hello. I happened to search Kuching on TH-cam and came across your video. My family also recently immigrated from South Korea to Kuching. It's so good that I wonder if there's another city in Southeast Asia with clean, safe, and peaceful streets like this. In particular, perhaps because the city was formed around the airport, all the buildings are low and the view of the sky is great. As someone who now lives in Kuching, I would like to thank you for capturing the beauty of Kuching in video. Please keep making good videos in the future!

You can Google about our foods and places of interest. You should go to the museum, it's modern and trust me you will enjoy. Because once you enter, you will feel like 'I wanna know more, I wanna watch more, I wanna go to the next level to see more'
OMG, as I was about to go to kitchen I hear him mention that, one thing he noticed is garbage bins everywhere. I gushed and ran back! I didn't see those much in Asia. I am impressed by this place so far. Looks clean, and lots of nature. Wonder about prices, affordability and safety. I am curious now.

thank you for visiting my hometown eventhough I live in peninsulae right now..my house is just 5 minutes near the Padang Merdeka and the big museum area
I remember that river promenade, that Chinese temple, that pink mosque, and the grassy park areas. Pretty sure I went into most of the museums and those kind of civic centers. I even stayed on one of those streets you like, mostly always on the second level. Cant remember if that Garden hotel was one of them, but I do seem to remember one on a corner. oh, yeah, the food courts and markets, and bus 'depo' area.
Always be humble when we travel. Never berated the locals by saying it is "cheap" even though the locals unintentionally says the word "cheap" about anything at that moment of time. The reason why Sarawak feels so differen compared to the rest of Malaysia because it was a different country before the formation of Malaysia. Malaya, Sarawak and North Borneo(Sabah) combine to form Malaysia on 16th September 1963 so the vibe and environment would be very different, even after 60 years. Kuching is also known as the Cat City because the word "kuching" or "kucing" means "cat" in the Malay language.
thanks for visiting our city. well to be honest I don't know why our city called cat city bcs all city has cats. But I think it's called cat city is only because 'kuching' itself means cat in malay. 😂
1. You asked the wrong person. That security guide always gave wrong answer to tourists! He is blur. 2. Your speaking slang is American, not British. That old man knows nothing about slang. 3. Why "Kuching"? WHAT’S IN THE NAME? We should all know that there is such a city called Kuching in Sarawak, especially if you’re a Malaysian. It’s been known as the “Cat City” due to the resemblance of the name “kucing” to the Malay word for cat. However, that still doesn’t explain how Kuching got its name. The question has baffled many for many years. Here, we would like to share with you some of the different versions of the origin of Kuching name. VERSION 1: MOST DIRECT VERSION OF ITS ORIGIN - KUCHING MEANS CAT IN MALAY This came from an oral tradition revealed that when James Brooke went up the Sarawak River with a local Malay guide in 1841. He stumbled upon an animal jumping along the bank of the river. He was curious and asked the guide about the animal. The guide replied in the Malay language, “Itu Kuching! (That’s a cat!).” Then, James Brooke somehow just decided to name the place, Kuching. VERSION 2: KUCHING MEANS PORT IN INDOCHINA The year was 1839, where James Brooke referred to the Kuching City as “Kuchin”. It bore resemblance to the old word “Cochin” which stands for port, being commonly used in India or Indochina, and thus, a relation between the two. Given the fact that Brooke was a sea-going man, he was just using an old Indian or Indo-China word for “Port”. VERSION 3: KUCHING NAMED AFTER AN OLD WELL This version of the origin series has its roots in the oriental culture. There was a Chinese story that said Kuching was actually named after some old wells found in the vicinity of Sungai Kuching as Kuching means “Old Well” in Chinese Mandarin. Long time ago, these old wells were the provider of fresh water to the local population. Most of these wells have since been filled up for development. VERSION 4: KUCHING NAMED AFTER DISAPPEARING STREAM NAME In Sarawak, naming a town after a river is a common practice. The name Kuching might have derived from Sungai (River) Kuching which was a small stream flowed from the direction of Kuching Reservoir, east of Wayang Street and emerged between the now Tua Pek Kong Temple and the old Chinese Chamber of Commerce along Thompson Road (now know as Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman) to join Sungai Sarawak. However, the river had since disappeared from the map of Kuching due to construction of Temple street and the rapid town expansion which led to it being filled up sometime in 1928. VERSION 5: KUCHING NAME IS FROM A LOCAL FRUIT The name “Kuching” could have come from the local fruit known as “Mata Kucing“. The fruit was found to be growing abundantly atop the hill know as Bukit Mata Kucing behind the Chinese Tua Pek Kong Temple. Locally, the fruit is known as Isau or Green Longan while its botanical name is Dimocarpus Longan, spp.malesianus, var malesianus and it belongs to the family of sap indaccae. It is a true tropical Longan that is only found in Sarawak. It belongs to the group of fruit with the vernacular name of Mata Kucing which also includes Sau, Kakus and Guring fruits. Mata Kucing trees were grown wildly around Sungai Kuching in the olden days. The fruit is spherical in shape, dark green in colour with numerous protuberances on its skin surface. Mata Kucing‘s color changes from dark green to light yellowish green as it ripens. The flesh is translucent, crispy and sweet. KUCHING NAME HAS BEEN USED LONG BEFORE JAMES BROOKE Looking back in history, the name “Kuching” actually predated the rule of James Brooke. It has been called so during the Brunei rule. This could be proven in James Brooke’s private letter to his mother on 14.9.1841 where he used the word “Kuchin” with a note stating that “Kuchin” was the native name of Sarawak. The name “Kuchin” was however dropped and only Sarawak was used in another letter to his mother dated 26.3.1842. On 12.8.1872, in the Supreme Council meeting, the second White Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Brooke reverted to the name of “Sarawak” in place of “Kuching” even though at that time, Sarawak was the name of the capital and the river which flows through it as well as the territory of Sarawak. This was because he wanted to define the township of Sarawak by a more positive appellation. From then onward, Kuching became the name of the town and the name Sarawak was used to represent the whole territory, according to Sarawak Gazette No.47 dated 16.8.1972)
Exceptionally wonderful explanation. I appreciate and am thankful to you for giving so much time for providing such a comprehensive information. I wish and hope to meet you someday. I am currently in JB. May visit Kuching Sarawak some day.
It amazes me alot....here is someone all the way from the other side of the Globe -USA - visiting Sarawak! I met a few West Malaysians ( the peninsula Malaysia) who had never step out of MALAYA - to see the Borneo states of Malaysia ! !
If you skip the Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM)... you're probably not that interested in Sarawak's history. Not every visitor is into the historical background of a city they visit. Lots of museums within that area. Across the road from the BCM is the Ethnology museum and behind it is a park where you would find some Chinese graves, a war memorial, an open amphitheatre and remnants of bomb shelters from the 2nd. World War. At the Waterfront, there's a small Chinese museum, next to the Plaza mall is the Textile museum, Ranee Museum at the Old Court House, Fort Margherita is near the State Assembly building across the river... Or the quirky Cat Museum... Other than that, attractions are within around two hours' drive radius - Jong Crocodile Farm, Semenggoh Orang Utan Sanctuary, Bako National Park and a few other national parks.

