous distraction. Simple appeals to capital or government, changes little or nothing and leads to inevitable, disastrous time wasting. Direct action always gets the goods.

This is a great example of the discontinuous thought process of your average human being. The correct thought he should be having is "how has the climate crisis become so bad that large groups of people are now blocking busy intersections in London that could delay ambulances? Why have our supposed leaders allowed the climate to get into such a state that people are protesting on the streets?"
By all means caller, write to your local MP, but ask them the right questions rather than demanding something should be done about protestors.

Just last evening I was discussing how to get the British public to actually take notice of the message that XR are trying to get across.
My idea is to get Katherine Tate to use her "Lauren" (Am I bovvered?) character!
A scene opens with Lauren being Lauren in a London underpass. A flash flood event happens. Not unheard of in these recent times. Lauren almost drowns and in her, what she believes are her last moments, she has a Road to Damascus revelation to become a Climate Champion with the knowledge and passion of George Monbiot!
Fast forward to Lauren at the COP 26 saying "I am bovvered!"

I’m glad you are starting to get it, but I have to ask what took you so long? And your ignorance of who the people are within XR is striking. You call them crusties. You try camping out for months at a time in very basic conditions trying to stop HS2 cutting down forests in our country which is one of the most nature depleted in the world, or road expansion or whatever, or camping out on the streets for a fortnight then let’s see how fashionable you look or how bad you smell.
It is all sorts of people - engineers, civil servants, midwives, scientists, lecturers, farmers, architects, housewives, grandparents, ex policemen, young people, old people - you name it. Not so many black or Asian people because they get treated worse on average by police so it is harder for them to be involved.
The common factor is they understand the danger we are in and are prepared to kick up a fuss rather than just go down the pub and moan.
Will we win - who knows? But I would rather go down fighting than being led to the slaughter thinking it is all being taken care of and everything will be fine when clearly we are in deep trouble.

At 74 and a lifelong environmentalist, I can't comprehend the idea of talking about having kids, let alone grandkids. If anyone wants kids, there are plenty desperately needing adoption. I loved working with elementary kids for 25 years but would abolish the military worldwide and pay at least $25G to ANYONE getting their tubes tied. How can any thinking person look around and not see the horror of bringing a human into the world today?

@@lloydjones7925 That rather depends on which specific law is being broken doesn't it. Do you think ALL laws must always be respected? You seem to be working on the assumption that all laws are put in place for our benefit, which isn't the case at all. So when the law changes to "Protesting is against the law and anyone doing so will be arrested", you will be in favour of all protests being banned? Hmmm ok. In fact, our shithole government has already passed new laws this year that adds additional restrictions to protests. Apparently any peaceful protest can now be stopped if it's too noisy or causes any disruption to the public. So basically, only protests that can be easily ignored will be allowed.
Up until 1975, it used to be illegal to be a gay man. Then the law was changed, and it wasn't. If the law reverted back to criminalising people for being gay, would you respect that law or would you oppose it? Just curious.

James, some people who say we no longer live in a democracy really believe that we have lost many rights and freedoms under the law. Liberalism and related beliefs will think very poorly of the emergency powers rushed through by the government and people being controlled in various ways or told what to do.
The problem is very much bigger than the mask or whatever the problem or method of control may be. Some see these freedoms as lost, until the government returns those rights them to us officially.
Some believe that freedom of speech has a place within this to and as such feel that cancel culture removes some people right to an opinion. Whereas those who push against cancel culture will frequently support everyone's right to an opinion, especially those who have a different view to their own. However free speech does not entitle one side to cancel the views or livelihoods of another, as can be the case with cancel culture recently.

But seriously - I cannot take the climate movement seriously.. What exactly are you trying to prevent? I can 100% get down with environmental protection and stopping the pollution of our waters and lands. But what exactly are the climate change extremists trying to prevent?
    Rising sea levels?
    Global temperatures?
    Co2 level increases?
    I just can't understand it..
The earth has been hotter before.
Sea levels have been far higher before.
Co2 levels have been far higher before.
And that was all without human involvement / intervention.
I'll take warmer temperatures and delaying the next ice age for as long as possible over freezing to death / starving to death any day..
Stop rubbish, sewerage and chemical pollution. That's something I can get on board with, as that has
Actual measurable consequences. EG. Bees aren't dying from climate change, they're dying from pesticide use and chemical residues.
