Laser Weeding Robot Kills 100,000 Weeds Per Hour

- A Company by the name of Carbon Robotics made an Autonomous Laser Weeding Robot, that kills 100,000 weeds per hour, using nothing but lasers.
The Robot, uses GPS and Lidar sensors, to autonomously drive within the bounds of a field, navigate furrows, and automatically turn around to start on the next row.
Because the Robot uses thermal energy to eradicate weeds, rather than a physical intervention like tilling, the machine doesn't disturb the soil below. That means reduced farm costs, no more herbicides, and most importantly, happier, healthier crops.
While the Robot moves around its plot at about 5 miles per hour, its 12 high-resolution cameras continuously scan the ground below. Meanwhile, an onboard supercomputer uses machine learning to identify unwanted plants in mere milliseconds.
Once the robot pinpoints undesirable weeds, it fires its eight carbon dioxide lasers at them.
The Robots laser array can kill a combined 100,000 weeds per hour, or about 28 weeds per second. And a single robot can weed 15 to 20 acres in a day.

So much better than using glyphosate! Yay. I know 3 people that have glyphosate allergies, including myself. The hospital is getting to know me as this herbicide is so ubiquitous.
Absolutely amazing. Hate that I'm getting so old! I'd just love to see where we will be in 100 years. So many are so pessimistic about our future. I however am not. Humans are problem solvers, have been for many MANY thousands of years now. (I'm learning that civilization may be much much older than were were taught in school, and that human kind may have already survived MANY extinction level events. We survived what ever it was that killed off all of the mega-fauna 12,800 years ago. THAT was a biggie!

Yeah… we survived whatever killled off the megafauna because we killed off the megafauna. It’s a widely accepted theory that the disappearance of megafauna in North America coincides with human arrival on the continent.
So, could a tech like this be used to kill insect pests without pesticides?
I would think so, it may need to be smart enough to adjust power if targeting insects on the plant itself
Oh I get it, this zaps them when they're just seedlings, with a beam spread of an inch or so at ground level. Once they've grown bigger it's too late and they become impractical to zap. Must be some super high res cameras and heavy cpu power running AI. But timing makes things easier since once the crop is well past seedling size, all the tiny stuff is surely weeds.

I just saw a robot that squirts herbicide to reduce the use of poison and that made me think of where I have seen a laser robot. Because surely a laser is better than poison. And then you post this video of the laser weed killer. But wasn't it tested as a bug killer as well?

This is potentially very, very good. Cost comparison? Plans to hit an economy of scale? Make it happen! Fewer pesticides, win win, win.

I wonder if this technology can be turned against aphids and other insect pests? If so, there'd also be a massive market for killing bedbugs (an easy kill), as well as flies, mosquitos, et al.; you wouldn't even have to worry about the power source, no batteries or diesel, just plug the bug zapper into the wall.
why not use a lazer from space?

The wheel tracks must take up 15-20% of the land. Smaller robots travelling above the ground on wires would be better.

You clearly know nothing about farming, strengths of materials, costs, etc.
If these are high value crops then land use is not much of an issue. If not then I'm sure we'll see a solution with booms soon. They might have to drive slower but would cover the same area in the same time

It's true my D has slowly started to point south instead of north. The magnetic field is causing more GForce on my D to change.

This can only work when the crops are young and small. When the crops get bigger and get more leafy, laser can not reach the weeds under the crops.
But, happily, weeds rarely grow when the crops are big. The bigger crops shade out the weeds and very few will grow.
The laser weeding is the best thing to come out for agriculture in decades.