KUCHING NAME HAS BEEN USED LONG BEFORE JAMES BROOKE
Looking back in history, the name “Kuching” actually predated the rule of James Brooke.
Terima kasih dengan penerangannya...sy pun dapat ilmu ...sy hanya tahu nama KUCHING Dari version 1....
Wow. Thanks for the explanation. When is the mata Kuching fruit in season?
"Mata Kucing' or Dimorcapus longan spp. malesianus Leenh.var malesianus usually bear fruit in June.
@@rahmanl2497 But when is it ripe though?
What I like about Myers' video is his interactions with the locals. It's always nice to see, wholesome at times. Keep it up! - fan from Brunei
Thank you very much!
Sarawak museum is a must. AUthentic artifacts.
I'm from Kuching but I haven't been there in over 10 years.
watching this video makes me feel like I'm back there! Thanks for sharing it. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Kuching is my home town😃✨
Hi Myer, hail from Singapore. Enjoyed watching your videos, clear sound, speech and good angle picture. Have wanted to travel to sabah sarawak kuching for quite sometimes but didnt have the chance yet. Sarawak is beautiful clean and i can say is quiet, as mentioned by the elderly man, its good for retirement far away frm hustle and bustle of the town. The shophouses looks like those in jb and singapore. At least now i have some ideas abt east malaysia. Have a safe and pleasant trip ya. Take care
Go for it!

Thank you man for visiting our city! Your feedback on our garbage bins are available almost everywhere in the city is something I've always cherished about for staying in this city. I've been to quite a lot of other cities in europe and asia and still found this is what Kuching is prominent of. Hope to see more of your videos about Sarawak.
